TidyOS is a Windows 11 cleanup and customization utility, but its project page says it has been replaced by CrapFixer. Check the TidyOS releases page before downloading or following older instructions. If you are using TidyOS for compatibility or historical reasons, treat its controls as release-specific and review each change before applying it.
What TidyOS does—and what it does not promise
The TidyOS project describes a utility that changes a running Windows 11 installation. Its stated aims include reducing preinstalled apps, telemetry, and unwanted default settings. It also has a plugin engine for PowerShell scripts and native JSON plugins. It is not described as a tool for building a custom Windows installation image. See the project repository for its overview.

“Debloating” is not a single standard operation: the actual changes depend on the controls and plugins in the release you run. The reviewed project pages do not establish a measured speed increase, startup-time improvement, privacy gain, or amount of storage recovered. Use it to pursue specific cleanup goals, not on the assumption that every removal makes every PC faster.
Check whether TidyOS is still the right tool
The project’s releases page says, “This app has been replaced by the new CrapFixer. Check it out here.” It also lists TidyOS version 0.62, but the displayed release date does not establish a clear year. Because the project identifies a replacement, older TidyOS download and interface directions may no longer match the maintained project. Check the live release page and confirm the project and version before proceeding.

This guide covers how to approach TidyOS when you already have a compatible release or need it for a particular reason. It does not assume that CrapFixer has identical options or behavior.
Prepare before applying changes
Identify what you want to change
Decide which unwanted apps or settings you want to address. Read every selected tweak and plugin description in the version you are using; the repository’s general description does not establish an exact current list of controls. Leave a setting alone if you do not understand its effect or rely on the related Windows feature.

Back up important files separately
Keep an independent copy of important documents and other files before making system-level changes. A Windows restore point can help recover system state, but it is not a substitute for a separate file backup.
Know how you will recover access
Check that you can access Windows recovery options and, if device encryption or BitLocker applies, that you can retrieve the recovery key. Microsoft warns that recovery may require that key and can undo changes made after the selected point. Read Microsoft’s point-in-time restore guidance before relying on it.

Use only the controls confirmed in your release
The TidyOS repository describes the tool’s general purpose, but does not establish a current click-by-click procedure. Rather than relying on interface directions that may be stale, use the application’s own labels and documentation for the exact release you have:
- Confirm the application’s version and compare it with the project’s current release information.
- Inspect the available app, settings, and plugin options. Match each option to a change you actually want; do not assume an option exists just because an older guide mentions it.
- Review the description and effects of each selected change. Keep Windows components or defaults that support features you use.
- Apply changes individually where the interface allows it, then check that the intended apps or settings changed and that essential Windows functions still work.
- If a permission prompt appears, decide whether it makes sense for that specific tweak. The project says normal use does not require elevation, although an individual tweak may request higher permissions; that is not a reason to run every session as administrator.
If the version you have does not explain a change clearly, stop and verify it with the project rather than guessing. Options can vary by release, and the available sources do not verify the behavior of every control.

Understand Windows recovery before using it
Windows recovery options are separate from TidyOS; the project overview does not say that TidyOS automatically creates a restore point. Microsoft’s documentation distinguishes point-in-time restore, which returns the system to an earlier state, from System Restore, which targets system files and settings.
| Recovery option | What Microsoft says it restores | Retention and availability |
|---|---|---|
| Point-in-time restore | Earlier full system state, including files, applications, settings, and passwords; changes made after the selected point can be lost. | Restore points are captured locally, with an approximate default interval of 24 hours and retention of up to 72 hours. Default availability depends on Windows edition, device management, and OS-volume size. |
| System Restore | System files and settings. | Retention depends on available disk space. |
Microsoft’s point-in-time restore documentation, last updated June 23, 2026, says the feature is on by default for qualifying unmanaged Home and Pro devices, off on enterprise-managed devices until Windows 11 version 26H2, and enabled by default only on devices with an OS volume of at least 200 GB. These are Windows recovery defaults, not TidyOS requirements. Availability can differ with device configuration.
When you restore to an earlier point, later files, apps, settings, and passwords may be reverted. Recent security updates may need to be reinstalled, and a BitLocker recovery key is required when applicable. Read Microsoft’s user-facing recovery instructions before starting a restore.
Quick Recap
When to stop or roll back
- Stop before applying a tweak whose effect is unclear or that removes a function you use.
- If a Windows feature or app behaves incorrectly afterward, consult the tool’s release-specific guidance for reversing that change. The available project overview does not establish a universal rollback control.
- If you use Windows recovery, select a point from before the unwanted change only after reviewing what will be reverted and confirming access to any required recovery key.
- Check Windows Update afterward; Microsoft notes that recent security updates may need to be installed again following a restore.
