There is no single best open-source metaverse stack: the right choice depends on whether you need an XR engine, a persistent-world server, a browser-based social client, a synchronization layer, or a lightweight WebXR framework. Godot is the broadest general-purpose engine in this selection; OpenSimulator is the clearest fit for self-hosted persistent worlds; and A-Frame suits teams building browser-first scenes with HTML and JavaScript.

The seven options below solve different parts of the problem, so treat them as architectural choices rather than a ranked contest. Project capabilities described here come from their documentation and repositories; details such as hosted services, browser support, dependencies, and maintenance can change.

How the seven options differ

“Metaverse development” can mean anything from making an XR scene to operating a persistent world with multiple users. This comparison focuses on each project’s role, documented runtime targets, and multiplayer approach—not on a universal score.

Tool Primary role Documented runtime or delivery Multiplayer approach
Godot Engine General-purpose game and XR engine WebXR and OpenXR-oriented tooling; HTML export uses the compatibility renderer Not specified here as a built-in multiplayer service; choose networking to suit the project
OpenSimulator Persistent virtual-world application server Self-hosted, multi-user 3D environments with multiple clients and protocols Server-based multi-user worlds; optional Hypergrid connectivity
Hubs Foundation stack Browser-based collaborative-space client and foundation stack Web application delivered to each user’s browser Shared rooms using web technologies including WebSockets; confirm current hosting and service architecture
Webaverse Browser-first, self-hostable metaverse engine Browser, desktop, and VR support listed in its repository Repository lists multiplayer voice and chat
JanusWeb Framework and browser for interconnected VR web experiences Desktop, Raspberry Pi ARM64, or server use via an all-in-one binary; web-page deployment is also documented Interconnected experience model; a specific multiplayer service is not stated here
Croquet JavaScript synchronization layer for shared applications Cross-platform browser applications Synchronizes application state through globally deployed reflector servers
A-Frame Declarative WebXR scene framework Browser-based WebXR experiences authored with HTML and JavaScript Networking and production services must be selected separately

Use the table to narrow the category first. Then assess content workflow, operations, moderation, device support, and project activity for your specific deployment.

1. Godot Engine: best general-purpose open-source XR engine

Godot is the broadest engine choice here if you want an editor, scene system, scripting, and more than one XR deployment path. Godot’s official documentation says it has built-in WebXR support, and the project also documents OpenXR-oriented tooling. The February 2025 XR update describes the Godot Meta Toolkit as an open-source, MIT-licensed GDExtension maintained by W4 Games with Meta sponsorship.

WebXR can deliver an XR experience directly through a browser, but Godot’s WebXR documentation notes two practical constraints: HTML export uses the compatibility renderer, and multiview is not available on every WebXR-capable device. Test the actual browser and headset combinations you intend to support rather than assuming one successful device proves universal compatibility.

Choose Godot when: you want a full engine and editor, with browser XR as one target among others. It is less appropriate if your main requirement is a ready-made persistent-world server or a managed multiplayer service.

2. OpenSimulator: best self-hosted persistent-world server

OpenSimulator describes itself as an “open source multi-platform, multi-user 3D application server.” Its project wiki documents extensible virtual environments, multiple clients and protocols, real-time physics, in-world LSL/OSSL scripting, and scene plug-ins. Hypergrid connectivity is optional, which lets operators decide whether to connect their world to a wider network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is the most direct option in the list when control over the world server and data is more important than a turnkey hosted service. That control comes with operational responsibility: the project warns that OpenSimulator is complex and has bugs and quirks. Plan for administration, updates, troubleshooting, and the specific client and protocol combinations your users will need.

3. Hubs Foundation stack: best browser-based collaborative-space foundation

Hubs is oriented around link-accessible shared spaces delivered as a web application in each user’s browser. Its documentation identifies Three.js, WebGL, WebXR, WebSockets, and bitECS among the client’s core technologies. The contribution guide directs developers to Hubs Foundation repositories and public development channels.

That browser-first approach fits a brief where room access and collaborative presence matter more than a traditional game-engine workflow. Before building a product around it, establish which deployment and hosting arrangements are currently available, and evaluate client customization, moderation, and the project’s current operational status. The documentation cited here describes the client and development ecosystem, but does not establish a particular hosted-service offer.

Choose Hubs when: you want a browser-delivered shared-room experience and are prepared to verify the service and deployment model that fits your project.

4. Webaverse: best browser-first self-hostable metaverse engine

The Webaverse repository presents the project as an open-source web3 metaverse game engine that anyone can host. Its listed capabilities include a browser game engine, procedurally generated worlds, multiplayer voice and chat, AI NPCs, desktop and VR support, expressive avatars, and user-uploaded apps. This makes it a broad browser-first option rather than just a scene-rendering library.

Choose Webaverse when: a JavaScript/Node-oriented stack, self-hosting, and a broad set of listed world features match your goals—and you can validate the project’s present-day maintenance and requirements.

5. JanusWeb: best for interconnected VR web experiences

JanusWeb describes itself as a web framework and browser for building rich virtual-reality experiences. Its README documents an all-in-one JanusXR binary for desktop, Raspberry Pi ARM64, or server use. It also describes local-first viewing and deployment as a GitHub, GitLab, or Codeberg page.

That makes JanusWeb a distinctive fit for an interconnected VR web rather than a conventional game-engine pipeline. Its documentation describes several ways to run or publish experiences, but production suitability still depends on current binaries, browser support, and maintenance activity. Confirm those details for your target devices before relying on it.

Choose JanusWeb when: the central idea is a browsable, connected collection of VR web experiences.

6. Croquet: best synchronized multiuser application layer

Croquet is a JavaScript library for synchronizing applications through globally deployed reflector servers, enabling real-time cross-platform interaction in a browser. Its documentation presents Microverse Builder as a way to create shared metaverse worlds with a small amount of code; the Microverse tutorial describes a Worldcore actor/pawn architecture.

Croquet addresses a different layer from an engine or world server: it is aimed at synchronized shared application state. Its reflector-based model can reduce the need to write and operate conventional server code, but it creates a service dependency that should be evaluated alongside the API model, UI framework integration, and operating costs—especially for a large production deployment.

Choose Croquet when: keeping multiple users’ application state in sync is the hard problem and its service model fits your operational requirements.

7. A-Frame: best lightweight standards-based WebXR framework

A-Frame is a lightweight option for teams comfortable with HTML and JavaScript who want declarative scene authoring and browser delivery. Two 2024 research preprints discuss it as an open-source WebXR framework and examine it alongside Networked-Aframe in cross-platform open-metaverse architectures.

A-Frame is a framework layer, not a complete production stack. For multiplayer, teams need to select networking components and production services separately. Compared with Godot, it offers a more browser-and-web-oriented workflow; Godot provides deeper engine and editor capabilities, additional deployment paths, and different performance controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose A-Frame when: you are building a prototype, educational project, or browser-first experience and a full engine would be more than you need.

How to choose an architecture

  • You need an engine and XR tooling: start with Godot, especially if editor-based scene creation and multiple deployment targets matter.
  • You need to operate a persistent world: evaluate OpenSimulator’s server, scripting, and client ecosystem against your administration capacity.
  • You want browser-based shared rooms: assess the Hubs Foundation stack, including the current hosting and moderation arrangements available to you.
  • You want a self-hostable browser-first engine: investigate Webaverse’s current repository requirements and deployment path.
  • You are building a connected VR web: consider JanusWeb, then verify device compatibility and project maintenance.
  • Your central challenge is synchronized state: evaluate Croquet’s reflector-based model and service dependency.
  • You want a minimal WebXR scene layer: use A-Frame if your team can supply the additional networking and production pieces.

There are no comparable adoption, revenue, or market-share figures in the cited project materials, so these recommendations are based on architectural fit rather than popularity. Project status, service availability, and browser or headset support can change; check the relevant project’s official documentation and repository before implementation.
