More system RAM can make larger local AI models, longer contexts, or additional concurrent workloads practical—but it does not add GPU memory or guarantee faster responses. The difference is whether your setup can keep the model and its working data in memory, and where the runtime places them. Because no specific machine or before-and-after measurements are established here, this is a guide to what a RAM upgrade can change, not a claim about measured gains on one computer.
What more RAM changes when you run AI locally
Loading a model uses memory for its weights and other parameters. LM Studio says this allocation is in the computer’s RAM. More system memory can therefore give a model runner more room to load a model and accommodate the rest of the workload, including context and other open applications. It can change which model sizes or configurations are feasible; it does not, by itself, establish how quickly a model will generate tokens.

LM Studio’s current requirements documentation, accessed in 2026, recommends at least 16 GB of RAM for Windows and 16 GB or more for Apple Silicon Macs. It says an 8 GB Mac may still run smaller models with modest context sizes. These are LM Studio’s platform-specific recommendations, not universal minimums for every runtime or model. Its Windows guidance also recommends at least 4 GB of dedicated VRAM.
System RAM and GPU VRAM solve different constraints
System RAM is the computer’s general memory; dedicated VRAM is memory on the graphics card. Adding system RAM does not increase VRAM. If a model or workload needs to fit entirely in GPU memory, extra system memory does not make it fit there.

Placement can be checked in Ollama with ollama ps. Its output distinguishes a model placed entirely on GPU, entirely in system memory (shown as CPU), or split between CPU and GPU. More system RAM can help provide room for system-memory placement or a split, but the documentation does not establish a universal speed penalty for either. Actual performance depends on the model, runtime, and hardware.
What to check before deciding whether RAM is the bottleneck
“Need more memory” can refer to different limits. Consider these factors together rather than treating a single RAM figure as a promise that a model will run well:

- Tested Timings: 30-40-40-76
- Feature Overclock: XMP 3.0 / EXPO overclocking supported
- Compatibility: Tested across latest DDR5 platforms for reliability on high performance

- System RAM and compatibility: Check the computer’s supported capacity, memory generation, form factor, and whether its memory is upgradeable. General platform guidance cannot identify a compatible module for an unknown device.
- Dedicated VRAM and placement: Determine whether the model fits in GPU memory or is being placed partly or wholly in system memory.
- Model size and quantization: Larger models generally demand more memory for their weights. Quantized versions use fewer bits to represent weights and can reduce memory use, with trade-offs that vary by model and configuration.
- Context and cache: Longer conversations or prompts can add memory use beyond the model weights.
- Your goal: Having enough room to load a model, increasing throughput, and keeping several models or requests available at once are different outcomes. More RAM may address one without guaranteeing the others.
Reduce memory demand with model and runtime settings
Choose a quantized model when appropriate
The llama.cpp project supports integer quantization levels from 1.5-bit through 8-bit and describes quantization as a way to reduce memory use. It also supports CPU-and-GPU hybrid inference for models larger than the total available VRAM. These options change the memory and performance trade-off; the resulting quality and speed depend on the model, quantization, runtime, and hardware.

Ollama documents a default context window of 4096 tokens; this is a software default, not a hardware requirement. Its documentation says Flash Attention can reduce memory use as context grows when supported. Ollama also offers key/value (K/V) cache quantization: its FAQ estimates that q8_0 uses about half the memory of an f16 cache, while q4_0 uses about one-quarter. Those comparisons refer to cache memory, not model weights. Ollama notes that q4_0 can have a more noticeable precision impact at higher context sizes. Results depend on software support and configuration.

Consider concurrent models separately
Ollama says multiple models can be loaded concurrently when sufficient memory is available. If memory is insufficient, requests may be queued and previously loaded models unloaded to make room. For GPU inference, Ollama says each additional model must fit completely in VRAM for concurrent model loads. System RAM can help with some workloads, but it does not remove that GPU-memory constraint.

- Record the baseline: Note the model, quantization, context length, runtime, system RAM, GPU and VRAM, and whether the model is placed on CPU, GPU, or both. In Ollama, check placement with
ollama ps. - Define the outcome you want: For example, loading a model that previously would not fit, using a larger context, or keeping more than one model available. Do not treat these as interchangeable with faster token generation.
- Change one variable at a time: Compare the same model and runtime settings before and after the upgrade, then separately test any change to quantization, context, or cache configuration.
- Verify memory compatibility before buying: Use the computer manufacturer’s specifications or a reliable device-specific compatibility source to confirm supported capacity, memory type, form factor, and upgradeability. The general recommendations above are not a parts list.
A meaningful result is specific: what became possible, under which model and settings, and whether placement changed. Without measurements from a particular machine, a general RAM recommendation cannot establish a personal speed improvement.
