The TOPPING E50 II is a desktop DAC and preamp for connecting digital sources to an amplifier or active speakers. It offers USB, Bluetooth, coaxial, and optical inputs, plus RCA and balanced TRS line outputs. It does not have a documented headphone output, so headphone users need a separate headphone amplifier.
What the E50 II does in a system
Connect a digital source to the E50 II, then run its analog RCA or balanced TRS outputs to an amplifier or active speakers. TOPPING’s product page and the user manual describe line outputs, not a headphone jack. If you listen through headphones, the signal chain needs a separate headphone amplifier between the E50 II and your headphones.

Inputs and connections
The E50 II accepts audio over USB, Bluetooth, coaxial S/PDIF, and optical. Its optical input can be used for S/PDIF or ADAT; the manual specifies 44.1–192 kHz for optical and coaxial S/PDIF, with automatic detection.

- USB: USB-C carries audio data and can power the unit when connected to a computer. If USB power is insufficient, the manual says to connect a DC 5 V supply; a phone charger or power bank is listed as a compatible source.
- Bluetooth: TechRadar lists LDAC, aptX, aptX Adaptive, aptX HD, SBC, and AAC support, but not aptX Lossless. Codec use depends on the sending device and its settings; the receiver and source must share a supported codec. See TechRadar’s review.
- Coaxial and optical: These are useful when a source has S/PDIF output. Optical additionally supports ADAT, subject to the setup requirements below.
- Analog outputs: RCA provides single-ended line output; TRS provides balanced line output. Choose the connection supported by the downstream amplifier or speakers.
Using optical ADAT
ADAT is a distinct use for the optical connection, not another name for optical S/PDIF. The E50 II and connected interface must use the same sample rate. The unit also lets you select two channels from the ADAT inputs, so it is suited to a stereo feed selected from a multichannel ADAT stream rather than serving as a multichannel analog converter. The manual documents the matching-rate and channel-selection requirements.

DAC mode, preamp mode, and volume
The operating mode determines where listening level is controlled. In DAC mode, TOPPING says the E50 II outputs at maximum level and its volume is not adjustable from the unit. In preamp mode, its volume can be adjusted. Use DAC mode when the downstream device is intended to control volume; use preamp mode when you want the E50 II to provide that control. Confirm the downstream device’s level behavior before switching modes, especially if an amplifier or powered speaker is already set loud.
PEQ and technical specifications
TOPPING lists a 10-band parametric EQ (PEQ), an AK4497S DAC, and an XMOS XU316 USB stage. Its specifications include PCM up to 768 kHz/32-bit and native DSD512 over USB. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent evidence that high-resolution files or a particular chip produce an audible improvement. For most buyers, the useful questions are whether the inputs, output connections, volume behavior, and EQ fit the system.

Who should consider it
- It may fit if you need a compact DAC/preamp with several digital input options, RCA or balanced TRS output, Bluetooth, or a 10-band PEQ.
- ADAT is a differentiator only for a matching setup: you need an ADAT source or interface, compatible sample-rate settings, and a use for selecting two channels.
- It is not a one-box headphone solution: plan on a separate headphone amplifier if headphones are the intended load.
- Compare by system function, not just maximum sample-rate figures: check whether another DAC includes headphone amplification, the input you need, the output type your amplifier accepts, Bluetooth codec compatibility, PEQ, and preamp volume control.
Price and availability
Prices reported by reviewers are dated snapshots, not current quotes. Headfonics listed $199 in its review published February 7, 2026; it disclosed that TOPPING supplied the review sample. Headfonics’ review also describes the reviewer’s use of the RCA outputs with headphone and speaker amplifiers. Pragmatic Audio reported a typical $199 price and a $169.15 sale price in May 2026, and disclosed that TOPPING supplied its unit. Pragmatic Audio’s review notes the box included USB A-to-C and USB C-to-C cables.
