Thumbalizr Not Working in Chrome? Diagnose Screenshot and API Errors

Find out whether a Thumbalizr screenshot issue comes from the website, API request, account limits, service behavior, or a managed Chrome extension.

If Thumbalizr will not generate or display a screenshot in Chrome, first identify how you are using it: through Thumbalizr’s website, an API or embed, or a separate Chrome extension. For API requests, check the X-Thumbalizr-Status and X-Thumbalizr-Error response headers before changing Chrome settings. A failed capture, a malformed request, a plan limit, and an extension restriction are different problems—and the available details do not point to one universal fix.

First identify where the failure happens

Thumbalizr is a hosted website screenshot and thumbnail service with a web interface and API; it is not inherently a Chrome extension. A problem in its website or API should not be treated as an extension problem unless your workflow actually uses a separate extension.

  • Thumbalizr website: Note what happens after you submit the target URL—an error, a blank result, a screenshot that is cropped, or no visible response.
  • API or embed: Inspect the HTTP response headers, especially X-Thumbalizr-Status and X-Thumbalizr-Error.
  • Separate Chrome extension: Check extension-specific errors and whether Chrome is managed by an organization; those checks do not automatically apply to Thumbalizr’s hosted service.

Read the Thumbalizr API status before changing settings

Thumbalizr documents three values for X-Thumbalizr-Status: QUEUED, OK, and FAILED. QUEUED means processing is still underway; OK means Thumbalizr reports the capture complete; FAILED means the capture failed. The X-Thumbalizr-Error header gives the reported failure reason when one is supplied. See Thumbalizr API documentation.

  • With QUEUED, allow the processing workflow to finish and check again rather than treating the request as an immediate capture failure.
  • With OK but no visible or usable image, inspect how your integration reads and displays the response, and confirm the requested output and target URL.
  • With FAILED, record the exact error text. It is the most useful clue for distinguishing a request issue from a rendering or service-side failure.

Check URL encoding, parameters, and embed tokens

Thumbalizr warns that API parameters must be encoded correctly, particularly the destination url. When a target URL is placed inside another URL’s query string, characters such as &, ?, and # can be interpreted as part of the outer request unless encoded appropriately. Use the encoding method expected by your HTTP client and confirm the request received by Thumbalizr contains the intended target URL and parameters.

For the Embed API, Thumbalizr documents a token calculated as an MD5 of the query string plus the account secret. If you alter query-string contents or generate a token from different contents, the token may no longer match. Check the documented token procedure and confirm the correct account key and secret are being used. Do not post secrets or complete credential-bearing requests publicly. The documentation does not enumerate every possible error string, so an encoding or token mismatch is a diagnostic possibility, not a guaranteed explanation for every failure.

Tell a plan limit from a failed screenshot

Thumbalizr’s current Features & Pricing page lists a free plan with 100 captures per month, a fixed 1280×1024 browser viewport, screen-size rather than full-page captures, and a watermark. These characteristics can explain a quota limit, a cropped-looking result, or a watermark; they do not by themselves explain every blank result or failed capture. Paid plans list higher monthly capture allowances and additional options, including full-page capture and larger viewport dimensions. Check the live plan page for current terms before relying on a limit or price.

Consider the service transition without assuming an outage

In a post dated 2026-04-08, Thumbalizr announced a phased move of screenshot rendering from Browshot to ScreenshotCenter. It says new accounts move first and existing accounts are transitioned in batches, while “Your existing integrations, API calls, embed codes, and settings remain unchanged.” The announcement describes faster processing and fewer errors or timeouts as goals, but it is not an incident notice and does not establish that a particular user’s failure is caused by the transition. See Thumbalizr’s migration announcement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your request began failing around a transition, preserve the response status, error header, approximate time, and whether the issue affects one target URL or many. Those observations are more useful than assuming the backend change is the cause.

Only troubleshoot Chrome policies if an extension is involved

Chrome’s enterprise policies can restrict extensions that use the debugger API, including debugger attachment or screenshot capture under managed-device restrictions. This is relevant when your workflow uses a Chrome extension with those capabilities; it is not evidence that Thumbalizr’s website or hosted API relies on that extension API. On an organization-managed device, ask the administrator whether extension and screenshot/DLP policies apply. For extension developers, Chrome’s guidance also points to checking the extension package and referenced files, communicating errors clearly, and handling network timeouts and HTTP 400/500 responses. See Chrome Extensions documentation and Chrome debugger API documentation.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is simply to capture a webpage from an application or script, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request can return an image or PDF. For example, with cURL:

Bestseller No. 1
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. It removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
