Baldur’s Gate 3 — best for tactical choices and party role-play
Choose this if you want turn-based party combat, flexible approaches to encounters, companions with their own stories, and decisions that can change how events unfold. PCGamesN highlights its companions, dialogue options, and alternate outcomes. It is a natural first pick for players who enjoy thinking through a fight and shaping a story through role-play. Larian Studios confirms that the PC version has full controller support in its controller support FAQ.

-
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered — best for a story-rich open world
Choose this for a focused protagonist journey set in a large fantasy world. The publisher frames the story around Geralt’s search for Ciri across the Northern Kingdoms. The Remastered edition upgrades visuals, performance, and gameplay, and includes the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions. CD PROJEKT RED says it released on September 29, 2026; owners of the base game can receive a free upgrade on qualifying platforms. Confirm platform, ownership, and regional eligibility on the publisher’s page before counting on an upgrade.
-
Elden Ring — best for exploration and demanding action combat
Choose this if you want to explore a hostile world at your own pace, discover its story largely through the environment, and build a character around the weapons, abilities, and tactics you find. PC Gamer emphasizes its expansive world, boss challenges, and build crafting; TechRadar points to its exploration and environmental storytelling. Its action combat and difficult encounters make it a better fit for players who welcome a challenge than for those seeking a relaxed, dialogue-led adventure.

Fallout 4 - PC- Next generation of open-world gaming
- Developed by Bethesda Game Studios under the direction of Todd Howard
- Fallout 4 is the follow up to the 2008 'Game of the Year' Fallout 3
- First title from the world-renowned studio since the release of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
-
Cyberpunk 2077 — best for a futuristic, story-led RPG
Choose this for a science-fiction setting, a central narrative, and character development in a dense urban world. Current editorial coverage discusses the improvements made since launch and the role of the Phantom Liberty expansion. Treat the base game and expansion as separate purchase considerations: coverage of the expansion’s additions does not mean every feature requires it. Check the current edition contents on the relevant store page before buying.
-
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim — best for open-ended fantasy roaming
Choose this when you want to set your own goals: follow the main quest, take on side activities, explore, or simply wander. GamesRadar describes its player-directed activities, while PC Gamer notes its enduring mod community. Mods can alter the experience substantially, so check compatibility and instructions for the specific version you own before adding them.
-
Mass Effect Legendary Edition — best for a connected science-fiction trilogy
Choose this for a companion-centered science-fiction story in which choices and relationships connect across three games. The collection’s linked narrative is its central appeal, but it also means a much larger time commitment than a single campaign. It suits players who want to follow one continuing story rather than sample a short, standalone adventure.
Rank #3
Dragon Age 2 - Bioware Signature Edition - PC- Enjoy the game's atypical, story-within-a-story nonlinear narrative style
- Embark upon an all-new adventure that takes place across an entire decade and shapes itself around every decision you make
- Determine your rise to power from a destitute refugee to the revered champion of the land
- Think like a general and fight like a Spartan with dynamic new combat mechanics that put you right in the heart of battle whether you are a mage, rogue, or warrior

-
Fallout: New Vegas — best for faction politics and consequential choices
Choose this for a role-playing story built around competing factions, reputation, and political power struggles. PC Gamer emphasizes how faction relationships shape the experience. It is a strong match for players who value how their decisions affect groups and outcomes more than a strictly linear sequence of quests.

Dragon Age: Inquisition — best for fantasy companions and party development
Choose this for a fantasy adventure centered on a large cast, party development, and decisions about how to respond to events. PCGamesN highlights its companions, player choice, and race and class selection. It is especially appealing if you want to develop a group of characters alongside your own protagonist.
-
Final Fantasy XIV — best for an ongoing online RPG
Choose this if you want a persistent online world rather than a self-contained solo campaign. TechRadar highlights its free trial, but trial access and subscription terms can change; check the current limits and terms before committing. Its ongoing format is a different kind of time commitment from completing a single-player story.
Rank #4
Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood - PC- Customer must have Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn to play Stormblood
- Increased level cap up to level 70
- New Jobs – Red Mage and Samurai
- New Beast Tribe and Primal
- New Alliance Raid
-
Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous — best for deep character building and tactical play
Choose this if you want extensive build choices and a substantial campaign with tactical combat. PC Gamer describes its turn-based combat, complex character building, companions, and quests. The depth is a strength if you enjoy tuning a character and planning encounters, but it may feel demanding if you prefer simpler builds and quicker decisions.
How to choose the right PC RPG for you
Start with the kind of decisions you want to make. A game may be called an RPG while emphasizing very different things: tactical turns, real-time action, exploration, dialogue, character builds, or online progression.

- Combat: For tactical, turn-based party fights, consider Baldur’s Gate 3 or Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. For action centered on combat mastery, consider Elden Ring. If you want combat to sit alongside a broader open-world journey, look at The Witcher 3 or Skyrim.
- Exploration: Choose an open world if wandering and finding your own activities are part of the appeal. Elden Ring rewards discovery in a hostile setting; Skyrim is more open-ended in how you set goals. A more directed story may suit you better if you want a stronger narrative path.
- Story and companions: For a party whose characters and choices are central, consider Baldur’s Gate 3 or Dragon Age: Inquisition. For choices across a connected trilogy, choose Mass Effect Legendary Edition. For a protagonist-led fantasy journey, consider The Witcher 3.
- Build depth: If you enjoy planning classes, abilities, and tactics, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous is the most explicit fit on this list. If you want character customization with challenging action, consider Elden Ring.
- Play mode and time: Most recommendations here are built around a campaign; Final Fantasy XIV is the ongoing online option. A trilogy collection or an edition with expansions can take much longer than a standalone game, so consider how much time you want to commit.
Which RPG should you play first?
Use your preferred play style as the tie-breaker:
- For tactical choices and a party: start with Baldur’s Gate 3.
- For a story-led fantasy world: start with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered.
- For action combat and exploration: start with Elden Ring.
- For an open-ended fantasy sandbox: start with Skyrim.
- For an ongoing online world: try Final Fantasy XIV, after checking its current trial and subscription terms.
What is the best RPG for a low-end PC?
This list does not establish a lowest-spec winner, and a game’s age or genre is not enough to predict how well it will run on a particular computer. Check the current Windows requirements for the exact edition you plan to play, then compare them with your PC’s processor, memory, graphics hardware, operating system, and free storage. Baldur’s Gate 3, for example, requires an SSD and 150 GB of available storage according to Larian’s current requirements page; that figure is specific to that game, not a general RPG benchmark.
Best Value
- Fight for survival against terrors of the outside world, radiation, and mutants after nuclear fallout
- Latest in human ability simulation affords unlimited customization of characters
- Expansive world in modern super deluxe HD graphics
- Features ability to pause time in combat, target specific body parts, and queue up attacks
- 1st or 3rd person perspective
Which RPG has the best story?
There is no objective story winner here; the best fit depends on what you mean by “best.” Choose The Witcher 3 for a protagonist-led search through a fantasy world, Baldur’s Gate 3 for branching dialogue and party role-play, or Mass Effect Legendary Edition for a story and choices that span a trilogy. For an online world that continues beyond one campaign, consider Final Fantasy XIV.
Check Windows compatibility and edition details before buying
Requirements, editions, store availability, and upgrade eligibility can change. Before purchase, check the current publisher or store page for the exact Windows edition, its hardware requirements, included expansions, and any upgrade conditions. A Microsoft Store PC role-playing chart listed Baldur’s Gate 3, Skyrim Special Edition, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth among paid PC RPG listings when accessed; that is a changing storefront snapshot, not a guarantee of availability or a recommendation.
Controller support is also game-specific. Larian confirms full controller support for Baldur’s Gate 3 on PC. Steam’s controller documentation lists official Xbox controllers among supported options and explains that games have different levels of controller support. Do not assume that this list’s other games offer the same experience.
