Ticket buyer protection is not a universal promise that you can get your money back whenever plans change. It may refer to a marketplace guarantee for ticket delivery and entry, the event’s cancellation or postponement policy, rights under local law, or separate optional insurance. Which remedy applies depends on where and how you bought the ticket, the event’s status, the platform’s current terms, and sometimes the event’s location.
What does a ticket buyer guarantee cover?
A marketplace guarantee is about the ticket transaction. Depending on the platform and the facts, it may address whether the ticket arrives on time, is valid for entry, and matches the listing or order. Possible remedies can include comparable or better replacement tickets, a refund, or credit. The precise remedy and eligibility conditions vary by platform, and a buyer may need to report a problem promptly and follow the platform’s claim process.

For example, AXS’s U.S. 100% Buyer Guarantee describes secure transactions, delivery before the event, tickets that are identical or comparable or better, and valid or authentic tickets; it names return of payment as the guarantee remedy. SeatGeek says covered issues may be handled case by case with comparable or better tickets, a refund, or, subject to applicable law, credit. StubHub’s FanProtect describes timely tickets, valid entry, and the same or comparable tickets, with remedies that can include comparable or better tickets, a refund, or credit when its requirements and timelines are met. Do I get a refund if my concert is canceled?
Often, a canceled event with no replacement date may qualify for a refund or credit, but the terms and process differ. AXS says a canceled event without a rescheduled date may result in a refund or future-purchase credit at its discretion, subject to jurisdictional differences. SeatGeek says a canceled event can result in a full refund or, subject to applicable law, credit at its discretion. Why the organizer matters
Ticketmaster says the event organizer determines the event-specific refund or credit options. Ticketmaster processes an approved refund after it receives the funds from the organizer, usually to the original payment method. Can I get my money back if the event is postponed?
A postponement is not necessarily treated like a cancellation. If the original ticket remains valid for the new date, platforms may not offer a refund unless the organizer authorizes one or applicable law requires it.

For your event, confirm whether the original ticket is still valid and whether the organizer has opened a refund or credit window. The event’s status and options in your order matter more than a general description of a platform policy.

Who should claim a refund for resale or transferred tickets?
Resale purchases
If you bought through a resale marketplace, start with the site that accepted your payment. A resale buyer generally needs to make the claim through that original marketplace, even if the ticket was first issued elsewhere. Transferred tickets
A person who received a transferred ticket may not be able to claim a refund directly. Ticketmaster says the original purchaser must handle an available refund or credit option, and a transferred ticket may need to be returned to that purchaser. How long does a ticket refund take?
Timing depends on the seller, payment method, and event process. AXS says automatic card refunds for canceled events are usually processed within 30 business days; box-office purchases are handled at the box office. Ticketmaster says an approved refund is usually completed within 30 days after it receives the funds from the organizer. These are the platforms’ stated estimates, not universal legal deadlines. Can fees, local law, or payment disputes affect the outcome?
Platforms differ on fees, credit options, notice requirements, and available remedies. The Congressional Research Service’s 2025 report, Tickets for Live Entertainment Events, describes variation in seller refund practices and state-law examples. Some state laws require refunds in specified circumstances, including certain cancellations or tickets that do not match the seller’s description; the rules are not a complete nationwide answer. Ticketmaster’s purchase-policy text says buyers agree not to seek a chargeback where an organizer prohibits Ticketmaster from providing a refund. That contractual statement is not a determination of whether a consumer can legally dispute a charge in a particular case. If a platform offers credit instead of cash, check eligible events, expiration, transferability, and whether a cash-refund option is available before accepting. Does ticket insurance cover a canceled event?
Optional ticket insurance is separate from a marketplace guarantee. It may address specified personal reasons for not attending under its own policy, but do not assume it expands the platform’s event-cancellation promise or covers a promoter cancellation.
