To use a TWAIN scanner in a Windows 365 Cloud PC session, install and configure its TWAIN driver on the local device, connect using a supported Windows App client, and enable scanner redirection on each Cloud PC. Microsoft documents this scanner-specific setup with a registry policy and a redirector MSI. The feature is labeled preview, and the scanner procedure is separate from the Windows App client redirection policies documented for Intune.
How TWAIN scanner redirection works
Scanner redirection carries scanner behavior from the local device into the remote session through high-level peripheral reflection. Microsoft says this method supports TWAIN and identifies scanner redirection as a preview feature. See Microsoft’s scanner-redirection guidance.

The scanner remains attached to the local device; the Cloud PC accesses it through the remote session. The local scanner must be TWAIN-capable, and its driver must be installed correctly on that device. The reviewed Microsoft guidance specifies Windows App for Windows version 2.0.1070.0. Check Microsoft’s current client and platform comparison before relying on another client or operating system.
Configure each Windows 365 Cloud PC
In Microsoft’s documented configuration, Windows does not block scanner redirection, but redirection from the local device to the Cloud PC is disabled at the Cloud PC level by default. Microsoft’s scanner-specific instructions require enabling the policy value and installing the redirector MSI on each Cloud PC.

- Enable the policy. Open an elevated Command Prompt on the Cloud PC and run:
reg add "HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindows NTTerminal Services" /v fTWAINRedirectionEnabled /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f - Install the redirector. Install
TwainRedirectorMsi-1.0.2603.17170.msion that Cloud PC, following Microsoft’s scanner-redirection guidance. - Repeat for every Cloud PC. The documented setting and MSI installation are per Cloud PC, so apply them to each machine where users need scanner access.
Microsoft’s reviewed instructions do not specify a separate confirmation command or a universal scanner application test. After configuring the Cloud PC, connect with the supported client and check whether the application in the session can detect and use the redirected scanner.
What Intune does—and does not—configure here
Microsoft’s Intune guidance for Windows App redirection settings covers client-side options such as drive, camera, audio-capture, and clipboard redirection. It says that when local-client settings conflict with Cloud PC or host-side settings, the more restrictive setting takes effect. That page does not provide a scanner-specific Intune policy walkthrough for setting fTWAINRedirectionEnabled and deploying the redirector MSI.

- Fastest scan speeds in its class among TWAIN-enabled scanners³ — scans at up to 45 ppm/90 ipm²; single-pass duplex scanning
- Highest ADF capacity in its class among TWAIN-enabled scanners³ — 100-page Automatic Document Feeder; peak daily duty cycle of up to 7,000 sheets⁴
- Seamless integration — includes TWAIN and ISIS drivers for easy integration with nearly any document management system and other solutions across industries
- Engineered for reliability and exceptional quality — pristine image quality while protecting scanned media; features ultrasonic double-feed detection, blank page removal and more
- Versatile scanning for a wide variety of documents — handles extra-long pages (up to 240"), folded papers up to 11" x 17"⁵, ID cards and more
Consequently, configuring only the Windows App client settings described in that article is not the documented way to enable TWAIN scanner redirection. Microsoft’s scanner article gives the Cloud PC registry command and MSI installation steps; it does not provide a step-by-step recipe for deploying those scanner-specific changes through Intune. If you manage Cloud PCs with Intune, use your organization’s supported device-management process to apply the documented configuration, and verify the current Microsoft guidance for the exact deployment method.

TWAIN scanner redirection is a high-level peripheral-reflection workflow. Microsoft’s separate USB redirection guidance covers opaque, low-level USB redirection and says to use high-level redirection methods where possible. Its general USB procedure requires configuration on both the Cloud PC and local device; it is not a substitute for the scanner-specific TWAIN steps above.

- Space saving design: Upright, with top feed and top eject, and a built-in cable organization system
- Reliably handles many different document types: Receipts, photos, business cards, plastic or embossed cards, reports, contracts, long documents, thick or thin documents, and more
- Fast and efficient: Scans both sides of a document at the same time, in color, at up to 25 pages-per-minute, with a 30 sheet automatic feeder, and one-touch operation
- Broad compatibility: Supports Windows and Mac; TWAIN driver also included
Before troubleshooting, check the documented prerequisites
- The local scanner supports TWAIN, and its driver is installed correctly on the local device.
- You are connecting with a supported client and platform; Microsoft’s reviewed scanner guidance specifies Windows App for Windows version 2.0.1070.0.
- The Cloud PC has the
fTWAINRedirectionEnabledpolicy value set to1. - The specified TwainRedirector MSI is installed on that Cloud PC.
- You are not relying solely on the separate Windows App client policies or the low-level USB redirection procedure to enable TWAIN redirection.
Microsoft’s scanner guidance does not establish broad compatibility for every client platform, scanner model, or scanning application. Confirm the current client support details and that the scanner’s manufacturer provides a suitable TWAIN driver for the local operating system.
