The sensor records light; the camera pipeline may then combine frames and render their data into the image you see. A file’s format, metadata, or appearance alone does not universally prove its capture and processing history. For supported iPhone 18 Pro models, Apple’s opt-in Reference Image workflow offers a specific way to authenticate and compare a reference image.
What “captured” and “processed” mean
These terms describe different stages, not opposing possibilities. A conventional camera image begins with light recorded by a sensor. The phone can computationally process that sensor data to produce the final image, and an image can also be edited after capture or analyzed later by Photos.

- Sensor capture: light from the scene is recorded by the camera.
- Capture-pipeline processing: the camera software may combine multiple frames and render the result. Apple describes this as part of its default photo-capture pipeline. Its processed HEIC or JPEG output may use Smart HDR, Deep Fusion, or Night mode. Apple’s ProRAW documentation explains the relationship between rendered output and the camera pipeline.
- Later editing: a person or app may change the image after capture.
- Photos analysis: Photos uses on-device machine learning for library functions such as scene classification and photo quality analysis. That analysis does not, by itself, authenticate how an image was captured. Apple’s Photos guide describes those library features.
So “processed on-device” could refer to computational photography, a later edit, or library analysis. Determine which one is meant before drawing a conclusion from a sample.
What the file format can—and cannot—tell you
Format is a useful clue about how image data is represented, but it is not a complete record of provenance. Apple distinguishes rendered HEIC/JPEG output, ProRAW, and its newer Reference Image workflow as follows:

Apple puts the ProRAW distinction plainly: “Apple ProRAW combines the information of a standard RAW format along with iPhone image processing, which gives you more flexibility when editing the exposure, colour and white balance in your photo.” ProRAW documentation
A RAW label answers a format question, not the whole provenance question. Editing, conversion, or sharing can also change what a file contains. The cited Apple documentation describes a specific authentication workflow, not a universal way to reconstruct the history of any image export.

How to examine an iPhone camera sample
- Clarify the claim. Is the question whether a camera sensor recorded the scene, whether the camera fused or rendered sensor data, or whether someone edited the file afterward? These are separate questions.
- Check the format, but treat it as a clue. HEIC and JPEG are rendered outputs. ProRAW retains RAW information but also includes iPhone processing. Neither format alone proves that a file is untouched or establishes its entire history.
- Look for Reference information if the image was made using Apple’s supported workflow. Apple says Reference captures appear in Photos under Media Types > Reference. The reference image must be developed before it can be viewed or shared, and development requires an internet connection. Apple’s Reference Image instructions
- Compare the reference with the conventional photo. Apple says edits such as cropping, colour adjustments, or generative-AI adjustments are visible in the comparison. The minimally processed reference image may look less contrasty and saturated than the conventional photo. Apple Support
- Be cautious with detached copies. A screenshot, recompressed copy, or file missing its reference information may no longer carry the evidence described in Apple’s workflow. The cited Apple sources do not specify a universal third-party method for authenticating every derivative.
Apple Reference Image: scope, compatibility, and privacy
Apple documents Reference Image for iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. It is an opt-in, user-controlled feature and is off by default. During development, reference data and associated metadata—including a sensor signature and secure timestamps—are sent to Private Cloud Compute for authentication. Apple says the raw photograph and device information may be sent for that process, while Apple cannot access the raw photo during authentication; it also describes an on-device check when an authenticated image is viewed. This is not accurately summarized as either “everything stays on the phone” or “Apple can see the photo.” Apple’s privacy notice and support article describe the workflow.

How to enable and capture Apple ProRAW
ProRAW is a format choice for retaining more RAW-oriented information; it does not turn off every computational step. Apple says it is available on iPhone 12 Pro and later Pro models with iOS 14.3 or later. On supported devices:
- Open Settings > Camera > Formats.
- Turn on Apple ProRAW & Resolution Control.
- In Camera, select RAW before capturing.
Apple says ProRAW is unavailable with Live Photos, Portrait mode, and video. On iPhone 14 Pro and later Pro models, Apple documents 12 MP and 48 MP ProRAW options. These are compatibility details, not evidence that ProRAW is unprocessed. Apple Support: About Apple ProRAW

Can you turn off all computational photography?
The Apple documentation cited here describes formats and workflows, but does not establish a general setting that disables all computational processing across iPhone camera capture. Choosing ProRAW changes the kind of image data saved; it does not mean the camera pipeline has made no computational adjustments. If the goal is to verify a supported capture rather than minimize rendering, Apple Reference Image is a separate, model-specific authentication workflow.
