AI exposure does not mean a job is destined to disappear. It means some tasks in that job overlap with tasks AI may be able to perform. Whether a worker is replaced, gets help with routine work, or takes on different responsibilities depends on how central those tasks are, how an employer incorporates AI, and what people are still needed to do.
What it means for a job to be exposed to AI
Occupations consist of different tasks. AI may be able to draft, classify, summarize, or analyze some of them without being able to perform the full job. Exposure measures this overlap; it is not a forecast of layoffs. Adoption, workplace design, demand for the work, and management choices all affect what happens next. The OECD notes that some older exposure measures predate recent generative AI advances, so their findings should not be treated as precise predictions of current outcomes. OECD, Employment Outlook 2023.

The International Labour Organization’s 2023 analysis concluded that “Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) is more likely to augment than destroy jobs by automating some tasks rather than taking over a role entirely.” That is a general finding about likely task effects, not a guarantee for any occupation or individual worker. ILO, 21 August 2023.

How AI can change employment
The OECD describes three effects that can interact. Exposure alone cannot tell us which will dominate in a particular workplace.

- Displacement: When AI automates tasks, employers may need fewer workers to complete them.
- Productivity and demand: If AI helps workers produce more or lowers costs, demand for the work may grow. Greater productivity can support employment, but it does not guarantee that every affected worker keeps the same role.
- New tasks: Workplaces may create or expand responsibilities that AI does not perform, including integrating systems into workflows, checking outputs, and handling work that still requires people.
These channels can occur together: a tool might reduce time spent on one task while increasing output expectations or shifting staff toward different work. The OECD says the net effect on labor demand is uncertain. OECD, Employment Outlook 2023.
Where task-level assistance may matter
The OECD identifies secretaries and administrative assistants, accountants and financial analysts, software developers, managers, and human resources professionals as examples of occupations with high AI exposure. That label does not establish that AI will benefit or replace these workers. It points to work where task-level effects are worth examining.

| Occupation example | Task-level question | What exposure does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Secretaries and administrative assistants | Which routine information-handling tasks could be assisted, and how much of the role consists of coordinating people, timing, and exceptions? | Whether an employer will keep the role, redistribute tasks, or reduce staffing. |
| Accountants and financial analysts | Which analysis or document tasks could be assisted, and where are interpretation, review, and responsibility still required? | Whether automated work will lead to more output, fewer roles, or different duties. |
| Software developers | Which coding or documentation tasks could be assisted, and how much work involves defining requirements, integrating systems, and checking results? | Whether productivity gains will change hiring or the amount of development work available. |
| Managers | Could AI assist with information review, and how much of the role depends on decisions, coordination, and accountability? | Whether AI changes managerial headcount or the scope of a particular job. |
| Human resources professionals | Which administrative tasks could be assisted, and where do judgment, communication, and handling individual circumstances remain important? | How an organization will allocate tasks or staffing. |
These are questions for evaluating a role, not claims that any listed task is already automated in a particular workplace. The outcome depends in part on how central an affected task is to the job, how AI is built into work processes, and whether management retains people to perform or oversee the remaining work. The ILO discusses these mechanisms on its artificial intelligence topic page.

An OECD policy brief published in November 2024 found that about one-third of vacancies across 10 OECD countries were in occupations classed as highly exposed to AI. The country range was 31% in Austria to 45% in the United Kingdom. “Highly exposed” used an occupational exposure measure at least one standard deviation above the mean. These figures describe vacancies in exposed occupations, not the share of jobs expected to vanish. OECD, November 2024 policy brief.

In its 2024 survey summary, the OECD reported that four in five workers said AI improved their performance at work and three in five said it increased their enjoyment of work. Those are workers’ reported views, not proof that AI caused the outcomes or that all workers will experience them. OECD, Using AI in the workplace.

AI may change what an occupation asks of workers even when it does not eliminate the role. OECD research by Andrew Green analyzed online job vacancies across 10 OECD countries over the past decade. It found an 8 percentage-point increase in the share of vacancies in highly exposed occupations that demanded at least one emotional, cognitive, or digital skill. A panel of establishments, however, showed evidence that demand for these skills was beginning to fall. The mixed findings describe different measures and do not establish a universal trend or an individual worker’s outcome. OECD, 10 April 2024.

The same analysis found management and business skills among the skills most demanded in highly AI-exposed occupations. That is an evolving pattern in vacancy data, not a checklist that guarantees job security. Workers and employers may need to adapt as tasks and expectations shift.
Job quality is another part of the picture. The ILO warns that generative AI can affect work intensity and autonomy. A tool can help with a task while also changing how quickly work is expected, how closely it is monitored, or how much control a worker has over the process. Whether AI is beneficial therefore depends not only on whether a role remains, but also on how its work is redesigned. ILO, Artificial intelligence.
How to assess an AI change in your own role
- Break the role into tasks. Identify the work AI might assist with, the work it might automate, and the responsibilities that still require human judgment, interaction, physical work, or accountability.
- Check how central each task is. Automating a small, occasional task may affect a job differently from automating a core part of the daily workload.
- Look at the workflow, not just the tool. Find out who checks AI output, handles exceptions, and is responsible for errors—and whether the system changes the amount or pace of work.
- Ask how the employer will use the gains. Higher output could mean more demand, changed duties, fewer staff, or some combination. Exposure statistics cannot answer that question for a specific workplace.
- Track changes in required skills and discretion. Note whether the role increasingly calls for oversight, coordination, business judgment, or other skills, and whether workers retain meaningful control over their work.
The strongest evidence-based conclusion is about tasks, not job titles: AI can assist with or automate parts of work, while employment and job quality depend on adoption, demand, workflow design, and employer decisions. No occupation can be labeled safe from the exposure evidence alone.
