Its hand-built glass shell turns the familiar car interior into a small, moving room.
What is the Stained Glass Driverless Sleeper Car?
Yanko Design’s 2 October 2026 account describes the concept as Wilcox’s vision of a car for an imagined 2059. Instead of designing around a driver’s seat and controls, it treats the vehicle as a space for a passenger to use while travelling. Wilcox’s version is a one-person sleeping space; the broader idea allows different interiors to be built on a standardized chassis containing the motor and automated navigation technology. Yanko Design’s report is the source for these project details.

The concept’s future setting includes a fictional claim that the Digital M1 motorway has gone through 2058 without a collision because only autonomous vehicles are allowed. That is part of the imagined scenario, not a real safety record, a forecast, or evidence about how safe autonomous driving is today. The associated suggestion that safety equipment could become less important is a design premise, not current driving guidance.
How was the glass body made?
According to Yanko Design, Wilcox had no previous glass-working experience before taking a five-day workshop with glass artist Lynette Wrigley. He then spent six weeks cutting individual glass pieces by hand and soldering them onto a frame using the copper foil technique, with assistance from recent graduate Massimo Cappella.

Middlesex University’s product design department helped develop the chassis base and wooden support frame. The structure was later moved to Lead and Light, a stained-glass workshop in Camden, London. The shell opens upward to let the passenger in, and photographs of the prototype show the glass illuminated. Wilcox’s inspiration, the article says, followed a visit to Durham Cathedral and its stained-glass windows.
Why does the prototype reference the Mini?
The project was presented in connection with the Dezeen and MINI Frontiers exhibition during the London Design Festival, with support from MINI, according to the article. Wilcox’s imagined date of 2059 also nods to the original Mini, introduced in 1959. The prototype uses classic Mini tires beneath its glass body and a traditional Mini boot handle to lift the hydraulically assisted shell. These are design references on this concept vehicle, not specifications for a road-going car.

What is Taxirobot?
Taxirobot is a separate imagined vehicle-ordering service described in the same Yanko Design article, not a current booking product identified by the source. In its 2059 scenario, a passenger could choose a vehicle by group size, select an interior—such as a restaurant, office, jacuzzi or bed—and choose an exterior. The options described include a wooden cabin, a retro 2015 car and Wilcox’s stained-glass design.
What the concept does—and does not—show
The sleeper car is useful as a design provocation: if a vehicle no longer needs to be organized around someone driving it, its cabin might be shaped for another activity. Wilcox’s bed-in-a-car makes that shift tangible, while the modular-chassis idea imagines other temporary spaces. But the article presents a speculative prototype and future scenario, not evidence that such vehicles are technically ready, commercially available or safe for passengers to sleep in during real journeys.
