monday.com includes a native Time Tracking Column for recording work sessions against items on a board. It is a good place to start when you need time tied to individual tasks. Its main caveats: session time is committed only after a timer is paused or stopped, and the column cannot be mapped by automations that create or move items to another board. For broader reporting or workflows that exceed those limits, monday.com points users to marketplace apps such as Tracket, Time Reporting Solution, and TMetric.
What monday.com time tracking does
Add a Time Tracking Column to a board to record time against its items. A person can track work in sessions, and the column accumulates total time across those sessions. The monday.com Support guide to the Time Tracking Column explains the native feature; the developer API reference describes the total duration and session history.

This is item-level tracking, so first decide what an item represents in your workflow: a task, client deliverable, support case, or another unit of work. If you need a broader project-wide view or a different reporting model, verify that the native column and your board structure can provide it before standardizing on the feature.

Set up a basic time-tracking workflow
- Open the board that contains the work you want to track.
- Add a Time Tracking Column to the board. Use it on the relevant items, and decide who is expected to record sessions.
- Agree on a simple team convention: when to start a session, when to pause it, and when to stop it. Pause or stop a session when work is interrupted or complete.
- Test the workflow with representative items. Check that people can record sessions as intended and that the resulting totals support the reporting or automation you plan to use.
One operational detail matters if you rely on automations: monday.com says active sessions are not logged in real time. The time is committed only when a session is stopped or paused, so an automation evaluating tracked time cannot act on an unfinished session. Build the pause-or-stop step into the workflow rather than assuming the running timer is already reflected in committed time.

Know the native column’s limits
Moving items between boards
The Time Tracking Column cannot be mapped when an automation creates or moves items to another board. As a result, tracked data does not transfer through those automations. If your process depends on preserving time data across boards, test that exact move with representative items and plan a different data-handling approach if needed; do not assume the destination item inherits the source column’s tracking history.
API access and timer control
The monday.com API can read, filter, and create time-tracking column data. The API reference says values cannot be updated or cleared directly through the API; timer management is handled in the monday.com interface or through automations. If you are building an integration, distinguish between retrieving or creating tracking data and controlling or editing an existing timer.

When to consider a marketplace app
If the native column does not fit the workflow, monday.com’s support documentation names Tracket, Time Reporting Solution, and TMetric as apps to investigate for advanced time tracking. That is a starting list, not a ranking or endorsement: the available documentation does not establish a side-by-side feature or price comparison among them.
Review each app’s current monday marketplace listing against the requirements that matter to your team. monday.com says listings include information about functionality, pricing, security, and permissions. Also check whether an app depends on integrations: apps that need integrations cannot run on the Basic plan, according to monday.com’s marketplace guidance.

How to choose between the column and an app
Use the native column when your main need is recording sessions against board items and its behavior fits your reporting and automation workflow. Evaluate a marketplace app when you need capabilities the native column does not provide, especially around reporting or cross-board processes. Before rolling out either option, trial the intended workflow on representative items, including a paused or stopped session and any board move or automation the team expects to use.
For multi-board or organization-wide setup, monday.com’s work-management guide notes that certified partners offer paid setup, integrations, workflow design, data migration, and team training. This may be relevant when configuring the process across teams; it is separate from choosing a time-tracking app. See monday.com’s work-management guide.
