tModLoader is a separate, free Steam client that lets you install and run Terraria mods. You still need to own Terraria for PC, and you launch tModLoader instead of the vanilla game when you want to play with mods. The beginner path is straightforward: install tModLoader from Steam, launch it once, download a mod through Workshop → Download Mods, enable it in Workshop → Manage Mods, and select Reload Mods. Multiplayer works only when every participant runs tModLoader with a compatible shared mod setup.

What tModLoader is—and what it is not
tModLoader (often abbreviated TML) is an open-source, community-driven modification platform for Terraria. It provides the client and framework needed to make, distribute and play mods, from small quality-of-life changes to large content expansions. The Steam listing presents it as a free Terraria mod/DLC, but it is not a replacement for Terraria itself: ownership of the base PC game is required.

Steam installs tModLoader as a separate library entry. Your regular Terraria installation remains the vanilla game, while the tModLoader entry starts a mod-capable environment. Keeping those launches separate helps you avoid accidentally loading a modded character or world in the unmodded client.
What you need before installing
- A legitimate PC copy of Terraria. tModLoader requires ownership of Terraria; downloading tModLoader alone does not provide the base game.
- A Steam account and the Steam desktop client. The simplest beginner installation is the free tModLoader entry in Steam.
- Enough memory and storage. A tModLoader.org getting-started guide marked updated September 2025 reports 2 GB of RAM and 1 GB of free disk space as its minimums. Treat those figures as guide-reported rather than a timeless official specification.
| Platform | Guide-reported minimum | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Windows 7 SP1 or later; 2 GB RAM; 1 GB free disk space | Reported by the September 2025 tModLoader.org getting-started guide; verify current requirements before installing. |
| macOS | macOS 10.12 or later; 2 GB RAM; 1 GB free disk space | Guide-reported, not a guarantee that every current mod will run well. |
| Linux | Ubuntu 16.04 or equivalent; 2 GB RAM; 1 GB free disk space | Guide-reported; distributions and driver support can affect results. |
The requirements above describe the client, not the workload of a particular mod collection. Large content mods, visual changes and multiplayer sessions can demand more resources, so leave additional free disk space and add mods gradually.

How to install tModLoader on Steam
- Open the Steam desktop client and sign in to the account that owns Terraria.
- Use Steam search to find tModLoader. Select the separate free entry rather than the ordinary Terraria listing.
- Choose Install and select the library drive and shortcut options you prefer.
- When installation finishes, open your Steam Library and launch the tModLoader entry.
- Allow the first launch to finish creating its mod folders and configuration files. Closing the program during this initial setup can leave an incomplete configuration.
Steam Workshop support is built into the client, and tModLoader also provides an in-game mod browser. You do not have to copy mod files manually for the normal Workshop workflow.
Launching vanilla Terraria safely
Use the ordinary Terraria library entry for an unmodded session and the tModLoader entry for a modded one. Characters and worlds saved by mods may contain items or tiles that vanilla Terraria does not understand. Keep your launch choice deliberate, especially before opening an important world.

Start with one small, clearly maintained mod—or a very small group—so you can identify the cause of a problem if the game fails to load.
- Launch tModLoader from Steam.
- Open Workshop → Download Mods.
- Search by mod name, or browse and filter the available listings.
- Read the mod description before downloading. Look for its purpose, supported game or tModLoader versions, dependencies, configuration notes and multiplayer information.
- After the download completes, open Workshop → Manage Mods.
- Find the mod in the list and switch it on.
- Select Reload Mods to apply the change. tModLoader rebuilds the active mod environment and returns you to the game when the reload completes.
The download screen can sort or filter listings by popularity, recency, alphabetical order and category. Those controls help you find projects, but popularity alone does not establish compatibility with your current client. A recently updated description and a clearly documented dependency list are more useful checks.

Check dependencies before enabling
Some mods require another mod or a library to be installed and enabled first. The listing normally identifies those requirements. If a dependency is missing, the mod may remain disabled, show an error during reload or fail while a world is loading. Install required dependencies from the same Workshop workflow, enable them as directed by the author, and reload again.
Choose mods methodically
| Comparison point | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility | Supported Terraria and tModLoader versions stated in the listing | A mod built for a different version may not load or may behave unpredictably. |
| Dependencies | Required libraries or companion mods | Missing requirements commonly prevent activation. |
| Update activity | Recent maintenance notes and release information | Active maintenance gives you a clearer path when a new client version changes something. |
| Multiplayer parity | Whether the description documents multiplayer support and any limitations | Every player must be able to use a compatible shared setup. |
| Scope | Utility, quality-of-life, visual or content-expansion behavior | Starting with a small utility mod makes troubleshooting easier than starting with several major overhauls. |
Do not assume that a named mod is compatible with your current version merely because it appears in search. Read its current listing at the time you install it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsManaging an active mod list
Workshop → Manage Mods is where you turn individual mods on or off. When diagnosing a problem, change one thing at a time and use Reload Mods after each change. This preserves a useful cause-and-effect trail instead of leaving you unsure which combination introduced the failure.
Keep a short record of the mods you intentionally enabled, especially before joining a friend’s world. A shared list makes it easier to compare setups and to restore the same configuration after an update. Interface labels, available filters and version numbers can change, so the wording in your current client takes precedence over older screenshots or guides.

Can you play tModLoader multiplayer with friends?
Yes, but tModLoader is a separate multiplayer boundary. The official project README states that all friends must install TML to play together; a vanilla Terraria user cannot join a tModLoader session, and a tModLoader client cannot join a vanilla session.
In practice, each participant should:
- Install and launch tModLoader rather than the ordinary Terraria entry.
- Use the same mod set, including required dependencies.
- Use compatible versions of those mods and of tModLoader.
- Enable the mods before hosting or joining.
A mismatch can appear as a missing-mod prompt, a failed connection, a world-load error or differences in available items and tiles. If a friend cannot join, compare the active lists and versions first, then reload after correcting the difference.

Back up characters and worlds before major changes
Mods can add items, recipes, enemies, tiles and other data that a world or character may rely on. Before installing a large content mod, changing a long-running mod list or opening an important save with a new version, copy your player and world files to a separate location.
A backup is a recovery option, not a guarantee that every failure is prevented. Keep the original copy unchanged, and make a new backup after a change has loaded successfully. If you are experimenting, use a test character and world first rather than risking a primary save.

Troubleshooting common tModLoader problems
“My mod is not showing up”
- Confirm that you installed the tModLoader Steam entry and launched it, not vanilla Terraria.
- Return to Workshop → Download Mods and verify that the download completed.
- Check Workshop → Manage Mods; a downloaded mod is not necessarily enabled.
- Read the listing for dependencies, supported versions and any category or search-name variation.
- Reload mods after enabling it.
If the listing itself is unavailable, it may have been withdrawn, renamed or made temporarily unavailable. Search by the author or browse the relevant category rather than assuming the client is broken.
“The game fails after I added a mod”
- Note the newest mod or dependency you changed.
- Open Workshop → Manage Mods and disable that newest addition.
- Select Reload Mods.
- If the game loads, read the mod’s description and compatibility notes before trying again.
- Restore your backup if a world or character no longer loads correctly, then test the mod on a copy.
When several mods were added at once, disable the recent additions and re-enable them individually. This isolates the conflict without requiring you to discard the entire setup.
“A dependency or version error appears”
Read the exact requirement in the mod listing. Install the named dependency, enable it if the author requires that, and check whether the mod supports the tModLoader version currently installed. If the author documents a required load order or a known conflict, follow that note. Do not substitute an unrelated library because its name looks similar.
“I cannot join my friend”
- Verify that everyone launched tModLoader.
- Compare enabled mods, dependency mods and displayed versions.
- Disable a newly added mod on all clients if the problem began after that change.
- Reload mods on every machine before retrying the connection.
Vanilla Terraria cannot be used as a fallback client for a tModLoader host. Everyone must use the modded client for that session.

“Vanilla Terraria looks different after modding”
Check which Steam entry you launched. tModLoader and Terraria are separate library entries, so starting the ordinary Terraria entry should provide the vanilla environment. Do not open a mod-dependent save there; switch back to tModLoader for worlds and characters that require mod data.

After your first successful launch, resist the urge to download a large collection immediately. Add a utility or quality-of-life mod, play long enough to confirm that the world loads, then add the next mod. This approach gives you a known-good checkpoint and makes dependency or compatibility problems identifiable.
Before a tModLoader update or a major mod update, read the relevant Workshop descriptions and back up saves. Mod availability, interface labels and version numbers change over time; a guide that matches an older release may show a different menu or omit a new requirement.
