Paychex offers time-tracking options within Paychex Flex, so many businesses can collect employee hours and send them into their Paychex payroll workflow without choosing a separate tracker. The right setup depends on where employees work, how they should clock in, and which features their Paychex plan includes.
Which time tracker works with Paychex?
Start with Paychex Flex Time or Paychex Flex Time Essentials. Paychex describes Flex Time as integrated with its Flex payroll platform and says time data flows into payroll; that is the vendor’s description, not an independent measurement of processing speed or accuracy. The two offerings are distinct, and their available collection methods and features can differ. Compare the options on Paychex’s time and attendance page before selecting a plan.

Depending on the offering and account configuration, the methods and capabilities shown by Paychex include web and mobile punches, timesheets, a shared-device kiosk, time clocks, approvals, scheduling, overtime alerts, reporting, labor allocation, geolocation, and time-off tracking. Do not assume every feature is included in every subscription.

| Method | Useful for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile app | Remote, mobile, or field employees who need to punch while away from a shared workplace clock. | Confirm the employee’s and manager’s permitted app functions, the plan’s features, and whether location tracking is appropriate for your policy. |
| Web punch or timesheet | Employees who record time through a browser or enter hours on a timesheet. | Check which entry methods are available for your Paychex offering and how supervisors review or approve time. |
| Shared-device kiosk | Employees who start and end shifts at a common worksite and use a shared tablet or other compatible device. | Check the current operating-system requirements, subscription prerequisite, network access, and available verification method before choosing hardware. |
| Proximity badge clock | A fixed site where staff should clock using badges rather than individual phones. | Confirm clock availability, hardware and service costs, and the badge workflow with Paychex. |
Paychex describes its Flex mobile app as supporting employee punches and timecard review, as well as manager timecard review and approvals. Related functions may include scheduling and time-off tasks, depending on the account. Its apps page says the Flex app and Time Kiosk can support clocking in and out, logging breaks, and tracking hours, with optional GPS location tracking. See Paychex’s mobile apps page for current details.

Can a tablet be used as a Paychex time clock?
Yes. Paychex Flex Time Kiosk is designed to turn a compatible shared device into a time clock. Paychex says the kiosk requires a subscription to Paychex Flex Time or Time Essentials. Its published app requirements specify supported iOS and Android versions; those requirements can change, so check the current app requirements before buying or repurposing a tablet. The available information does not certify a particular tablet model.
Paychex describes kiosk punching with a PIN or facial verification. A shared tablet can be practical when workers report to the same location, but the employer still needs to decide how the device will be mounted, secured, connected, and managed. Verify those details and the kiosk’s current configuration requirements with Paychex.

How to choose the right setup
- Map employee work locations. A fixed worksite may suit a kiosk or badge clock; staff who work remotely or travel may need mobile punches. A workforce split across settings may require more than one collection method.
- Choose how employees should identify themselves. Compare browser entry, mobile punches, timesheets, a shared-device PIN or facial verification, and badge clocks. Consider whether employees have access to suitable personal devices and whether a shared device better fits workplace policy.
- List the workflow features you need. Decide whether supervisors need approvals, employees need schedules or time-off functions, and managers need overtime alerts, reports, labor allocation, or geolocation. Check each feature against the specific Paychex offering rather than assuming the product name guarantees it.
- Trace the hours into payroll. Confirm which time data transfers to the Paychex payroll workflow, what setup or review steps remain, and who handles exceptions. Paychex presents its own time tools as integrated with Flex; verify the precise workflow for your account.
- Calculate the complete cost. Paychex’s public product information directs businesses to request pricing or a tailored plan rather than stating one universal price. Ask about the service plan, any additional clock hardware, and implementation needs before comparing alternatives.
What about third-party time trackers?
Paychex’s integration directory lists time and attendance products including Connecteam, SwyftOps, When I Work, Mindbody, and 7shifts. A directory listing establishes that Paychex names the product in that category; it does not establish that every feature, data field, account type, or payroll workflow is supported for a particular business.

Paychex also lists Connecteam in its integration directory. Before choosing an outside service, ask both vendors to confirm supported data fields, setup steps, account eligibility, and how approved hours reach payroll. Do not assume an integration will behave like Paychex’s built-in time tools.
