The best iPad comic app depends on what you read and how you get it. Marvel Unlimited and DC Universe Infinite suit publisher back catalogues; Shonen Jump is aimed at current and classic manga; Panels manages CBZ, CBR and other personal files; and GlobalComix provides broader multi-publisher discovery. The recommendations below are for U.S. readers and were reviewed against information available August 16–18, 2026.
Choose by reading pattern first
- Marvel back catalogue: Marvel Unlimited.
- DC back catalogue: DC Universe Infinite.
- Owned CBZ, CBR or EPUB files: Panels – Comic Reader.
- Shonen Jump manga: Shonen Jump Manga & Comics.
- Indie, international and multi-publisher discovery: GlobalComix.
These are different product types. A subscription grants access while your account and plan remain active; an individual purchase is usually tied to a vendor account and may use DRM; a DRM-free file can generally be backed up and opened in compatible software, subject to its licence. Library-lending apps such as Hoopla depend on a participating public library.

DRM-free store purchases can generally be backed up and used in compatible software, while DRM-protected books from another service may not import. Before moving a library, verify current CBZ, CBR, EPUB and PDF support, cloud integrations, whether CBR archives require conversion, and which syncing features require a paid tier. Metadata quality and folder organization depend partly on your files.
Choose it if
You already own digital comics, buy DRM-free releases, or want a library that remains useful without a continuing publisher subscription.

You expect a large Marvel or DC catalogue included with the reader.

WEBTOON and Tapas
These platforms are built primarily around vertical-scroll webcomics, a different format from page-based superhero comics and manga.
Hoopla
Hoopla can provide free or low-cost borrowing through an eligible public-library card. Availability, loan periods and catalogue size depend on the local library.
Apple Books
Apple Books is useful for individually purchased compatible books when you prefer buying specific volumes instead of subscribing, though purchases remain associated with the Apple account and may be DRM-bound.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOffline reading, cancellation and storage
- Confirm whether downloads expire or require periodic account authorization.
- Assume subscription downloads become inaccessible after cancellation unless the service explicitly says otherwise.
- Purchased books usually remain in the vendor account, but portability depends on DRM.
- Do not treat a download as an exportable backup unless the seller provides a DRM-free file.
- Check iPad storage before travel and remove completed downloads afterward.
- Subscriptions bought through Apple generally auto-renew and must be managed in the Apple ID subscription settings; vendor-specific instructions also apply. Marvel provides account guidance through Marvel Support.
Buying checklist
- Check that your country has the app and the series you want; licensing differs by territory.
- Confirm the current minimum iPadOS version, especially on an older iPad. Shonen Jump currently lists iPadOS 17 or later.
- Search for several favorite series rather than judging by a catalogue total.
- Identify whether releases are same-day, delayed, digital-first or rotating.
- Check portrait full-page reading, landscape two-page spreads, right-to-left manga order, guided view and vertical scrolling where relevant.
- Read the offline rules: download limits, expiration, revalidation and whether all titles qualify.
- Decide whether you want temporary access, vendor-account purchases or DRM-free files.
- Review auto-renewal, family-account and parental-control settings; services may include mature themes, violence, profanity or sexual content.
- Verify cloud syncing, search and reading-order tools before committing to a long series.
Final verdict
Choose Marvel Unlimited for a Marvel-heavy reading life, DC Universe Infinite for DC, Panels for a personal comic-file collection, Shonen Jump for mainstream manga at its observed U.S. price, and GlobalComix for broader discovery. Readers who want everything may combine one publisher subscription with Panels or individual purchases; no single app in this shortlist provides every catalogue, format and ownership model.
