Choose a preservation workflow if you need an archive
A screenshot is evidence of what a page looked like at a particular moment; it does not preserve all the page’s resources or make its interactions replayable. The Library of Congress describes WARC as a format for aggregating multiple digital resources and related information, including capture details, and identifies it as its preferred web-archive format. If preservation or replay is the goal, plan a separate WARC-producing web-capture workflow and document the date and scope of capture. Even a web-archive workflow cannot guarantee capture of every kind of content: the Library of Congress notes limits involving streaming media, deep-web content, and databases. The fullPage option captures the full scrollable page as if it were displayed on a very tall screen. For a visible viewport instead, omit fullPage. To isolate a component, use a locator’s screenshot method; to keep the image in memory rather than writing a file, call page.screenshot() without a path and retain the returned buffer. Use Playwright Test for visual comparisons
For regression checks, use Playwright Test’s screenshot assertion, for example await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home.png'). On first use, the test generates a reference screenshot; subsequent runs compare captures against it. The documentation says the assertion waits for two consecutive page screenshots to match before comparing with the expectation. Hover effects and environmental rendering differences can still affect results, so stabilize the page state and run baselines in the same environment as the tests. Common Playwright capture problems
- Browser executable missing: install the browser for the project with
npx playwright install chromiumand rerun the script. - The screenshot is incomplete or blank: confirm that navigation reached the expected page and that the site finished rendering the content you need. The example waits for the page’s
loadevent; applications that render later may need an app-specific readiness check before capture. - Full-page capture differs from what you see: full-page mode captures the scrollable document, not just the current viewport. Use viewport capture or an element screenshot if that is the intended artifact.
- Visual tests fail without an intentional design change: align the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode with the environment that generated the baseline; also remove transient hover or animation states where possible.
