How to Enable Always on Top in Zoom [Complete Guide 2024]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Zoom can keep its video window pinned above other apps via an Always on Top option. That’s useful when you’re presenting, monitoring a meeting while working in another program, or taking calls alongside tasks you can’t interrupt.

This guide walks you through enabling Always on Top in the Zoom desktop client for both Windows and macOS, plus fixes for the most common “it’s missing” and “it won’t stay on top” problems you’ll run into in 2024.

What Always on Top in Zoom Does (and When You Need It)

Always on Top forces Zoom’s floating meeting window to remain above other windows until you disable the setting. Depending on your OS, other apps may still temporarily cover it if they display full-screen content or system-level overlays.

Use Always on Top when you want Zoom visible while you type in WordPress, check dashboards in a browser, or reference documents. It’s especially handy for training sessions, live support, and hybrid meetings where you’re juggling multiple screens.

  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
  • Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
  • Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
  • Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works

Prerequisites Before You Start

  • Use the Zoom desktop client: Always on Top is typically available on the desktop app. If you’re using the browser, the option may not exist.
  • Update Zoom: Features can change across releases. If you haven’t updated recently, check for updates in the Zoom client (or install the latest version from Zoom’s website) before troubleshooting.
  • Know which window you’re pinning: Some versions pin the active meeting window; others pin the video tile/floating window depending on how Zoom renders your view.

Enable Always on Top on Windows (Zoom Desktop Client)

Follow this path while you’re in a meeting (or after starting one). The menu labels can vary slightly across Zoom releases, but the flow is consistent.

  1. Open the Zoom desktop app.
  2. Join or start a meeting.
  3. In the Zoom window, look for the View menu or a floating meeting toolbar.
  4. Select Always on Top.
  5. Confirm it’s enabled (you’ll usually see a checkmark or the option toggles to an on state).

If you don’t immediately see the toggle, hover your mouse over the meeting window to reveal controls. Some Windows layouts hide the toolbar until you move your cursor.

Enable Always on Top on macOS (Zoom Desktop Client)

On macOS, Always on Top is usually controlled from the meeting window’s toolbar/menu. Again, labels can shift slightly by Zoom version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Launch the Zoom desktop app on your Mac.
  2. Join or start a meeting.
  3. Hover over the Zoom meeting window to reveal on-screen controls.
  4. Open the View menu (or the meeting toolbar options).
  5. Click Always on Top to enable it.
  6. Verify it stays on (usually indicated by a checkmark).

On macOS, system behaviors like full-screen apps can still temporarily cover pinned windows. That’s normal OS-level behavior, not a Zoom bug.

If You Don’t See the Option: Common Causes

Not every setup exposes Always on Top. Here are the most common reasons you’ll search for it and find nothing.

You’re using Zoom in the browser

The Always on Top toggle is primarily a desktop-client feature. If you joined via a browser or link that doesn’t launch the desktop app, you may not see the option.

You’re on an older Zoom version

Zoom’s UI changes over time. If you’re on an outdated build, the option may be missing or moved. Update Zoom and try the toggle again inside an active meeting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You’re not in the correct view/window

Depending on your layout (shared screen, gallery view, or a floating window), Zoom may show fewer controls. Try switching views (for example, gallery vs speaker) and re-check the View menu.

Your admin policies or account settings restrict UI features

On managed accounts, some settings can be restricted. If your organization controls Zoom through admin policies, ask your IT admin if Always on Top is disabled for your account.

Window focus is interfering with the “pinned” behavior

Sometimes Zoom is “on top” but another window takes precedence because it’s full-screen, always-on-top itself, or uses a system overlay. Test by switching to a non-full-screen app like a text editor.

Troubleshooting When It Still Won’t Stay on Top

If you enable the toggle and Zoom still moves behind other windows, work through these checks in order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1) Make sure you enabled it inside the active meeting

Some settings apply to a meeting session, not your global Zoom state. Disable and re-enable the toggle while the meeting is running.

2) Restart Zoom (not just the meeting)

Close Zoom completely, relaunch it, and then rejoin the meeting. On both Windows and macOS, this can reset window-state issues.

3) Test with a plain app (not full-screen)

Check behavior against apps like File Explorer, Finder, or a standard desktop window. If Always on Top works there but fails on full-screen apps, it’s OS behavior rather than a Zoom issue.

4) Disable display scaling quirks and overlays

On Windows, overlays from screen recorders, GPU utilities, or remote desktop tools can affect z-order (which window is on top). Temporarily close those apps and retest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5) Check for Zoom updates again

Some window-behavior issues are fixed in specific releases. Updating to the newest Zoom version available to your environment is often the fastest resolution.

6) Repair or reinstall the Zoom client

If the option is present but unreliable, a reinstall can fix corrupted settings. On Windows, uninstall from Settings (or Control Panel) and install the latest Zoom desktop client from the official site.

Workarounds When Always on Top Is Unavailable

If your Zoom version or environment doesn’t expose the setting, these alternatives can still help you keep Zoom visible.

Use picture-in-picture (PiP) style behavior (if available)

Some Zoom layouts support a floating video or PiP-like experience. If your client offers a “floating” meeting view, use it to keep the video visible while you work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pin Zoom to a dedicated workspace

On macOS, use Spaces (Mission Control) to keep Zoom on a specific desktop and avoid losing it behind other apps. On Windows, use virtual desktops (Task View) to separate your Zoom workflow.

Turn off full-screen for other apps

If your workflow relies on Always on Top, avoid full-screen apps that override window layering. Use windowed mode for browsers and players where possible.

Arrange windows manually

Resize Zoom and position it so it remains visible as you switch tasks. For dual-monitor setups, place Zoom on a monitor where it won’t overlap the apps you need most.

Best Practices for a Reliable Always-on-Top Setup

  • Enable it after you join: Some UI elements load only once you’re in the meeting.
  • Keep Zoom’s window unmaximized: Full-screen or maximized states sometimes change z-order behavior on certain setups.
  • Watch for share-screen effects: Screen sharing can change Zoom’s layout. If the pinned state stops, toggle Always on Top again after starting or stopping share.
  • Verify your display mode: If you’re using presentation mode, remote desktop, or mixed DPI scaling, expect edge cases.

FAQ: Always on Top in Zoom (2024)

Does Always on Top work in Zoom Web (browser)?

Usually not. The Always on Top control is most reliably available in the Zoom desktop client. If you joined through a browser, try opening the meeting in the desktop app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I keep only my video pinned, not the whole meeting window?

Depending on your Zoom version and view mode, you may be able to keep a specific floating video area visible. If you don’t see that behavior, the setting typically pins the main meeting window rather than individual tiles.

Why is Always on Top disabled even though I’m seeing the option?

Common causes include an older Zoom build, being in a layout that hides the controls, or OS/window layering (like full-screen apps). Try toggling it again after you start video and after any screen-sharing changes.

Will Always on Top stay enabled permanently?

In many cases, it applies per session or per window state. If it resets after leaving and rejoining, simply re-enable it when you’re back in the meeting.

Does it work with multiple monitors?

Often, yes. If you notice it “falls behind” when you move windows between monitors, re-toggle Always on Top after moving the Zoom window to the target display.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Is Always on Top available on all Zoom plans?

Availability can depend on your client version and any admin policies. If you’re on a managed account and the option is missing, your organization may have restricted it.

Bottom Line

Always on Top in Zoom is a practical way to keep your meeting visible while you multitask—especially during presentations and support calls. On Windows and macOS, enable it from the meeting window controls (commonly under View) while you’re in an active meeting.

If the option isn’t there or it won’t stay pinned, update Zoom, confirm you’re using the desktop client, and test against full-screen apps and overlays. Those steps resolve most 2024 cases quickly.
