If the problem remains, use the diagnostic steps for your device. Back up your data before considering a reset, and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider if the screen is damaged or touch still fails.
Start with the screen and anything touching it
Before changing settings, rule out surface problems and accessories. A case, screen protector, sticker, moisture, dirt, or gloves can interfere with touch or make it seem inaccurate. Look for cracks, chips, or other visible damage.

- Remove gloves, the case, screen protector, stickers, and attached accessories. Pay attention to stickers covering sensors or screen edges.
- Turn off the device before cleaning. Use a soft cloth that is slightly dampened with water or cleaning solution; do not spray liquid directly onto the display or make it too wet.
- Let the screen dry completely, then test it with clean, dry fingers.
ASUS provides these cleaning precautions in its touchscreen troubleshooting guidance. A soft cleaning cloth can remove dirt; it cannot repair a damaged display or touch sensor.

Restart the device, then test touch on the home screen and in more than one app. If touch works only in one app, the issue may be limited to that app rather than the whole display. Restart procedures differ by model. Google says that on most Android phones, holding the power button for about 30 seconds restarts the device; use your manufacturer’s instructions if that does not apply.

On iPhone or iPad, disconnect Lightning or USB-C accessories and test again. If touch improves when an accessory is disconnected, try another cable, charger, or socket. Apple also recommends removing the case and screen protector when touch is intermittent or overly sensitive. See Apple’s screen troubleshooting steps.
Choose the troubleshooting path for your device
iPhone or iPad
After removing accessories, the case, and screen protector, clean and dry the display and restart the device. If the screen still does not respond, Apple says the device may need service. Use Apple Support’s guidance to pursue the appropriate support option.

Android phone
If basic checks and a restart do not help, safe mode can help determine whether a downloaded app is involved. The exact steps for entering safe mode vary by phone, so follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Touch works in safe mode: Google says an app is most likely causing the problem. Uninstall recently downloaded apps one at a time, restarting and testing after each removal.
- Touch still fails: The issue is less likely to be caused by a downloaded app. Continue with the manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance.
For a possible dead zone, use Google’s test: drag a finger slowly from the upper-left corner toward the lower-right without lifting it. If the gesture repeatedly releases at the same screen location, contact the phone manufacturer. If Developer options are enabled, turn them off and test again. Windows 10 or Windows 11 touch PC
First confirm that the exact PC model has a touchscreen. ASUS recommends searching Windows for “View pen and touch info.” If Windows reports that no pen or touch input is available for the display, that display does not support touch; it is not a touchscreen fault.
If the PC does support touch, restart and install available Windows updates. Then check whether the touch device is enabled:

- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices.
- Find HID-compliant touch screen. If it is disabled, use the device’s context menu to enable it.
If the device is missing, disabled, or touch still does not work, use the PC maker’s instructions for scanning for hardware changes, reinstalling the touchscreen driver, and checking BIOS, Windows, and driver updates. ASUS also documents touch setup and restoring calibration defaults on supported devices; calibration is not applicable to every PC. Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. That affects Windows 10 support and updates, but does not by itself explain a touchscreen fault.

Microsoft Surface
Surface devices have an additional diagnostic: test touch in UEFI. If touch does not work there, Microsoft says hardware failure is likely and service is the next step. If touch works in UEFI, investigate Windows or the touch driver instead. Microsoft’s Surface guidance also covers driver reinstallation and Windows and Surface updates.
Follow Microsoft’s instructions for your specific Surface model. Do not uninstall the touchscreen driver on Surface Pro X using the general driver-removal step: Microsoft warns that restoring those drivers requires a full system reset. - No response anywhere: Check touch support, visible damage, screen obstructions, and accessories first. If the device supports touch and a restart does not help, continue with the relevant platform checks.
- Intermittent or overly sensitive response: Remove the case and screen protector, clean and dry the display, and disconnect accessories where applicable.
- A repeated dead zone: On Android, use Google’s diagonal-drag test. A release at the same location on repeated attempts is a reason to contact the manufacturer.
- Touch works in Android safe mode: A downloaded app is the likely cause; remove recent apps one at a time.
- Touch fails in Surface UEFI: Hardware failure is likely; seek service rather than repeatedly changing Windows settings.
Back up before a reset, and know when to seek service
A factory reset is an advanced step, not a first response. Google warns that resetting an Android phone removes its data and recommends backing it up first. ASUS likewise advises backing up personal files before resetting a PC. Check the instructions for your exact device and confirm the backup is complete before proceeding.
