Type your message and tap Send. TikTok calls these messages direct messages, or DMs. If you have not already been allowed to message the person, your first message may be a request they must accept before you can continue.
Send a TikTok message
Use whichever route matches where you are in the app. Both lead to TikTok’s direct-messaging system, though the options shown can vary by account and app version.

- From Inbox: Open Inbox at the bottom of the screen, then select an existing conversation or use the chat or search controls to find the person.
- From a profile: Open the person’s profile and tap Message, if that button is available.
- Type your message and tap Send.
If the app’s labels or layout differ, look for the equivalent inbox, chat, or messaging controls.

If the person’s settings do not allow you to message them directly, TikTok may send your first contact as a message request. The recipient has to accept it before you can continue the conversation. TikTok says you can have only one request pending at a time; if the recipient deletes or ignores it, you cannot keep sending messages to them.

Recipients can review requests under Inbox → Message requests and choose to accept, delete, or report one. They can also block an account from contacting them.
Who can send and receive TikTok DMs?
TikTok makes direct messaging available to registered account holders aged 16 and older. Accounts belonging to users aged 13–15 do not have DMs. Additional teen settings, Family Pairing, local rules, and account controls can affect what appears for people aged 16–17 and other users.

Friends—people who follow the account and are followed back—and accounts a user follows can message them, subject to their settings. Other people may need to send a request. A private account can further limit requests: TikTok says potential connections and other users cannot send a request unless they follow the recipient. The recipient can also set request categories to Don’t receive.
Why can’t I see Message or send a DM?
Check these possible causes in order:
- Age eligibility: Direct messaging is not available to users under 16.
- The recipient’s request settings: They may not accept requests from your category or may have chosen Don’t receive.
- A private account: If the recipient has a private account, you may need to follow them before you can send a request.
- A block: A blocked account cannot send the recipient a message request.
- A restriction on your account: Check Account check in TikTok Studio or the Safety Center for restrictions, including limits on sending DMs.
These limits mean the profile’s Message button or a send option may not appear for every account.

Adjust message privacy and read status
Choose who can send you requests
To manage request settings, go to Profile → Menu ☰ → Settings and privacy → Privacy → Direct messages. The available choices control whether potential connections or other TikTok users can send requests.
Filter or report unwanted messages
TikTok’s direct-message privacy area includes Safe mode, keyword filtering, reporting, and blocking controls. You can ignore, delete, or report an unwanted request, or block an account you do not want contacting you. Filters can help manage messages, but they should not be treated as a guarantee that every unwanted message will be caught.

Understand read status
Read status is optional. The other person can tell you have read a message only if both of you have read status enabled. It is on by default for users aged 18 and older.
