The image is concept art, not a photograph of Starship on the Moon. It depicts a proposed cargo version of SpaceX’s Starship lowering a rover to the lunar surface with an exterior elevator. NASA’s plans envision Starship HLS carrying astronauts between lunar orbit and the surface; the rover-delivery scene is a separate cargo concept, not a completed mission.
What does the new Starship Moon render show?
The render, featured in Futurism’s April 27, 2024 article, shows a Starship cargo lander above the lunar surface as a rover is lowered on an elevator. It illustrates a proposed way to deliver large equipment to the Moon. It does not establish that a Starship has landed there, that a rover has been delivered, or that the depicted cargo configuration is operational.

NASA has described adapting existing human-lander designs for cargo by changing payload interfaces and deployment mechanisms. The concept aims to make large equipment deliveries possible without treating the crew vehicle and cargo lander as identical mission configurations.

Starship HLS (Human Landing System) is the lunar lander SpaceX is developing for NASA’s Artemis program. NASA describes it as roughly 50 meters tall and equipped with an elevator to move crew and cargo between the vehicle and the lunar surface. Its intended role is to carry astronauts from lunar orbit down to the Moon and return them to orbit. NASA’s Human Landing Systems overview describes the program and its planned mission roles.

For the Artemis III mission concept NASA described on November 20, 2024, Orion would carry four astronauts to lunar orbit. Two would transfer to Starship HLS and descend to the surface while two remained aboard Orion; after surface activities, the Starship crew would return to Orion. NASA also said SpaceX would conduct an uncrewed lunar landing demonstration before the crewed Artemis III mission. These are mission plans described in 2024, not reports of completed events. NASA’s account of the planned mission sequence provides that description.
Will Starship land a rover on the Moon?
NASA’s cargo-lander concept envisages delivering large equipment, including pressurized rovers, but the render is not evidence that a rover-delivery mission has happened or is scheduled for a definite date. In April 2024, Futurism reported NASA projections that cargo variants could land about 26,000–33,000 pounds (12–15 metric tons) and would enter service no earlier than Artemis VII. Both the mass and timing are projections reported in 2024, not demonstrated capability or a guaranteed current schedule. Futurism’s report includes the cargo concept and estimate.

NASA HLS program manager Lisa Watson-Morgan explained the rationale: “It’s essential that NASA has the capability to land not just astronauts, but large pieces of equipment, such as pressurized rovers, on the Moon for maximum return on science and exploration activities.” The goal is to enable surface exploration with equipment too large or heavy for smaller cargo deliveries.

What do the published Starship HLS figures mean?
A NASA Technical Reports Server presentation titled “Space X Starship HLS: The next Human Lunar Lander” lists a 50-meter height, 9-meter diameter, 1,200-ton propellant capacity and payload capacity of more than 100 tons. These are figures presented for the concept, not verified operational performance. The presentation date is not established in the available source listing. NASA’s current HLS reference independently describes Starship HLS as roughly 50 meters tall, but that does not validate the other presentation figures as achieved capability. The presentation record provides the listed specifications.

How does Starship HLS fit with other planned lunar landers?
NASA’s published mission assignments place SpaceX’s Starship HLS in the Artemis III and Artemis IV context, while Blue Origin is developing Blue Moon for Artemis V. NASA says Artemis IV Starship development adds requirements that include docking with Gateway for crew transfer and landing more mass. These are planned program roles, not evidence that either lander has completed those missions. NASA’s HLS overview outlines the assignments.
The available information supports comparing intended roles and development context, not ranking the landers by cost, readiness, or demonstrated performance: comparable figures for those measures are not provided in these sources.

What is the current schedule caveat?
NASA’s Office of Inspector General said on March 10, 2026, that Human Landing System development challenges will delay planned Artemis launch dates. The watchdog also said NASA currently lacks the capability to rescue crew stranded in space or on the lunar surface. That assessment is a more current caution than the 2024 cargo-service projection; it does not supply a replacement date for a Starship cargo landing. The NASA OIG summary details the concerns.
