To loosen a stubborn small screw, first use a hand driver that fits the recess exactly, hold it straight, and turn with controlled pressure. If the bit slips, stop: repeated slipping can round the head further. For a partly damaged recess, try a grip aid; for an exposed head, use screw-extracting pliers; for a compatible small stripped screw, consider a precision extractor. Cutting a slot is a destructive last resort, especially in electronics.
How do you loosen a small screw without stripping it?
Begin with the least destructive approach. Inspect the drive recess, choose a correctly sized, undamaged bit, seat it fully, and keep the driver perpendicular to the screw. Use a hand screwdriver rather than a high-speed drill so you can feel whether the bit is catching and control the force.

Apply enough pressure to keep the bit seated, then turn smoothly. Tiny electronics screws need especially light, deliberate handling. iFixit’s advice for small fasteners is: “Think watchmaker, not tire shop.”

If the driver does not catch promptly or slips out, stop. As iFixit explains, slipping transfers force to the recess edges and can smooth them, making the next attempt more likely to slip too. Check the fit and drive shape again rather than forcing the same bit. For a screw inside a device, check the device’s service precautions before continuing.

How do you choose an extraction method?
Match the method to the damage, whether the head is recessed or exposed, the screw’s size, and how close it is to delicate parts. Prefer options that do not remove material or create debris, particularly around electronics.

What can you try if the screw recess is partly stripped?
If some edges remain, try a slightly smaller or larger driver to see whether it catches more securely. A flathead may work if it sits firmly in the damaged recess. You can also place a rubber band or thin piece of fabric between the screw and driver to improve grip.

These are low-cost attempts, not reliable fixes. Turn gently and stop if the bit slips again; pushing harder can make the screw harder to remove.
What if the screw head is exposed?
Screw-extracting pliers can grip a damaged head that protrudes far enough to hold. Turn the pliers to loosen the screw, then use a screwdriver to back it out once it has moved. If the head sits below the surface or is recessed, pliers cannot reach it.

When is a precision screw extractor appropriate?
A precision extractor is an option for a small stripped screw when the tool matches the screw’s diameter and there is enough access to use it carefully. iFixit specifies its Precision Screw Extractor Set for 1.1–2.0 mm screws and describes it as having hardened, reversible extractor tips. That is the tool’s stated compatibility range, not a guarantee that it will work on every screw in that range. Compare the screw size and access with the product specification before use.
The maker cautions that using the set requires mechanical aptitude and a careful feel. A screw that is cross-threaded, jammed, or glued can be very difficult to remove with any tool, so an extractor should not be treated as a sure fix.

Should you cut a slot in the screw?
Cutting a slot with a rotary tool is a destructive last resort: it removes material and can send sparks or conductive metal shavings into nearby parts. iFixit advises using a low power setting, wearing eye protection, and clearing metal shavings before reassembly. Its warning is direct: “Always wear safety goggles when using a rotary tool to prevent injury from debris or sparks.”
Avoid this approach near delicate electronics unless you can protect the components and control the debris. If you are inexperienced or cannot keep debris away from the device, consider professional repair rather than cutting near components.

When should you stop trying?
No method is assured when a screw is badly damaged, jammed, glued, or cross-threaded. Stop if the driver repeatedly slips, the head is getting worse, or the next method would put nearby components at risk. Choose a repair professional when the screw is in a delicate device and you cannot safely access or protect the surrounding area.
