A retail time clock records employees’ clock-ins, clock-outs, breaks, and shifts as timecards that managers can review and use in payroll workflows. The right setup depends on how staff work at your store: you may be able to use an existing point-of-sale (POS) terminal, or you may need a shared kiosk or another supported clock-in method. Compare timecard controls, scheduling, integrations, location and role support, and the rules you need to configure before choosing a system.
What a retail time clock records
The timecard is the central record. Square defines a timecard as a record of a set of shifts, generally associated with a business’s pay period. Its documentation says timecards can include hours, breaks, shift history, and overtime. What a system records and how managers can edit or approve it depends on the product and setup.

Managers use those records to review employees’ time and move hours into payroll workflows. A time clock may also connect time capture with schedules, making it easier to compare planned shifts with recorded ones. That connection is a product feature, not a substitute for reviewing exceptions such as missed punches.

Choose a clock-in method that fits the store
Retail systems offer different ways for staff to record time. The best fit depends on where employees start work, which roles need access, and what devices the store already supports.
#1 Best Overall
- Complete Solution - Includes HN3000 AutoAlign time clock, 100 time cards, rack, ribbon, and keys for instant tracking.
- Precise Punching - AutoAlign technology ensures accurate alignment for error-free payroll records.
- Robust Warranty - Two-year warranty with unlimited customer support (Monday–Friday) guarantees reliable performance.
- Simple Setup - Plug-and-play design with clear instructions enables tracking in minutes.
- Clear Printing - High-quality uPunch ribbons deliver legible, consistent punch punches.
- Existing POS terminal: If the POS software and plan support time tracking, staff may clock in through the register or POS app. Square documents time tracking through its POS app and Dashboard for applicable products and plans; check its U.S. timecard setup guidance and confirm availability for your account.
- Shared kiosk or tablet: A dedicated device can provide a consistent clock-in point for employees. Before buying hardware, verify the time-clock software’s supported operating system, kiosk mode, mounting needs, and network requirements. A store with a compatible POS terminal may not need another device.
- Web or mobile entry: Some providers offer browser or mobile clock-ins. Confirm that the chosen option suits employee roles and store policy, and check what controls are available for the location where staff may clock in.
- QR or touchless entry: Some products support QR-based or touchless workflows. Zebra describes such options for its Workcloud timekeeping product; confirm current functionality and device requirements with the vendor.
If a shared device is the practical choice, a tablet stand for an employee time-clock kiosk may help keep the device accessible and stable. There is no universal tablet or mount: select hardware only after checking the software’s requirements.
Compare timecards, schedules, and integrations
Ask vendors to demonstrate your actual workflow, including a missed punch and a manager’s review of a timecard. Product names and feature descriptions alone do not establish that a feature is included in your plan or works with your payroll process.

For examples of retail-focused offerings, ADP’s retail page describes payroll synchronization and integrations with leading POS systems. ADP also says that more than 29,000 retailers choose it; that is ADP’s own vendor-stated customer count, with no year stated on the page, not an independent measure of product quality. Zebra Workcloud describes timekeeping and payroll integration for its product. TCP Software’s retail materials describe scheduling and time tracking. Treat each as a starting point for questions, then verify the specific product, plan, integrations, and current capabilities directly.
Set up time tracking in an existing POS
If you already use a POS that supports employee time tracking, start by checking whether it is available in your product and plan. Square’s U.S. documentation uses the setup phrase “Set up time tracking” and describes configuring timecards through its POS app and Dashboard.

Configure rules carefully; software is not a compliance guarantee
Time-clock vendors may describe tools intended to support compliance, such as break or overtime settings. Those features do not guarantee that an employer is compliant. Employers remain responsible for configuring the system correctly and meeting the requirements that apply to their locations and workforce. Check whether rules can be configured separately by location, and seek qualified advice for legal obligations; product feature pages do not establish jurisdiction-specific requirements.
When a separate kiosk makes sense
A dedicated kiosk may be useful when employees need a shared clock-in point that is separate from a sales register, or when the existing POS does not support the desired workflow. It may be unnecessary when your store already has a supported POS terminal and the timekeeping product fits that workflow. Decide after confirming supported devices, mounting and network requirements, access controls, and the cost of any additional hardware with the vendor.
