Bitcoin’s recent bounce has three identifiable demand drivers: renewed buying through U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), a corporate treasury purchase, and short sellers buying back Bitcoin as prices rose. Together, they make a plausible case for further gains—but only ETF demand can be treated as a potentially persistent allocation source. Treasury buying is discretionary, and short covering runs out once positions are closed.
1. Spot Bitcoin ETF demand returned
The strongest argument for a lasting move is renewed demand through spot Bitcoin ETFs, because allocation flows may continue beyond a brief burst of buying. StoneX Media’s Michael Boutros reported roughly $1.4 billion in Bitcoin ETF inflows across two trading sessions on September 22, 2026, and described ETF demand as the most durable of three concurrent sources. He also stressed that follow-through over subsequent weeks matters more than one large session. StoneX Media

Coinbase Institutional reported nearly $1 billion in U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF inflows on September 21, 2026—the largest session since October 2025, according to its September 25 commentary. Coinbase said Bitcoin had moved above an estimated ETF-investor break-even level of about $81,300. Its interpretation was conditional: sustained weekly inflows would help confirm that the session marked a return of the marginal buyer, rather than an isolated burst. Coinbase Institutional
The finalized daily figures available in Bitcoin Almanack’s October 2 report show why one session should not be treated as a trend: U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded a $66.2 million net inflow on September 29, a $148.7 million net outflow on September 30, and a $102.7 million net inflow on October 1, 2026. The October 2 flow data was not yet usable when that report was published. These flows show buying returned on October 1, but do not establish that ETF demand caused the price rise or that it will persist. Bitcoin Almanack

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
2. A corporate treasury purchase added another buyer
StoneX reported that one corporate treasury buyer purchased 950 BTC after several weeks without a purchase on September 22, 2026. A transaction of that size adds direct demand, but treasury buying is lumpy and discretionary: unlike broad ETF allocations, it does not arrive continuously on a schedule. StoneX Media
3. Short covering amplified the rebound
When Bitcoin rises, traders betting against it may close their positions by buying Bitcoin. StoneX says that short covering added forced buying into the move. That can accelerate a rebound, but it is finite: after bearish positions have been closed, that source of incremental demand is used up. It is an amplifier, not independent proof of durable bullish demand. StoneX Media

Bitcoin Almanack also suggested that a move through $85,000 could have forced some short sellers to buy, while noting that public price and flow data do not establish the size of that effect. Bitcoin Almanack

Bitwise Europe’s Week 40 2026 commentary says Bitcoin fell slightly more than 50% from its October 2025 peak before reaching a bottom in June 2026. It contrasts that decline with previous bear markets, which it says experienced drawdowns of at least 80%. Bitwise interprets the shallower decline as evidence of a more mature market and a broader, more varied investor base. That is the asset manager’s analysis, not a settled explanation of why the drawdown was smaller. Bitwise Europe

In a survey of 15 major institutions it interviewed, Bitwise said none reduced Bitcoin exposure during the roughly 50% decline from October 2025 to April 2026, while several added on weakness. This is a finding about that limited group of interviewees, not all institutional investors. Bitwise Europe
There was also a potentially supportive macro backdrop: Bitcoin Almanack reported that softer U.S. inflation data eased fears of another near-term rate increase alongside stronger risk markets. Those conditions coincided with the rally; the cited data cannot identify which buyers drove individual trades or show that the macro backdrop has permanently improved. Bitcoin Almanack

What could confirm or weaken the bullish case?
- More ETF inflows: Consecutive net inflows into the week ending October 2 and the following weeks would be stronger evidence of sustained demand than a single large session. Coinbase made persistent inflows a condition for treating the September 21 session as a return of the marginal buyer. The October 2 flow figures were not yet available in Bitcoin Almanack’s report.
- Holding above the ETF cohort’s estimated break-even: Coinbase’s September 25 estimate was about $81,300. It said a weekly close below that level would be defensive evidence. This is a dated analyst estimate, not a verified live support level.
- Breakout follow-through: Coinbase identified $90,000–$94,000 as an overhead supply area and said it would become more constructive on a weekly close above $91,000, the peak of the heaviest supply band in its analysis. These September 25 levels are dated analytical thresholds, not current market levels.
- Less long-term-holder selling: Coinbase reported that realized profit-taking had risen sharply. Short-term holders accounted for most profits over the broader period, but long-term holders accounted for more than half of realized profit on both September 22 and 23. A renewed increase in long-term-holder distribution would challenge the bullish view.
- Supportive macro conditions: A reversal in rate expectations or broader risk appetite could offset crypto-specific buying. The cited reporting does not quantify how much either factor contributed to the bounce.
The practical distinction between the three drivers
| Driver | Evidence reported | What it can—and cannot—show |
|---|---|---|
| Spot ETF demand | StoneX reported roughly $1.4 billion in inflows across two sessions on September 22, 2026; Bitcoin Almanack reported a $102.7 million net inflow on October 1 after an outflow the prior session. | Could signal renewed allocation demand if it persists; a few sessions do not establish a lasting trend. |
| Corporate treasury purchase | StoneX reported one buyer added 950 BTC on September 22, 2026. | Adds direct demand, but a single discretionary purchase does not establish a recurring buying schedule. |
| Short covering | StoneX described forced buying as short positions were closed; Bitcoin Almanack said the effect of a move through $85,000 was unknown from public data. | Can intensify an upswing, but is finite and does not by itself demonstrate durable demand. |
