Yes. A TV aerial can deteriorate or be damaged, but a broken-up picture or missing channels does not by itself prove the aerial has failed. The fault may be in the cable, connectors, fixings, amplifier, TV or set-top box—or may be caused by interference or changing reception conditions. Start with safe checks indoors; if the problem persists or the fault may be on the roof, ask an installer to inspect the system and measure the signal.
How can a TV aerial or its system fail?
The aerial is only one part of the path carrying a broadcast signal to your television. A fault anywhere along that path can cause similar symptoms, so diagnosis matters before replacing equipment.

- Corrosion and age: Exposure to the elements can corrode an aerial and affect performance over time, particularly in coastal areas. Ofcom says an aerial more than ten years old may need replacement; it notes that coastal corrosion may shorten that period, not that every aerial has a fixed service life. Ofcom’s wideband aerial guidance.
- Water ingress: Water entering an aerial, downlead, amplifier or connection can disrupt reception. Sony advises that reception which worsens in heavy rain and stays poor after the rain has passed may indicate water has entered the aerial or cable. It is a clue, not a definitive diagnosis. Sony’s reception guidance.
- Wind, movement or damaged fixings: Ofcom lists wind damage and loose or corroded fixings among possible causes. Trouble coinciding with windy weather could point to movement, but timing alone cannot establish the cause.
- Cable or connector faults: A damaged, loose or weather-exposed cable or connection may prevent the signal reaching the TV reliably. Freeview says a damaged aerial cable can no longer carry the signal effectively and should be replaced. Freeview’s guidance on existing cables.
- Other equipment or interference: A splitter, amplifier, TV, set-top box or local interference can produce symptoms that resemble an aerial fault. Some amplifiers installed before digital switchover may no longer be needed; adding a booster without finding the cause is not a reliable first step. See Freeview’s interference guidance and Sony’s troubleshooting advice.
What do the symptoms suggest?
Picture break-up, missing channels or a sudden no-signal message can each have several causes. Use the pattern to decide what to check next, not to declare the aerial faulty.
| What you notice | What it may point to | Useful next check |
|---|---|---|
| Only one TV is affected | That set, its lead or its particular connection is one possibility; it does not rule out a wider reception issue. | Check its connections and, if practical, test a known-good lead or another TV. |
| Several TVs lose reception | A shared aerial, distribution equipment or local reception issue may be involved. | Check whether the sets share equipment and whether other households are affected. |
| Reception worsens during heavy rain and remains poor afterwards | Water ingress into the aerial or cable is one possibility. | Arrange an inspection if the problem persists; do not access roof equipment yourself. |
| Reception problems occur around windy weather | Movement or damage to the aerial or its fixings is possible, but the timing does not prove it. | From the ground, look for an obvious change and ask an installer to inspect if needed. |
| Only some channels are affected, or the problem is intermittent | Reception conditions, interference or a system component may be contributing. | Note which channels and times are affected and check the TV’s signal information if available. |
Ofcom’s 2014 consumer aerial survey found the cable loose in 6% of surveyed households with an outdoor aerial in use and secure in 94%; households where aerial type was uncertain were excluded. Those figures describe that survey sample, not current UK prevalence. Ofcom’s 2014 survey.

What can you check safely before calling an installer?
- See how widespread the fault is. Check other TVs in the home and, if practical, ask whether nearby households have the same issue. A wider problem may involve local reception, while a single affected set narrows the possibilities without proving the TV is at fault. Merton Council’s reception guidance.
- Check indoor connections. Make sure the aerial lead is firmly connected at the television or box and at the wall socket. If reception disappeared suddenly, restart the TV or box.
- Isolate the lead and connected equipment. If available, try a known-good cable of the same type. For diagnosis, connect the aerial lead directly to the TV, bypassing a splitter or other equipment where practical. Sony recommends these checks.
- Record the pattern and signal information. If your TV provides signal information, note it alongside the affected channels, times and weather. Signal strength alone does not establish which component has failed; an installer can measure the system to help locate a persistent fault.
- Look only from the ground. You may notice an obviously displaced aerial or damaged cable from a safe place. Do not climb a ladder, chimney or roof to inspect or adjust it. For suspected roof-level damage or water ingress, have an installer inspect and measure the system. Ofcom describes inspection and measurement as an appropriate diagnostic route. Ofcom’s correspondence on TV reception and aerial systems.
When is replacement sensible?
Replacement may be appropriate when an inspection finds corrosion, physical damage or a fault that cannot be resolved by repairing the cable or another component. Age can be a reason to check an aerial, but is not proof that it has failed: Ofcom’s 2015 advice says an aerial over ten years old may need replacing, with a potentially shorter lifespan in coastal conditions. Ofcom’s guidance.
For most consumers replacing an aerial because of unreliable reception, Ofcom recommends choosing a wideband aerial. That is a category recommendation, not a guarantee that a new aerial will fix every reception problem. Suitability depends on local reception and the condition of the existing installation.

When comparing a replacement or an installer’s proposal, ask what the diagnosis found and whether the work addresses the actual fault. Relevant factors include local transmitter needs, aerial type or band, exposure and condition, cable and connector condition, mounting and alignment, and whether the work includes signal measurement and system checks. There is no universal repair-versus-replacement threshold or fixed cost established by these sources.

Contact an aerial installer if reception remains unreliable after checking indoor connections, if several TVs are affected and the cause is unclear, or if you suspect water ingress, a loose aerial or roof-level cable damage. An installer can inspect the aerial and signal path and measure reception rather than relying on symptoms alone. Avoid climbing to inspect or realign the aerial yourself.
