For software development, useful time tracking means recording effort against the right task or project with enough detail to support planning, reporting, or invoicing—without asking developers to maintain fields nobody uses. Teams can log time with a timer or manually, then decide what detail, approvals, and privacy safeguards fit their workflow.
What should a software development time entry include?
Choose the fields based on what the team needs to understand or report. A time entry may include a description, task, project, tags, billable status, date, start and end times, and duration. Toggl’s documentation describes these fields and allows different levels of detail: Toggl time-entry documentation.

For example, a team that needs effort by issue might require a task and project, while a freelancer preparing client invoices may also need a clear description and billable classification. Extra fields only help when someone uses them in analysis, review, or billing.

How can developers capture time?
Use a timer
Start a timer when beginning a task and stop it when switching or finishing. This can reduce reliance on end-of-day recall, but it still depends on people starting, stopping, and assigning the timer correctly. A timer is a capture method, not proof that an entry is accurate.

Enter time manually
Manual entry works when a developer records the duration after the work or reconciles time in a timesheet. Keep the entry tied to a date and task, and establish a routine for recording it while the work is still fresh.
Use a task- or calendar-linked workflow
Some systems can connect time capture with development tools or calendars. Treat these as workflow options rather than inherently more accurate methods: the available product materials describe capabilities, not comparative accuracy results.
Should time live in an issue tracker or a separate app?
Use the system that makes it practical to associate effort with the work item and produce the reports the team needs. If developers already work in an issue tracker, integration can reduce context switching. A separate time-tracking workspace may provide additional project, client, or billing organization. In either case, check that the task and project identifiers remain clear and usable in reports.
Toggl Track with Jira
Toggl describes syncing Jira entities into Toggl, with data flowing from Jira to Toggl. That can connect tracked time with Jira work without implying that every field or workflow syncs in both directions. Review the vendor’s current integration details before relying on a particular mapping: Toggl’s Jira integration page.

Tempo for developer workflows
Tempo’s developer guide describes tracking where developers work, including VS Code or Jira, and then logging tracked time: Tempo’s developer time-tracking guide. The cited materials do not establish how its performance or price compares with alternatives.
How should a team set up a sustainable workflow?
- Decide what the log is for. Identify whether entries support project analysis, estimates versus actuals, client billing, workload review, or timesheet approval.
- Choose a capture routine. Agree whether developers will use timers, manual entries, or a supported linked workflow. Define how to handle interruptions and missed entries.
- Set the required fields. Specify the minimum useful combination of task, project, description, tags, dates or duration, and billable status. Avoid requiring detail that has no reporting or operational purpose.
- Connect work to projects and tasks. Use consistent project and task names or an integration so effort can be examined by work item rather than as an unassigned total.
- Set review and access expectations. Define who can view, correct, approve, or export entries, and explain what activity data is collected and retained.
- Review whether the process is useful. Check whether reports answer the original questions and adjust fields or cadence if they do not.
How can billable time support invoicing?
Classify client work as billable or non-billable when that distinction matters, and associate billable entries with the appropriate project or client. Reports can then help organize billable totals and invoicing workflows. Tempo’s documentation describes billable and non-billable tracking and exportable billable reports: Tempo’s billable-hours guide.

A billable flag or exported report is a recordkeeping aid, not a guarantee that the underlying time, rates, approvals, or invoice are correct. Review entries and applicable client terms before billing.

What should you compare when choosing a tool?
| Decision area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Capture | Does the workflow support timers, manual entry, task launch, calendar assistance, or desktop assistance as needed? |
| Work linkage | Can entries connect to the relevant task, issue, project, client, tags, and description? |
| Reporting | Can the team see billable and non-billable totals, estimate versus actual, or project and client reports it will use? |
| Workflow | Does it integrate with the development tools in use, support approvals and exports, and work on the devices developers need? |
| Privacy and governance | What activity data is collected, who can see it, how long is it retained, and what workplace rules apply? |
Vendor feature pages can establish what a company says its product offers; they are not independent comparisons of accuracy, privacy, or productivity. For example, Toggl markets developer and IT features including timer and manual tracking, integrations, billable rates, reporting, estimates versus actuals, workload, and approvals. Verify current availability and plan limits directly with the vendor: Toggl’s developer time-tracking page.

What privacy and governance questions belong in the decision?
Before adoption, tell employees what is recorded and why, who can access entries, and how long records are kept. Consider whether the tool records only submitted time and task details or also collects activity data beyond those entries. The reviewed product materials do not independently establish comparative privacy practices or legal requirements across jurisdictions, so evaluate the current vendor terms and applicable workplace rules for your location.
How much does Toggl Track cost?
Toggl’s project page states that its free offering supports up to three users and lists additional features on paid tiers. Because packaging can change, check the current terms on Toggl’s project time-tracking page before making a budget decision.
