The offers differ in data limits, eligibility rules and what happens to the trial number, so check those details before signing up.
Which carriers offer free phone trials?
As of October 5, 2026, AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon advertise free trials lasting 30 days or up to 30 days. Each adds a trial eSIM to an eligible phone, so you can try the network without first porting your existing number. Current offer terms are published by AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon; verify them before enrolling because terms and eligibility can change.

| Carrier | Trial service | Main eligibility conditions | Number and expiration |
|---|---|---|---|
| AT&T | 30 days; 100GB of data and 25GB of hotspot data. Includes unlimited talk and text in and between the U.S., Canada and Mexico, plus international texting from the U.S. to more than 200 countries and territories. | Compatible iPhone or Android with eSIM. Start in the AT&T app; check the signup flow for supported-device and account requirements. | Current service and number stay active; AT&T assigns a temporary number. No credit card is required. The temporary number expires after 30 days, and the trial eSIM can be removed. |
| T-Mobile Trial (formerly Network Pass) | Up to 30 days of unlimited high-speed data; T-Mobile says speeds do not slow based on usage amount. The offer also describes T-Satellite access on optimized phones and some member benefits. | Unlocked, eligible phone with available eSIM; user must be in the U.S. or Puerto Rico and not a T-Mobile customer. One trial per user; no trial participation in the previous 12 months, and no T-Mobile, Metro by T-Mobile or partner-network service in the previous 90 days. No credit card or credit check. | Current carrier and number remain active, with T-Mobile as a secondary eSIM and a temporary T-Mobile number available. Existing calls and texts continue on the current carrier while data uses T-Mobile. Trial ends automatically after 30 days. |
| Verizon Free Trial | Up to 30 days of unlimited talk and text and up to 100GB of 4G/5G Premium data. After 100GB, speeds may be up to 600 kbps during congestion. Domestic calling only; international services and add-ons are excluded. Streaming is listed as 480p on 4G/5G and 4K on 5G Ultra Wideband. | Unlocked eSIM-compatible smartphone with an available eSIM, in the U.S. Current Verizon, Visible and TracFone customers are excluded, as are users who enrolled in a Verizon trial within the last 12 months. Eligibility is checked in the My Verizon app. | A temporary number is assigned while existing service remains active. Service ends automatically after the trial unless you sign up for a paid Verizon plan; the temporary number is not kept if you join Verizon. |
What to check before starting a trial
Confirm your phone is compatible and unlocked
These trials use eSIM, so your phone needs eSIM support and an available eSIM slot or profile. T-Mobile and Verizon explicitly require an unlocked phone. If your phone is locked, ask your current carrier whether it can be unlocked before you try to enroll. AT&T also activates its trial through eSIM; use its app and offer page to confirm your device qualifies.

Check carrier and trial history
Eligibility is not just about the phone. Recent service with the carrier or an earlier trial can disqualify you. T-Mobile specifies a 12-month wait after a previous Trial or Network Pass and excludes people who had T-Mobile, Metro by T-Mobile or partner-network service in the prior 90 days. Verizon excludes current Verizon, Visible and TracFone customers and anyone who used its trial within the prior 12 months. Check the carrier’s current terms and signup flow for the final determination.

- Unlocked, portable hot spot for 5G and 4G LTE around the world, certified with AT&T requires a 5G compatible SIM card. Ask your 5G wireless network provider for the best 5G data plan for your needs
Compare allowances on equal terms
The data figures are not directly interchangeable: AT&T lists 100GB plus a separate 25GB hotspot allowance; Verizon lists up to 100GB of Premium data and a possible congestion-related speed limit beyond that threshold; T-Mobile describes unlimited high-speed data during the trial. Calling geography and streaming terms also differ. These are carrier-published offer terms, not independent measurements of which network is faster or more reliable at your address.
How to test coverage before switching
- Install the trial eSIM. Follow the carrier’s app or signup instructions, and leave your existing line active. Each offer uses a temporary trial number rather than replacing your current number at signup.
- Check line settings. With two lines on the phone, confirm which one is selected for mobile data, calls and texts. T-Mobile says trial data uses its eSIM while existing calls and texts continue on the current carrier.
- Test the places you use your phone. Try the candidate network at home, work and on regular routes or trips, at the times you usually need service. A carrier’s published offer cannot predict coverage or performance at a specific location.
- Repeat your normal tasks. Check call clarity, texts, browsing, streaming, downloads and data speed. If hotspot matters, test it too. AT&T specifically recommends trying signal at home, work and while traveling, as well as calls, texts, streaming, downloads, browsing and hotspot.
- Decide before the trial ends. You can join the new carrier, keep your current service, or let the trial expire. If switching, follow the carrier’s separate number-porting instructions rather than assuming the temporary trial number is the number you will keep.
What happens to the trial number if you switch?
The temporary number is for the trial; your existing number stays with your current carrier during the test. AT&T says its temporary number expires after 30 days and explains that, when joining, you can bring your current number or get a new one in its post-trial instructions. Verizon says its temporary number is not retained if you join Verizon. T-Mobile’s offer describes a temporary number alongside your active current line. Confirm the porting process with the carrier before ending or changing your existing service.

Which trial should you choose?
- Choose based on local performance first: Test the network in the places you depend on, using the same tasks you use on your existing service. Offer allowances alone cannot identify the best coverage for you.
- Look at your data needs: T-Mobile describes unlimited high-speed trial data; AT&T lists 100GB and a distinct hotspot allowance; Verizon’s up-to-100GB Premium data has a stated congestion condition after the threshold.
- Check calling and extras: AT&T lists calling in and between the U.S., Canada and Mexico and international texting from the U.S. Verizon limits trial calling to domestic service and excludes international add-ons. T-Mobile mentions T-Satellite on optimized phones and some member benefits.
- Use the trial you qualify for: Device unlock, eSIM availability, location and recent carrier or trial history can determine whether signup is possible.
You may not need to buy anything to try a carrier: first check whether your current phone is an unlocked, eSIM-compatible smartphone. No particular phone model is required by the offer details above.
