Microsoft Edge still supports importing favorites from Google Chrome on desktop. If Chrome or its favorites option is missing, the safest workaround is to export bookmarks from the correct Chrome profile as an HTML file, then import that file into Edge. An apparently successful import may place everything in an Imported folder rather than directly on the Favorites bar.
Identify what is actually missing
| Symptom | Most useful first action |
|---|---|
| Chrome is absent from Edge’s source list | Use Chrome’s HTML export and Edge’s HTML-file import; then investigate profile location, installation scope and policy. |
| Chrome appears, but Favorites or bookmarks is unavailable | Verify the bookmarks in the intended Chrome profile and use the HTML fallback. |
| The wrong Chrome profile is offered | Export that profile separately and import the file into the matching Edge profile. |
| Edge reports success, but nothing is visible | Check edge://favorites, the Favorites bar, Imported, Other favorites and the active Edge profile. |
| Only passwords appear | Treat password migration separately; export bookmarks to HTML. |
| The computer is managed by work or school | Check edge://policy and ask the administrator about import restrictions. |
Try Edge’s built-in Chrome import
On Windows or macOS, open Edge and go to Settings and more (…) > Settings > Profiles > Import browser data. You can also open edge://settings/profiles/importBrowsingData directly.

- Choose Import beside the Google Chrome entry.
- Select Favorites or bookmarks (and any other categories you deliberately want to migrate).
- Select Import.
- Open
edge://favoritesand inspect the Favorites bar and its folders.
Microsoft documents this workflow and the HTML-file alternative in its Edge favorites and passwords instructions. Imported items may be grouped in a folder named Imported.

Confirm the bookmarks exist in the right Chrome profile
Before changing Edge, open the Chrome profile that should be migrated and visit chrome://bookmarks/. Check Bookmarks bar, Other bookmarks and custom folders. If Chrome has Personal, Work, School or other profiles, switch profiles and repeat the check. Edge may be inspecting a different local profile from the one currently open in Chrome.

Use the dependable HTML export and import
Export from Chrome
- Switch to the intended Chrome profile.
- Open the bookmark manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Oon Windows or Linux. On macOS, use Chrome’s Bookmarks and lists > Bookmark manager command. - In the bookmark manager, select its three-dot menu and choose Export bookmarks.
- Save the resulting
.htmlfile in Documents or another known location. Use a descriptive name for each profile, such asChrome-Personal-Bookmarks.html.
Google explains the HTML method in its Chrome bookmark import and export help. The exported file is readable text containing your bookmark URLs, so treat it as private and remove it securely after migration if the links are confidential.
Import into Edge
- Open
edge://settings/profiles/importBrowsingData. - Under Other import locations, select Import beside Import browser data now.
- Set Import from to Favorites or bookmarks HTML file.
- Select Choose file, select the Chrome
.htmlfile, and choose Open. - Wait for completion and select Done.
- Open
edge://favorites; check the Favorites bar, Imported, Other favorites and any nested folders.
This route does not require Edge to detect Chrome’s installation or profile and does not overwrite existing favorites. Repeating it can create duplicate folders, so keep one labeled export per source profile.

If Chrome is not listed at all
Make sure this is desktop Edge
The documented import workflow is primarily for desktop Edge. Microsoft’s ImportFavorites policy documentation lists Windows and macOS support and marks Android and iOS unsupported for that policy; mobile controls are different.
Start Chrome normally, then restart Edge
Open Chrome, switch to the intended profile, and close it normally. Restart Edge and revisit the import page. This can help when a local Chrome profile has not yet been initialized, but it is not a guaranteed requirement.

Check profile and installation scope
Chrome installed for another operating-system user, a portable/custom installation, or a non-default user-data directory may not be visible to Edge running under your account. A Microsoft Tech Community report describes custom profile-path detection as an environment-specific issue; the HTML method remains safer than moving database files. See that discussion for context.
Check organizational policy
Open edge://policy and look for ImportFavorites, AutoImportAtFirstRun and other browser-data or profile-directory policies. Microsoft states that when ImportFavorites is disabled, favorites are not imported at first run and users cannot import them manually. Do not edit registry or Group Policy settings on a managed computer; ask your administrator for an approved migration method.

If Edge says the import succeeded
Imported favorites are a one-time copy into the currently active Edge profile. They are not an ongoing connection to Chrome. Check these locations in order:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
edge://favorites, including every folder.- The Favorites bar and its overflow area if the bar is crowded.
- A folder named Imported.
- Other favorites and nested folders.
- The Edge profile currently shown in the profile menu.
Chrome Sync and Edge Sync are separate systems. Importing Chrome bookmarks does not create two-way synchronization between the browsers.

Handling multiple Chrome profiles safely
For each Chrome profile, switch to it, verify its bookmarks, export a separately named HTML file, then select the corresponding Edge profile before importing. For example:
- Export
Chrome-Personal-Bookmarks.htmlfrom Chrome Personal. - Export
Chrome-Work-Bookmarks.htmlfrom Chrome Work. - Create or select the matching Edge profile.
- Import only that profile’s file and confirm its destination folder.
Microsoft community reports document incorrect or unavailable profile choices in some environments; exporting each profile avoids relying on automatic detection. See the Microsoft Q&A discussion.
What is and is not transferred
| Method | Transfers | Does not transfer automatically |
|---|---|---|
| Direct Chrome import | Categories that your Edge version and policy expose, potentially including favorites and passwords | Anything unavailable, blocked or stored in an unselected profile |
| Chrome HTML export to Edge HTML import | Favorites/bookmarks and their folder structure | Passwords, history, cookies, extensions, open tabs and browser settings |
If you need passwords, use Edge’s supported Chrome-password import separately when it is available. A bookmarks HTML file is not a password-migration file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAvoid risky database-file fixes
Do not delete Edge’s Bookmarks file or replace it with Chrome’s raw profile database as a normal repair. Such copying can overwrite existing favorites, select the wrong profile, conflict with sync, cause corruption or fail while a browser is running. A Microsoft community answer mentions raw profile copying only as a fallback for unusual cases; use the supported import or HTML method first. See the related Microsoft Q&A.
