Threads has a feature built for short-lived updates: ghost posts. They show up for a limited time and then vanish after 24 hours.
If you’ve seen posts disappear on your feed and want to create your own, this guide walks you through the exact steps on iPhone, iPad, and Android, plus what to do when the option doesn’t appear.

What Threads ghost posts are (and why they vanish after 24 hours)
A ghost post is a normal post format in Threads, but it’s configured to expire. After the expiration window, the post is removed from your profile and feeds, so it won’t linger like a standard post.
#1 Best Overall
- Bedside Speaker and Sleep Sound Machine: This compact wireless speaker combines Bluetooth audio, 16 built-in sleep sounds (white noise, brown noise, rain, ocean, and more) and multiple RGB night light modes in one rechargeable device. Stream music while the light pulses in time with your audio, or switch to sleep mode and drift off to the sound you picked. A practical gift for teens and adults upgrading a bedroom setup.
- One Button, Your AI, Instantly: The BRS-180 has a dedicated AI button on top. Press it once and it wakes Google Assistant, Siri, or whichever assistant lives on your paired device. Ask it anything, play music, set a reminder, check the weather, or control your smart home, all from across the room without picking up your phone.
- Pairs in Seconds and Stays Connected: Bluetooth connects to any iOS or Android phone, tablet, or laptop with no app and no account required. Once paired, the 12-hour LED clock display syncs the correct time on its own. Three display settings keep you in control: full brightness, dimmed, or completely off for total darkness. A memory function saves your last volume, sleep sound, and light settings automatically.
- Built for the Nightstand, Night After Night: The soft fabric-wrapped enclosure sits on a nightstand, dresser, or shelf without looking like a gadget. Plug it in over USB-C and it runs continuously, or use the built-in rechargeable battery for up to 6 hours of wireless playback. Either way it is ready when you are. Available in White, Black, and Green.
- 16 Sleep Sounds, Fully Customizable: Choose from 16 built-in sleep sounds that play straight from the speaker with no phone, no app, and no subscription. Set a 15, 30, or 60-minute sleep timer and the sound fades out by itself. Want a different library? Connect it to any PC with the included USB-C cable and swap out every sound stored on the device.
The feature is designed for time-bounded sharing—think quick reactions, “only today” thoughts, or temporary announcements—without the long-tail of a permanent post.
What you need before you can create a ghost post
You don’t need special hardware, but you do need the Threads feature availability and the right app version.
- Latest Threads app: Update Threads in the App Store (iPhone/iPad) or Google Play (Android) so the ghost-post option is present.
- Active Instagram login: Threads accounts are tied to your Instagram sign-in. If you’re not signed in or your session is stale, features may not load.
- Feature rollout: Not every account gets new features at the same time. If your friend has it, you might still be waiting on the rollout.
Create a ghost post on iPhone and iPad
Use these steps in the Threads mobile app on iPhone or iPad. Labels can vary slightly depending on your app version, but the workflow stays the same.
- Open Threads.
- Tap the Compose area to start a new post (the pen icon or the “Write something” field).
- Look for an expiration or ghost post control near the posting options (often in the post composer or under advanced options).
- Select Ghost post.
- Write your text, add any media if your account has that option available, then tap Post.
If you see an on-screen hint like “disappears in 24 hours,” you’re in the right mode.
Create a ghost post on Android
Android uses the same concept: start a composer, switch the mode to ghost, then publish.
- Open the Threads app.
- Tap the Compose button to create a new post.
- Find the ghost post or expiration setting in the composer controls.
- Toggle/select Ghost post so it’s set to disappear after 24 hours.
- Enter your text (and attach media if supported) and tap Post.
How to verify your post is set to disappear
Don’t guess. Confirm the setting before you publish.

- On the composer: Look for a ghost-post indicator and a “24 hours” style countdown or expiration label.
- After posting: Check that the post appears normally right after you hit Post, then monitor later to confirm it disappears after the expiry window.
- Mode persistence: Some apps remember your last chosen mode; others reset to default. Re-check each time if your option toggles back.
Privacy, visibility, and who can see a ghost post
Ghost posts behave like other Threads posts in terms of audience, then they behave differently in terms of lifetime.
- Visibility depends on your account settings: If your Threads account is public, ghost posts can appear in more places. If it’s private, they’re constrained to approved followers (subject to platform rules).
- Expires for everyone: Once the 24-hour window ends, the post is removed, not just hidden from you or your profile view.
- Interactions can still happen while active: Likes, replies, and repost-like engagement (where supported) can occur during the live period.
Timer behavior: when the 24 hours actually starts
In practice, the 24-hour countdown starts when the post goes live—not when you start composing.
Edge case: if you draft and only publish later, the expiry should be based on the publish timestamp. Don’t assume the “time you started writing” controls anything.
Edit, delete, or recover: what you can and can’t do
Ghost posts are designed to expire automatically, and that limits what you can do after publishing.
- Editing after posting: Depending on Threads’ current rules, editing a ghost post may or may not be allowed. If edits are allowed, they generally affect content, not the expiry mechanism.
- Deleting early: If you delete a ghost post, it should disappear immediately rather than waiting for the 24-hour timer.
- Recovering after expiry: Once the post expires, it’s not meant to be recoverable as a live post. You can’t “undo” the expiration.
Common reasons ghost posts disappear early (troubleshooting)
If your ghost post seems to vanish sooner than expected, check the common failure points below. Ghost-post behavior should be consistent, but app/session issues and feature rollouts can make symptoms confusing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe expiration option wasn’t actually selected
Sometimes the composer defaults back to a regular post mode. Double-check the composer indicator before you tap Post.

You switched accounts or logged out mid-session
If you post while your session is unstable (for example, you change Instagram accounts), Threads can behave unpredictably. Sign out and back in, then try again.
The app is out of date
If you’re on an older Threads version, the ghost-post control may be missing or behave inconsistently. Update Threads and verify the option is available again.
Network instability during publish
If the upload hangs or fails and retries, the post’s final “published state” may not match what you saw in the composer. If you suspect this happened, look for a status indicator and confirm whether the post is marked as ghost.

Some accounts may get partial capabilities. If the option exists but doesn’t behave as documented for your account, it can be a rollout mismatch. Updating the app and waiting a few days often fixes it as the rollout completes.
Ghost posts vs Stories vs regular posts
Threads offers multiple “short-lived” and “permanent” sharing modes. Choosing the right one depends on how you want the content to live.
| Format | Lifetime | Best for | Where it shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ghost post | ~24 hours | Temporary text/media updates | Threads feed/profile while active; removed after expiry |
| Story (if you use it) | Typically 24 hours (varies by product settings) | More “moment” oriented content | Story surfaces while active; then expires |
| Regular post | Permanent until you delete | Long-term announcements or evergreen content | Threads feed/profile; stays unless removed |
Best practices to make ghost posts work for you
Ghost posts are at their best when you treat them like a scheduled “today-only” message rather than a full archive.

- Write with an expiry mindset: Avoid promises or instructions you’d want to reference weeks later.
- Post key context early: Because replies and discovery windows are limited, lead with the essentials.
- Consider timing: If you’re trying to reach people in a specific timezone, post close to that window.
- Keep drafts if it matters: If your ghost post contains details you may need later, copy the text into Notes before publishing.
FAQs about Threads ghost posts
I don’t see the ghost post option in the composer
Update Threads, then restart the app. If it still isn’t there, your account may not have the feature rollout yet. Try posting from another trusted device/account session (or wait a day) to confirm it’s not a temporary UI issue.
Do ghost posts work from a computer browser?
Ghost posts are typically managed inside the Threads mobile app composer. If the feature isn’t present in the browser UI you’re using, use your iPhone/iPad or Android app to publish.
Will a ghost post disappear from replies and conversations?
When the parent post expires, it’s removed from its normal surfaces. Replies or conversation threads may still show depending on how Threads handles expired content, but the post itself should no longer be available after expiry.
Can people screenshot a ghost post before it disappears?
No product setting can prevent screenshots. Ghost posts are about removing the original post after 24 hours, not about stopping copies.
Does the 24-hour timer start when I hit Post or when I start writing?
It should start when the post is published. Drafting time isn’t normally counted toward the 24-hour window.

Bottom Line
Threads ghost posts are a simple way to share something that lasts for about 24 hours, then disappears automatically. The key is selecting the ghost/expiration mode in the composer before you publish.
If you don’t see the option, update Threads and double-check you’re logged in correctly—feature rollout timing is the most common reason the control is missing.
