What each service does
Thumbalizr
Thumbalizr provides website screenshots and thumbnail embedding. Its home page offers free account and API-key signup. Its documented Embed API accepts a URL and uses an API key plus a token derived from the query string and secret. The API reference describes capture sizing and browser dimensions, with some controls limited by plan. See the Thumbalizr home page and API documentation.

Compare the capture and integration controls
Thumbalizr request controls
The published Embed API documents a signed request and controls for thumbnail width and format, JPEG quality, freshness via a timestamp, screen or page mode, delay, browser width and height, and browser location. The documentation says free access is limited to screen mode, watermarking, and fixed dimensions; additional options are available on paid tiers. Responses include screenshot status and failure information. Check the API documentation for exact request construction and which plan permits each option.
URL2PNG request controls
The quickstart documents a v6 image endpoint with an API key and request token. Advanced options include thumbnail width, viewport, full-page capture, a unique value to force a new screenshot, custom CSS, waiting for a page-readiness marker, language and user-agent headers, delay, and TTL. The documented default TTL is 30 days. URL2PNG says cached image loads do not use a fresh render. Consult the Quickstart Guide and Plans for implementation details and terms.

How to choose between them
- Decide whether you need a free evaluation. Thumbalizr publishes a free tier; URL2PNG says it has no free accounts.
- Estimate fresh captures, not just requests. Compare the quota and billing rules that apply to your expected volume. URL2PNG distinguishes fresh screenshots from cached image loads; confirm each vendor’s current overage and billing terms.
- Match controls to your pages. Check full-page capture, viewport dimensions, delays or readiness waits, CSS injection, language and user-agent needs, and browser location. Verify that the necessary options are included in the plan you would actually buy.
- Set freshness deliberately. Decide how often pages change, how long a capture can be reused, and how your integration requests a fresh result. URL2PNG documents a 30-day default TTL and a unique-value method to force a new screenshot; Thumbalizr documents a timestamp freshness control.
- Test failure handling and integration effort. Review signing, response status or errors, and how your application will handle failed captures. Thumbalizr documents response status and failure information; URL2PNG documents a signed endpoint.
- Run a representative trial before production. Capture your actual mix of pages, including long pages, pages with delayed content, and pages that require custom headers or styling. The published information does not provide a head-to-head performance or fidelity benchmark.
Choose Thumbalizr when its free evaluation and thumbnail workflow suit the job. Choose URL2PNG when its documented controls, cache behavior, and volume model better match your integration.
