Yes. LastPass said an employee received WhatsApp calls, texts and at least one voicemail featuring an audio deepfake impersonating the company’s CEO. The employee ignored the messages and alerted security. LastPass said the attempt failed and had no impact on the company.
What happened in the LastPass voice-cloning attempt?
In an account published on April 10, 2024, LastPass said the contact attempt happened earlier that day. An employee received a series of calls and texts on WhatsApp, along with at least one voicemail. The audio impersonated LastPass CEO Karim Toubba.

The employee did not follow the messages’ instructions. Instead, they recognized that the contact was outside normal business channels and reported it to the internal security team. LastPass said the team mitigated the attempt and shared awareness of the tactic. LastPass’s incident account does not describe the specific request the impersonator made.
Was LastPass hacked through a fake CEO call?
No successful breach or company impact was reported. LastPass said, “To be clear, there was no impact to our company.” The account describes an unsuccessful impersonation attempt, not an attacker gaining access to LastPass systems or accounts. It does not identify the attacker, establish a motive, or report a financial loss.

How did the attempted scam work?
The attempt used an audio deepfake—AI-generated audio intended to make a person appear to say something they did not. The impersonator combined that voice with contact through WhatsApp, a channel outside the employee’s normal business communications, and what LastPass described as forced urgency. Those cues are relevant even when a caller sounds familiar: a convincing voice is not proof of identity or authorization.
LastPass warned that executive-impersonation fraud is not limited to sophisticated nation-state actors and that openly available tools make deepfake creation easier. The company did not publish a statistic measuring how common these attacks are.

How can companies respond to an AI voice impersonation?
Use a verification process that does not depend on the suspicious call, message, or voicemail itself. A familiar voice, a senior job title, or an urgent request should not override normal approval procedures.

- Verify through an approved channel. Contact the purported executive using established internal communications or a known, independently verified contact method—not a number or link supplied in the unexpected message.
- Pause when the request is unusual or urgent. Treat pressure to act quickly, an unexpected contact method, or a request outside normal procedures as social-engineering warning signs.
- Follow ordinary approval controls. Do not bypass required checks because a request appears to come from leadership. Where an action requires approval, verify and record it through the company’s normal process.
- Report the attempt promptly. Send suspicious calls, texts, and voicemails to the internal security team so it can assess the incident and warn others. Share relevant indicators with trusted intelligence partners where appropriate.
LastPass’s central lesson was to verify potentially suspicious contacts from people claiming to represent the company through established, approved internal communications channels. The incident account does not evaluate specific products or vendors as defenses.
