Toast is not the only option for restaurant payments and point of sale. Square for Restaurants, Clover, Lightspeed Restaurant, TouchBistro, and SpotOn are candidates worth comparing—but there is no best choice for every restaurant. Match each system to your service style, kitchen and table workflows, hardware needs, payment terms, and total cost, then compare current written quotes.
Which Toast alternatives should you compare?
A 2026 comparison identifies five alternatives to screen: Square for Restaurants, Clover, Lightspeed Restaurant, TouchBistro, and SpotOn. Its fit descriptions are a starting point, not independently tested recommendations. The right shortlist depends on how your restaurant operates.

| System | Initial screening cue | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Square for Restaurants | Smaller restaurants and operators seeking a lower-friction alternative. | Current plan and processing terms, hardware, feature tier, and whether its workflows cover your operation’s complexity. Square describes menu reporting and kitchen display functionality; KDS app charges apply per device on applicable paid tiers. Square pricing. |
| Clover | Hardware-first and counter-service operators. | Who supplies the system, current contract and processing terms, hardware ownership, and required restaurant features. Clover terms may depend on the provider; confirm the offer in writing. |
| Lightspeed Restaurant | Growing or multi-location groups looking for deeper configuration. | Current integrations, location controls, inventory and kitchen workflows, hardware, support, and payment terms. |
| TouchBistro | Full-service and table-service dining rooms. | Supported devices, offline behavior, payment and contract terms, table workflows, support, and a current quote. Its cross-vendor guide dates to March 2023, so do not rely on it for current plans or features. |
| SpotOn | An additional candidate to include in a written quote comparison; a secondary source describes posted-price positioning. | Current station pricing, included hardware, processing fees, support, and contract length directly with the vendor. |
How to choose based on your restaurant’s workflow
Begin with how orders move through the business, not with the monthly plan headline. A POS combines software, payment processing, hardware, support, and contract terms; a seemingly low subscription may not reflect the complete cost or the features you need.
- Service style: Identify whether you run counter service, full table service, or a mix. For table service, test seating, coursing, modifiers, split checks, and payment at the table.
- Kitchen operations: Confirm order routing, kitchen display system (KDS) support, ticket updates, and whether each station or device adds a charge.
- Ordering and integrations: Check online ordering, delivery connections, and compatibility with the other tools you use. Ask which integrations are included and which cost extra.
- Multiple locations: If you operate more than one site, test menu controls, reporting, and the process for making changes across locations.
- Connectivity and recovery: Ask what continues to work during an internet outage, what data is stored or synced later, and what steps staff must take to recover.
- Devices and replacement: Verify supported terminals, tablets, printers, and KDS screens against the vendor’s current compatibility list before buying equipment.
TouchBistro’s guide to restaurant POS systems notes that systems differ in platform and workflow capabilities. Because that guide was published in 2023, treat it as category context rather than confirmation of any candidate’s current capabilities. TouchBistro’s guide.

Compare the complete cost, not just the plan price
Request a written quote for the same configuration from every candidate. The reviewed vendor pages do not establish a complete, standardized total for all five systems, so a published starting price is not enough to make a fair comparison.
- Software charges per location, terminal, or device
- Card processing rate and per-transaction fee, including any differences by payment method
- Hardware, installation, and replacement costs
- Paid add-ons, integrations, and KDS devices
- Contract duration, cancellation fees, and payment-processing commitments
- Support coverage and any charges for support or service
- Data migration, staff training, and setup costs
Toast says Toast Care is included with software subscriptions and available 24/7/365. Its pricing page says the first hardware terminal subscription is included in listed pricing for the applicable offer and that additional charges apply for subsequent devices; the page was updated August 20, 2026. Confirm that those terms apply to your location and package. Toast pricing.

Validate the switch before signing
- Document your setup. List locations, terminals, payment types, menus, modifiers, kitchen stations, integrations, and any current hardware you hope to keep.
- Prepare real service scenarios. Ask each vendor to demonstrate a typical order, a modified order, a split check, a void or refund, and an online order flowing to the kitchen.
- Test the busy or unusual cases. Include coursing, menu changes, a device or network failure, and a multi-location update if those matter to your operation.
- Get the same quote structure. Use the cost checklist above and request written terms for processing, hardware, contract length, add-ons, support, and cancellation.
- Confirm migration and support. Establish who transfers menu and customer data, trains staff, and responds to a service issue during operating hours.
- Check hardware compatibility before purchase. A receipt printer is not universally compatible across POS systems. Confirm the exact model on the selected vendor’s current compatibility list before ordering.
What the available comparisons do—and don’t—establish
The vendor fit cues and indicative plan figures in the 2026 comparison are secondary-source claims; they may refer to a particular date or configuration and are not a consistent total-cost basis. Confirm current prices directly with each provider. A TouchBistro-produced guide from March 2023 can help explain broad POS workflow differences, but it cannot settle present-day pricing or feature availability.

Toast’s competitor-comparison page cites a 30% restaurant failure rate from a National Restaurant Association report in 2015 and compares it with a historical percentage of Toast customers still processing payments after 13 months in a 2022–2023 cohort. That is not a current independent estimate of restaurant failure rates, nor evidence that a POS caused or prevented failure. Toast’s comparison.
