Digger is a fictional climate-disaster satire, not a factual account of climate science. Calling it “a disaster” is a critical judgment: the film’s deliberately outsized comic approach may be the very thing that makes its serious climate anxieties harder to land. Early coverage suggests a movie balancing exaggerated farce with sober concerns, rather than a straightforward disaster thriller.
What is Digger about?
Warner Bros. describes Digger as an original film about a powerful man who tries to prove he is humanity’s savior before a disaster he unleashed destroys everything. Tom Cruise plays the title character. The premise sets up a collision between self-importance, catastrophe and the urge to control the story of one’s own damage.

The Associated Press characterizes the film as an “over-the-top, climate-disaster satire.” That is a critic’s description of the movie, not a scientific assessment of climate risks. The film is fictional; its premise and tone should not be treated as evidence about real-world climate events.

Why might the satire feel like a disaster?
The film’s central tonal challenge is how to make climate anxiety funny without making it feel trivial. The AP review sees it balancing broad farce with sober anxieties. That contrast can give satire its bite: absurd behavior becomes a way to expose the seriousness underneath. But if the exaggeration overwhelms the concern, the comedy can leave the stakes feeling remote rather than urgent.

That tension supports the sharp headline judgment, but it does not establish that the film has failed for every viewer. The evidence available this soon after release is one contemporary review, not a settled critical consensus, audience verdict or measure of commercial performance. Whether Digger’s excess works as pointed satire or simply feels excessive remains a matter of response, not fact.
Who made the film?
Alejandro G. Iñárritu directed Digger and wrote its screenplay with Alexander Dinelaris, Nicolás Giacobone and Sabina Berman. The story is credited to Berman and Iñárritu with Jez Butterworth. Cruise is both the star and a producer, alongside Iñárritu and Mary Parent.
The cast also includes Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg and Jesse Plemons. Warner Bros. credits Emmanuel Lubezki as cinematographer and Cosmo Sheldrake as composer. The studio says the movie was shot entirely in VistaVision, a production-format detail rather than a claim about the film’s critical quality.

How did Digger take shape?
In an Associated Press interview published July 14, 2026, Iñárritu said the idea came after The Revenant and that he spent a decade completing the story. That is the director’s account of the project’s development; it explains the long gestation, but it does not by itself prove the finished film succeeds.

Where and when was it released?
Warner Bros. lists an international release beginning September 30, 2026, and a North American theatrical and IMAX release on October 2, 2026. Those dates describe the release schedule published by the studio; regional showtimes and later streaming or home-media availability are not established here.
For the premise, credits, format and release details, see Warner Bros.’ official Digger page. The early critical framing comes from the Associated Press review; Iñárritu’s development account was reported in an Associated Press interview.
