The TOPPING DX5 II is a versatile desktop hub: it combines a DAC, headphone amplifier and variable-level preamp, with USB, optical, coaxial and Bluetooth inputs. Its headline appeal is the range of connections and high manufacturer-rated output from its balanced headphone jacks. Whether it is a good fit depends on your headphones’ wiring and power needs, the sources you use, and whether you want to feed active speakers as well as headphones.
This review separates TOPPING’s specifications from an independent reviewer’s listening impressions. The performance figures below are manufacturer claims, not independent bench measurements; the listening comments are one reviewer’s subjective account, not results from hands-on testing for this article.

What the DX5 II does
The DX5 II combines three roles in one desktop component: digital-to-analog conversion, headphone amplification and preamplification. Connect a computer, digital source or Bluetooth device, then choose headphone listening or use its variable-level line outputs to control active speakers or a separate power amplifier. TOPPING identifies dual ES9039Q2M DAC chips, Bluetooth 5.1 with LDAC, ten-band parametric EQ and a preamp mode on its product page.
Its connections make it suitable for a multi-source desk setup, but the format a source can deliver depends on the input. Support for a high sample rate or Bluetooth codec is a compatibility specification, not evidence that it will sound better than a lower-rate signal.

Inputs, outputs and format support
The manual lists USB, optical, coaxial and Bluetooth inputs; RCA and XLR line outputs; and 6.35 mm single-ended, 4.4 mm balanced and 4-pin XLR headphone outputs. USB is the broadest digital input by listed format support.
| Connection | Formats or role |
|---|---|
| USB | PCM up to 768 kHz/32-bit; native DSD512, or DSD256 via DoP |
| Optical and coaxial | PCM up to 192 kHz/32-bit |
| Bluetooth | AAC, SBC, aptX, aptX HD, aptX Adaptive and LDAC |
| RCA and XLR line outputs | Feed a downstream amplifier or, in preamp mode, active speakers with variable output level |
| 6.35 mm headphone output | Single-ended headphone connection |
| 4.4 mm and 4-pin XLR headphone outputs | Balanced headphone connections |
These formats and connectors are listed in the DX5 II manual. The manual notes that PEQ support has input-dependent format limits, so a maximum format listed for an input should not automatically be assumed to remain available with EQ engaged.

Can it drive your headphones?
TOPPING’s manual gives substantially higher rated power for the balanced outputs than for the 6.35 mm single-ended output. The figures below are manufacturer specifications per channel, labeled “USB In@96kHz,” measured in TOPPING’s laboratory under AC220V, 50Hz, at THD+N below 1%. They are not independent measurements or a guarantee of a particular listening level.
| Load | 6.35 mm single-ended | 4.4 mm balanced / 4-pin XLR |
|---|---|---|
| 16 Ω | 3,300 mW | 7,600 mW |
| 32 Ω | 2,200 mW | 6,400 mW |
| 64 Ω | 1,160 mW | 4,300 mW |
| 300 Ω | 250 mW | 990 mW |
| 600 Ω | 120 mW | 490 mW |
Impedance alone does not determine how much power a headphone needs. For a practical match, check the headphone’s connector wiring, impedance and sensitivity, then consider how loudly you listen. The manual also specifies output impedance below 0.1 Ω, low-gain noise below 1.1 µVrms single-ended and below 1.6 µVrms balanced, and a 20 Hz–20 kHz frequency response of ±0.3 dB. TOPPING lists SNR and dynamic range at 1 kHz as 131 dB single-ended and 133 dB balanced. These, too, are manufacturer-stated figures rather than third-party results.

Balanced is a connection choice, not a universal upgrade
The higher balanced power ratings can matter if a headphone needs more output, but the headphone must have a cable wired for the matching balanced connector. Do not use a balanced-to-single-ended adapter or cable. TOPPING’s support guidance explicitly warns against adapters such as 4.4 mm to 3.5 mm, 4.4 mm to 6.35 mm or 4-pin XLR to single-ended; see the support material in the official manual.
Using the DX5 II with active speakers
Connect the DX5 II’s RCA or XLR line outputs to active speakers or to a separate power amplifier. In preamp mode, its output volume can be controlled from the unit, making it possible to use the DX5 II as the system’s DAC and volume-control hub. Confirm the selected output mode and start at a low volume when connecting a speaker system; the appropriate input and level depend on the connected equipment.

PEQ and software controls
The DX5 II supports ten-band parametric EQ, with frequency, gain and bandwidth adjustment described on TOPPING’s product page. TOPPING says its HOME web interface can control the feature. TechRadar’s review also reports that Topping Tune supports profiles and target curves, and notes Windows availability at the time of that review, with Mac availability later noted on the page. Software and firmware support can change, so check TOPPING’s current compatibility information for your computer and product revision before relying on a particular control method.

What it sounds like: one reviewer’s view
TechRadar’s review, published November 8, 2025, describes the DX5 II as detailed and dynamic, while noting a hint of brightness in the treble and sensitivity to headphone or system pairing. Those are the reviewer’s listening impressions, not measured properties or a prediction that every listener will hear the same thing. The reviewer’s account is available at TechRadar.
Setup and safe connection practices
- Use the output that matches the headphone cable’s wiring. Never connect a balanced headphone output to a single-ended headphone input using an adapter.
- Fully seat the headphone plug and pause playback before connecting or disconnecting headphones. TOPPING’s support guidance says, “Do not plug/unplug headphones while playing.”
- Use a normal listening volume. TOPPING notes that excessive volume or an abnormal headphone load may trigger thermal protection.
- If you need a 3.5 mm headphone connection, the manual lists a 6.35 mm-to-3.5 mm adapter among included items. Check the contents for your region and product revision before buying one.
The manual is the source for the operating guidance and listed in-box items; package contents can vary by region or revision. The included-items list is also more authoritative than individual reviewer package observations.
Who should consider it—and what remains uncertain
The DX5 II makes most sense if you want one desktop unit to handle several digital sources, wired headphones and a variable-level speaker or amplifier output. Its balanced outputs offer much higher manufacturer-rated power than its single-ended jack, while the range of inputs and EQ options may suit a setup that changes between sources or headphones.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
It is less compelling if you only need a basic single-input DAC, have no use for preamp functionality, or cannot use the connection types and software controls it offers. A purchase decision should also account for current local price, warranty and software compatibility: the sources cited here do not establish current pricing or warranty terms. Forum anecdotes alleging 4.4 mm output failures do not establish a failure rate, and the cited official materials provide no representative reliability statistic; they are not enough to support either a categorical defect claim or a categorical assurance of reliability.
