The bars on a RYOBI battery are a fuel-gauge estimate of remaining charge and runtime—not a precise percentage readout or a promise of how many minutes are left. Use them to judge whether a job is likely to need a recharge, not to calculate an exact finish time.
What the bars actually tell you
RYOBI describes the onboard LED gauge on its PBP002 18V ONE+ 1.5Ah battery and PBP005 18V ONE+ 4Ah battery as a way to monitor remaining runtime. The PBP002 manual instructs users to press the charge-level indicator button to display the amount of charge left. In practical terms, the bars give you a rough indication of the battery’s remaining charge and expected runtime.

They do not come with a manufacturer-provided formula that converts each bar into a fixed percentage or number of minutes. A reading is useful as a guide, but it is not a precise measurement of how long the battery will keep a tool running.

Runtime depends on the work being done and how demanding it is. The gauge monitors remaining runtime; it does not account for your next cut, fastening job, or other task as a fixed amount of work. So the same displayed bar count should not be treated as a universal runtime or work allowance.

When deciding whether a charge is likely to be enough, consider the job’s demands and treat the indicator as an estimate. If the work cannot be interrupted, a fuller battery or a charged spare is a safer plan than relying on a predicted number of minutes per bar.
How to check the charge
- Remove the battery from the tool or make sure the tool is off.
- Press the battery’s charge-level indicator button.
- Use the displayed bars as an estimate of remaining charge, rather than a percentage or timed countdown.
- For exact meanings of the bands shown, consult the manual for the model printed on your battery.
Why the exact bar pattern may differ
The retrieved PBP002 manual text shows charge-status bands, but that does not establish one universal band-to-percentage map for every RYOBI battery. Battery models and manual revisions can differ, so avoid applying a chart from another pack as if it were definitive. The model-specific manual is the right reference for the gauge on your battery.

What to do if the gauge flashes or behaves oddly
A flashing display should not be diagnosed from an unverified internet code chart. The exact meanings are not established across models here. Check the manual matching your battery’s model label, or contact RYOBI support for guidance.

Check that a replacement matches the tool’s battery platform and that the charger is compatible. RYOBI identifies the PBP002 as compatible with its 18V ONE+ tools and 18V ONE+ chargers; capacity is also worth considering in light of runtime needs and added tool weight. Do not replace a battery simply because the bars were mistaken for a precise timer.
