Switching from Windows 11 to Linux Mint means changing operating systems, not just giving Windows a new look. Mint’s Cinnamon desktop has a familiar layout for many Windows users, but apps, device support, software installation, updates, and troubleshooting work differently. Before replacing Windows, check that your essential programs and hardware work with the specific Mint release you plan to use.
What changes in everyday use?
Linux Mint is a Linux distribution with its own desktop, software sources, settings, and support model. Cinnamon is its most popular desktop edition; MATE and Xfce are other interface choices. These are desktop options, not guarantees of better performance on a particular computer. Linux Mint’s FAQ describes the editions and their requirements.

Programs made for Windows do not automatically become Linux programs because the desktop looks familiar. For each application you depend on, check whether its maker offers a Linux version or whether a suitable alternative supports your actual workflow. If you need a particular Windows-only program, do not assume it will work on Mint.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Software installation and system maintenance also follow Linux conventions rather than Windows ones. Expect to learn Mint’s software tools and settings, and consult the release notes when updating or troubleshooting. A change of desktop appearance does not remove the need to check compatibility or learn the new system.

How Windows 11 and Linux Mint differ
| What matters | Windows 11 | Linux Mint |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware eligibility | Microsoft’s requirements include TPM 2.0 and UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability. Windows 11 Home also requires an internet connection and Microsoft account to complete first-use setup, according to Microsoft’s requirements page. | Mint publishes different minimum requirements, including a 64-bit CPU, 2 GB of RAM, 20 GB of disk space, and a 1024×768 display. These are minimums, not a performance recommendation. Mint’s FAQ lists them. |
| Apps, games, and peripherals | Check the Windows version and device support for the exact apps, games, printers, scanners, webcams, and other hardware you use. | Check the specific Linux version or alternative for each app, and verify support for your games and devices on your exact machine. Support varies; a familiar interface does not establish compatibility. |
| Desktop | Windows 11 uses its Windows desktop environment. | Choose among Mint’s Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce editions. Cinnamon is the most popular; the editions are interface options, not guaranteed speed upgrades. Mint’s edition guide describes them. |
| Release support | Check Microsoft’s current support information for the Windows version you use. | Mint says its LTS releases receive five years of support. Its releases page lists Linux Mint 22.3 (Zena) as supported until April 2029; check the page for current status before installing. Mint’s FAQ and releases page. |
Hardware requirements are not a head-to-head performance test. Mint’s published minimums do not predict how well a particular computer will run it, and they do not establish that a component has a working driver. Test your own machine and workload.
What to verify before switching
Make a short list of the tasks you cannot afford to lose, then check each one rather than relying on broad claims that Linux is compatible.

Test Mint without replacing Windows
Mint’s official installation materials explain how to create bootable media and start a live session. A live session lets you try basic operation before installing, so you can check whether the desktop starts and whether key devices work. It is a useful first test, not proof that every component or workload will work after installation.
- Back up important files. Keep a separate copy before changing partitions or installing an operating system.
- Get the current Mint installation instructions. Follow the official Linux Mint installation guide for the release you plan to use.
- Create bootable media and start the live session. Use the guide’s steps for preparing the media and starting Mint on your computer. Starting the live session does not itself replace Windows.
- Try your must-have tasks and devices. Check the specific apps or alternatives, hardware, connectivity, and files you identified. Do not treat a successful desktop startup as a full compatibility test.
Should you dual boot or replace Windows?
Dual booting keeps Windows available as another operating system to start, which can help when a required workflow is not ready to move. It involves partitioning and boot configuration, so it is not risk-free. Mint’s multiboot guidance says it detects other operating systems and recommends installing Windows before Mint for a dual-boot setup. Back up your files and follow the current official instructions before changing partitions. See Mint’s multiboot guide.
