The distinction is useful for understanding habitat and care, but the words are not used identically everywhere: “tortoise” generally refers to a land-living chelonian, while “turtle” can refer either to aquatic species or to all members of the group. Diet and enclosure needs depend on the species and life stage, not just the label.
What is the difference between a tortoise and a turtle?
Both are chelonians, the reptile group that includes animals with shells. In common biological and pet-care usage, tortoises are terrestrial. “Turtle” is more ambiguous: it can mean an aquatic or semi-aquatic chelonian, or serve as a broad term for the group as a whole.

That means the most useful comparison is between land-living tortoises and aquatic or semi-aquatic turtles—not a claim that every species called a turtle has the same lifestyle.
Where do tortoises and turtles live?
Tortoises are terrestrial
Tortoises live on land, so their enclosure must be designed around terrestrial conditions rather than a swimming tank. Temperature, humidity, lighting, and space needs vary by species. Merck Veterinary Manual’s selected-reptile husbandry table, for example, lists Greek tortoises as terrestrial and temperate to subtropical; its figures are examples for that species, not rules for every tortoise. Merck’s husbandry table lists a preferred optimal temperature zone of 20–28°C (68–82°F) and humidity of 30–50% for Greek tortoises.

Many turtles need both water and dry basking space
Aquatic turtles need suitable swimming water as well as a dry area where they can bask. VCA’s aquatic-turtle guidance also includes heat and UV light as housing components. Its advice is for aquatic turtle care; it should not be applied to a land tortoise. VCA’s aquatic-turtle housing guide describes these setup needs.
Species-specific examples illustrate why a single “turtle tank” prescription is not enough. Merck’s table lists red-eared sliders as temperate to subtropical, with a minimum water depth of 30 cm (12 inches) and land area equal to one-third of the tank. These are Merck’s figures for red-eared sliders, not universal requirements for aquatic turtles.

How does their diet differ?
Tortoises need plant material
Tortoises are herbivorous. Plant material supports healthy gut physiology, and Merck discusses both formulated diets and plants as possible parts of feeding. The appropriate diet depends on the animal’s species and context, so a food or supplement that suits one tortoise should not be assumed to suit all of them. Merck’s reptile nutrition guidance covers these considerations.
Many freshwater turtles eat animal matter and plants
Many freshwater turtles eat mostly animal matter in the wild, while also consuming some plant material. Feeding can change with age: some species are carnivorous when young and become more omnivorous or herbivorous as adults. Red-eared sliders are one example; VCA describes juveniles as mainly carnivorous and adults as more omnivorous. VCA’s turtle-feeding guide discusses this life-stage difference.

What care does each animal need?
The word “turtle” or “tortoise” alone cannot determine a suitable care plan. Confirm the species and build its setup around its habitat, food, temperature, humidity, lighting, and enclosure needs.
- Habitat: Is the species terrestrial, aquatic, or semi-aquatic?
- Water and basking: If it is aquatic, does it have suitable swimming water and a dry basking area?
- Diet: What foods fit the species, and does the animal’s life stage affect its diet?
- Climate: What temperature and humidity conditions suit the species?
- Lighting: Does the setup provide the required broad-spectrum UVB and other appropriate heat or lighting?
- Maintenance and space: What enclosure size and upkeep are needed? For aquatic turtles, VCA says owners need filtration or must be prepared to change the water weekly. VCA’s housing guide covers aquatic setup and water care.
Merck marks broad-spectrum UVB as essential for its listed tortoise and aquatic turtle examples. That makes lighting a real equipment consideration, but the fixture and its placement should be matched to the species and enclosure rather than chosen from the animal’s general label. Merck’s husbandry table gives requirements for selected reptile species.
