You can track time spent on Gmail emails with a browser extension that adds a timer to Gmail or supports starting a timer from a Gmail page. Clockify and Toggl Track both document Gmail workflows. The timer is only part of the setup: use the companion time-tracking app to review and manage entries, and check what information Gmail passes into each one.
How Gmail time tracking works
Gmail does not need to be replaced or turned into a separate timesheet system. A supported browser extension connects an email view to a timer in a time-tracking service. Start the timer while handling an email, then use that service’s app to review or organize the resulting entry.

The email-related information carried into an entry depends on the integration. Do not assume that starting a timer from Gmail automatically selects a project, task, or other billing category.

- Create a Clockify account and install its Chrome or Firefox browser extension, following the Clockify Gmail time tracking instructions.
- Open an email in Gmail and use the Clockify timer button shown in the email view to start tracking.
- When you finish, stop the timer and review the entry in the Clockify web app. Clockify describes using that app to edit past entries, manage projects, analyze time, review timesheets, and export reports.
There is an important limitation to the Gmail handoff: Clockify’s help documentation says Gmail supplies the description only. Add or manage project and task details separately when your records need them; the documented Gmail integration does not establish automatic project or task assignment. Toggl Track: use its browser extension
Toggl Track lists Gmail among the integrations supported by its browser extension. Its documentation describes starting a timer from a supported page and using an item name as a suggestion for the time entry. The integrations directory classifies Google Mail (Gmail) as a browser-extension integration, not as evidence of a separately installed Gmail add-on.
See the Toggl Track browser-extension integrations documentation and the Toggl integrations directory. The documentation does not specify exactly which Gmail fields map to an entry, so check the entry before relying on its description for billing or reporting.

Check access and workplace rules before installing
A browser extension may interact with data in the pages where it works. Before installation, review the extension’s requested access and your organization’s rules for third-party apps. Google Workspace administrators can govern third-party app access to Workspace data, including through OAuth scopes; on a managed account, you may need administrator approval or a permitted alternative. Make email time entries useful
- Start the timer when you begin email work and stop it when you switch tasks, so the entry reflects the work interval you intend to record.
- Review the description and add the correct project or task details in the time-tracking app when needed.
- For billing or timesheets, check entries before submitting or exporting them; an email-derived description alone may not identify the right client or category.
