A giant DIY audio spectrum visualizer built by Reddit user LxGNED turns music into a physical, color-lit display: 14 frequency bands, each with 20 illuminated acrylic pixels. Hackster News reports that the build cost $1,000, with most of that spending going toward custom acrylic blocks.

How the 14-band visualizer works

The display represents audio energy across 14 frequency bands. Each band has 20 vertical pixels that rise with amplitude, giving the build 280 pixels for the spectrum itself. The result makes changes in bass, midrange and treble visible while music plays, but it is a broad overview rather than a tool for identifying individual notes.

Hackster News describes the displayed range as approximately 20 Hz to 20 kHz, the approximate range of human hearing. Dividing that span across 14 bands gives roughly 1.5 kHz per band, as Cameron Coward notes in the article. Because each band covers such a wide frequency range, the visualizer can help show overall spectral balance or an equalizer adjustment, not fine-grained pitch information.

What hardware creates the display?

Custom laser-cut transparent acrylic blocks form the visible pixels. Individually addressable WS2812B RGB LEDs edge-light those blocks, while an Arduino board controls the lighting. The source counts 280 LEDs for the spectrum bands and another 16 for the logo, making 296 LEDs in total.

A DMS-308 V2 spectrum analyzer board monitors the audio through an RCA input. The reported controls include color speed, peak pause, peak delay, delay and brightness. The project also offers 30 preset color schemes.

Why the project cost $1,000

LxGNED’s reported $1,000 project cost was driven mainly by the custom acrylic blocks, according to Hackster News. That figure describes this particular build; it is not a standard parts price or a complete reproducible budget. The article does not provide a full bill of materials, exact Arduino model, power design, dimensions, firmware or acrylic measurements, so another builder cannot use the reported total as a precise build estimate.

What to know before building a similar visualizer

This is a dedicated physical display, rather than a software visualizer built into a music player. Its appeal comes from the large, tangible light blocks and the clear bass-to-treble pattern. The same choices also make it a more involved fabrication project than a basic LED-strip display.

  • Frequency and height: Fourteen bands provide broad frequency coverage; 20 pixels per band provide vertical amplitude detail.
  • Lighting: The design uses individually addressable WS2812B RGB LEDs. Confirm the strip or LED format, density, voltage and current requirements for your own layout.
  • Audio input: This project uses an RCA input and a DMS-308 V2 analyzer board. Confirm that a compatible board is available before designing around it.
  • Optics and fabrication: The custom acrylic blocks are central to the look and a major cost driver. The source does not specify their dimensions or provide cutting files.
  • Control and effects: An Arduino handles the LEDs, while the analyzer board provides the documented adjustments and color presets. Exact firmware and controller model are not stated.

For a comparison with other audio visualizer builds, look beyond the number of LEDs: compare frequency-band count, vertical resolution, audio-input method, controller flexibility, optical construction, peak behavior, fabrication cost and how easily replacement parts can be sourced.
