Error 0x80070490 does not point to one universal Windows 11 Home problem. Microsoft labels it ERROR_NOT_FOUND and documents it in a specific Windows Update driver-installation case; the same code shown by Microsoft Store, Xbox, or another installer can follow a different failure path. Start by identifying which app or screen displayed it, then use the matching steps below.

First, identify where the error appears

Write down the name of the app, update, or installer that failed and the point at which the code appeared. If Windows Update is involved, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and note the failed update or KB number. Microsoft recommends checking Update history to identify the specific error associated with a failed update.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

  1. On Windows 11, open the Get Help app and run the automated Windows Update troubleshooter.
  2. If the issue remains, go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run.
  3. Restart the PC when troubleshooting is complete, then check for updates again and install any available updates.

These are Microsoft’s recommended starting points for Windows Update problems. Windows Update Troubleshooter and Troubleshoot problems updating Windows.

Check basic update conditions

  • Confirm the PC has a working internet connection.
  • Make sure you are using an account with administrator access if the update requires it.
  • Restart Windows and try Windows Update again.
  • Back up personal files before attempting advanced troubleshooting.

Microsoft’s Windows Update guidance recommends these checks before moving on to more involved repair steps. Its Windows installation-error guide can help identify the specific update or setup code, but it does not list 0x80070490 among the Windows 11 errors shown there. Use the registry remedy only for the documented driver case

Microsoft’s Windows Client reference describes 0x80070490 during a particular driver installation failure: driver-operation details, such as architecture data, are missing. Its mitigation involves adding a missing Arch value under a specific DriverOperations registry location, using the relevant Identity value. This is an advanced, case-specific registry change—not a general fix for Windows Update or app downloads.

If Microsoft Store shows 0x80070490

Work through Store’s general download checks

  1. Sign in to Microsoft Store with the Microsoft account that should have access to the app.
  2. Close Store, reopen it, and try the download again.
  3. Install available Windows updates and restart if Windows requests it.
  4. In Store, open Library > Get updates and update the Store apps.
  5. Reset the Store cache: open Start, type wsreset.exe, and run the command. Wait for Store to reopen, then retry.
  6. If the app is already installed, use Windows’ app settings to repair or reset it. If needed, reinstall it from Library.

Microsoft recommends these general steps for Store app problems; they are not a confirmed, code-specific cure for every 0x80070490 Store failure. See Fix problems with apps from Microsoft Store and Microsoft Store app download troubleshooting (Microsoft Learn, updated February 12, 2026).

Check availability and account restrictions

If the basic steps do not help, check whether the app is available in your region, whether it is compatible with the PC, and whether family settings restrict access. Also verify that Store is using the correct Microsoft account and that the PC is authorized for the app. On a managed network, firewall or proxy rules can block Store downloads; Microsoft’s technical guidance notes that Store downloads can depend on access to Windows Update endpoints.

Microsoft’s technical troubleshooting material also covers Store registration and endpoint access, but it is intended for support agents and IT professionals. For a home PC, follow Microsoft’s end-user steps first. Microsoft says completely uninstalling Store is unsupported, so do not use Store removal as a generic repair. If the code appears in Xbox, Windows Setup, or another installer

Do not apply the Windows Update driver-registry remedy just because the code matches. Record the product, installer, and exact failure stage, then use troubleshooting guidance for that product or the relevant Microsoft Store/Xbox path. Microsoft’s available documentation does not establish one Windows 11 Home cause or universal fix for 0x80070490 across these different installers.

What the error code does—and does not—tell you

  • Documented: Microsoft’s Windows Client reference labels 0x80070490 as ERROR_NOT_FOUND and describes a particular driver-installation failure involving missing driver-operation details.
  • Not established: The code alone does not prove registry corruption, component-store corruption, or a particular Store package problem.
  • Do not conflate it with other errors: Microsoft’s DISM and SFC guidance in the Windows Update reference addresses specific errors such as 0x800f081f and 0x800f0831; it does not establish those repairs as a fix for 0x80070490.
