Employees typically identify themselves with a PIN or account; some services offer optional photo or biometric checks. The resulting time entries may flow into timesheets and payroll workflows, depending on the app and subscription.
What is a time clock kiosk app?
It is timekeeping software configured on a shared device in a workplace, such as a tablet near an entrance or a computer at a service counter. Instead of each worker using a personal phone, employees take turns using the station to record the start or end of a shift and, where supported, breaks.

The device is shared; the time record should not be. Each employee identifies themselves so the system can associate a punch with the correct person. A kiosk is not automatically a biometric scanner or GPS tracker: identity checks, location controls, and data handling differ by provider.

How employees clock in from one device
- Set up the station. Install or open the provider’s kiosk app, or use its supported browser experience, on a shared device. Some services require the device to be registered or configured for kiosk use.
- Have each employee identify themselves. Depending on the service, workers may enter a personal PIN, sign in with individual credentials, or use an optional photo or biometric method.
- Record the punch. The employee selects the relevant action—such as clock in, start or end a break, or clock out. Available actions vary by app.
- Review and process time. Managers may review punches in timesheets, correct or approve entries, and use an export or integration for payroll, if their plan supports it.
What to compare before choosing a kiosk
| Decision | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Shared device | Whether the app supports iPad, Android tablets, or a shared computer/browser; check operating-system and version requirements. | The station must work with the hardware you can keep accessible at the workplace. |
| Employee identification | Whether workers use individual accounts, PINs, photos, face recognition, or fingerprints, and which methods are optional. | Identification methods differ; no method should be assumed to be available or to eliminate time fraud. |
| Offline behavior | Whether punches can be entered without internet access and synced later in the exact current app. | Offline support is product- and version-specific. Do not assume a legacy app’s behavior applies to the current one. |
| Time and payroll workflow | Whether the system records breaks, supports timesheet review, and offers payroll reports or a direct integration—and what plan includes them. | A clock-in feature alone does not establish that payroll processing is included. |
| Location and privacy | Whether location is required, when it is checked, which device supplies it, and whether collection continues after a punch. | A geofence or location check does not necessarily mean continuous tracking. |
| Subscription or license | Whether kiosk mode and the specific features you need require a particular plan or license. | Access varies by vendor and may change; confirm current terms before deployment. |

Sling by Toast
Sling documents clocking through web, mobile, or kiosk, with kiosk punches using PINs. Its support article describes break punches, timesheet review, payroll report export, and geofencing settings; kiosk use is documented as a Business subscription feature. Sling says in its Time Clock Settings support article: “Geofencing checks location only at the time of clock-in or clock-out and does not track employee movement.”
Connecteam
Connecteam describes a shared tablet kiosk where employees use individual PINs, with optional selfie photos. It says tracked hours are recorded in digital timesheets for review and payroll preparation. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent evidence of how effectively an identity method prevents misuse. See its Time Clock Kiosk for Tablet page.

Deputy
Deputy’s help center describes a unified Time Clock app for iPad and Android tablets and says it is consolidating prior kiosk and time-clock apps. The page states that offline mode remains in a discontinued legacy iPad kiosk app and is not available in the current unified app experience it describes. Because product status can change, verify the current app’s offline behavior before relying on it. See Deputy’s kiosk and time-clock app overview.

Location, privacy, and identity considerations
Ask the provider what information the kiosk collects and when. A location restriction could verify a device’s location at the moment of a punch without tracking an employee’s movements; Sling describes that behavior for its own geofencing feature. Do not generalize it to other apps.

Plan the physical station and internet connection
Place the shared tablet or computer where employees can reach it when shifts begin and end. TimeClick describes mounting an iPad or Android tablet at a job site or entryway; a mount is a practical option, not a universal system requirement. Make sure the device and its operating system meet the chosen app’s requirements.
Test the full workflow before relying on the kiosk: employee identification, shift and break punches, manager review, and the payroll export or integration you expect to use. If the worksite internet is unreliable, verify offline capture and later syncing for the exact app version and device. Some products require an active connection for punches to sync, while legacy and current apps from the same vendor may behave differently.
When a kiosk is a good fit
- Employees start or finish shifts at a shared, convenient location.
- You want time punches associated with individual workers without requiring each person to use a personal phone.
- The chosen system supports your workplace’s device, identification method, connectivity, and payroll workflow.
A kiosk may be less convenient when employees work at changing locations or need to record time away from a fixed station. In those cases, compare the provider’s mobile options and location controls rather than assuming its kiosk handles those needs.
