Toast vs. Clover: How to Choose a Restaurant POS in 2026

Toast and Clover fit different restaurant workflows and configurations. Compare equivalent hardware, processing, integrations, support, and contract terms—not just the monthly plan price.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a U.S. restaurant, the better fit between Toast and Clover depends on service workflow, hardware needs, and the complete written quote—not one advertised monthly price. Compare the same locations, devices, payment volume, and required features, then check which capabilities are built in, which come from third parties, and what your agreement says about support and leaving.

What this comparison covers

Toast’s comparison page, updated September 17, 2026, compares Toast Restaurant Platform with Clover’s Restaurant Growth plan, which Toast describes as Clover’s primary restaurant offering sold directly through Clover’s website. Toast says the comparison does not cover Clover Sport, Clover Reserve, or other products, whose pricing, features, and terms may differ. Because Toast is one of the competitors, treat its side-by-side claims as vendor statements and check Clover’s own disclosures and the specific terms in your quote. Both offer cloud-based POS systems, but the useful distinction for a buyer is how each covers the restaurant’s required workflows, hardware layout, and integrations. Toast describes many products as native to its platform; Clover offers some capabilities through third-party providers in its App Market. Ask whether each feature is native, an add-on, or an integration, whether it costs extra, and who supports it.

Compare the complete cost, not the headline subscription

The figures below are U.S. vendor-published prices for the configurations and conditions described by the sources; they are not a matched estimate for your restaurant. Processing, hardware needs, payment options, and seller arrangements can change the total.

Offer described Published price What to account for
Toast entry-level plan $69 per month, or an option advertised at $0 per month with no upfront cost Toast says the price is for new customers at a single location and includes the first hardware terminal subscription; subsequent devices incur extra charges. Its $0 Pay-as-You-Go option has a per-transaction platform fee and a two-year agreement. Other flexible payment options may involve financing or sales-based payments. Toast says processing rates are custom quoted. Toast comparison · Toast pricing
Clover Restaurant Growth $89.95 per month before hardware, including the first device subscription; $19.95 per month for each additional device These figures appear in Toast’s comparison. Clover says product and payment prices vary by business type, and its full-service bundle page directs prospective buyers to contact sales. Do not assume the figures apply to a reseller, another Clover plan, or another region. Toast comparison · Clover full-service bundles · Clover terms

Neither figure alone establishes which system will cost less. Toast says its processing rates are custom quoted. Clover says processing is separate from a subscription, with pricing and termination terms dependent on the product and service provider. Compare card-present and keyed rates, per-transaction charges, monthly fees, add-ons, hardware, setup, financing, contract length, and any exit or buyout obligation together.

Request quotes on identical assumptions

  1. Give both providers the same location count, terminal and handheld count, printer and kitchen-display needs, and expected card-present and keyed payment volume.
  2. List required functions, including table service or quick service workflows, online ordering, kitchen operations, employee management, integrations, and multi-location needs.
  3. Request an itemized written quote covering hardware purchase or subscription, software, processing rates and fixed fees, add-ons, installation, shipping, taxes, training, financing, agreement term, renewal, cancellation, buyout, and support.
  4. For every integration, ask whether it is third-party, whether there is an additional charge or data handoff, and which company handles support when something fails.

Match the system to service and hardware needs

Clover’s current U.S. full-service bundles show how device configuration changes by tier. Each listed tier includes Restaurant Growth software; the devices below are the bundles described on Clover’s page, and offers can change.

Use the restaurant’s actual floor plan and service pattern to size hardware. A quick-service counter may prioritize a terminal, receipt printing, and ordering flow; table service may depend on mapping, tabs, handheld ordering, bill splitting, and a kitchen workflow. Count every device and accessory the operation needs—terminals, handhelds, printers, cash drawers, kitchen displays, and customer-facing screens—before comparing totals. The sources do not establish a matched Toast hardware configuration against each Clover bundle, so obtain the equivalent list from Toast rather than assuming a one-to-one device comparison.

Check contract, support, and purchase channel

Read the provider-specific exit terms

Clover says its subscriptions are non-cancelable and not eligible for refunds, though they may be broken through a buyout or upgrade, and the customer may pay off a subscription at any time. At the end of the term, equipment may be purchased or returned. If no choice is made, Clover says the subscription extends month-to-month at the same monthly charge; it says to notify it at least 30 days before the term ends to avoid that continuation. Clover also says provider contract terms and termination fees vary, so read the agreement from the actual seller or service provider rather than relying on a general product page. Clover terms

Confirm who answers when something goes wrong

Toast’s comparison says U.S. customers can reach Toast support seven days a week, 7 a.m.–12 a.m. Eastern Time. Clover support channels depend on product and seller, while Clover’s broad pricing page separately advertises 24/7 support. Ask for the support contact, hours, escalation process, and responsibility for integrated third-party products in writing for the exact offer you are considering. Toast comparison · Clover terms

Verify Clover hardware seller and processor compatibility

Clover says hardware is also sold through trusted retailers, including Restaurant Depot and Sam’s Club, and cautions that devices bought or leased from other sellers cannot be used with other payment processors. Before buying through a retailer or marketplace, verify seller authorization, the processor you will use, and compatibility with your intended service arrangement. Clover hardware sales information

Use a decision rule, not a universal winner

  • Favor a workflow-first shortlist: include the platform that clearly supports the restaurant’s service model and required functions in the quoted configuration.
  • Favor a hardware-complete quote: compare the devices and accessories needed to run service, not a software price against a bundle price.
  • Favor clear integration ownership: identify third-party dependencies, added charges, data handoffs, and support responsibility before signing.
  • Favor terms you can accept: compare agreement length, renewal, cancellation, buyout, device ownership or return, and support commitments.
  • Revisit the decision for multiple locations: specify location count and required multi-location workflows in both quote requests; the cited entry-level price terms are for single-location new customers, and these sources do not establish a like-for-like multi-location total.

Toast’s comparison cites Toast internal data for average annual GMV of U.S. Toast customers in 2025 at $1.8 million, and cites IBISWorld’s 2025 U.S. restaurant industry average revenue of $1.2 million across more than 858,000 restaurants. GMV and industry revenue are different measures and populations; the figures do not show that Toast caused higher revenue or support a POS performance comparison. Toast comparison statistics
