On Android, the Gemini automations most worth setting up are recurring digests, quick phone controls, and task capture. More advanced project workflows and actions inside other apps can help too, but they have narrower access requirements and need more supervision. These features are not one universal automation system: each has its own trigger, permissions, account eligibility, and risks.
Choose the right kind of Gemini automation
Before setting anything up, decide what you want Gemini to do. A command such as setting a timer is different from a recurring answer, a task added to a connected app, or a workflow that watches for new email. The distinction matters because access and availability vary by feature.

| Feature | What it automates | Trigger | Main access requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Device assistance | Supported phone controls, such as alarms, timers, media, and opening apps | On demand | Some actions need permissions or the Google app set as the default digital assistant |
| Scheduled actions | A recurring response, such as a digest or summary | Time-based | Keep Activity; connected apps must be connected when the request uses them |
| Tasks and reminders | Task capture and management in Google Tasks or Samsung Reminder | On demand, in conversation | Keep Activity and the relevant app connection; Google Tasks also requires Workspace to be connected |
| Gemini Spark | More involved scheduled workflows, including certain email or topic monitors | Schedule-based or a qualifying event | Eligible personal account, age, plan, and location; Keep Activity |
| Screen automation | Multi-step actions inside select apps, such as booking a ride or ordering groceries | Prompted action | Beta availability limited by device, account, age, country, language, app, and rollout |
Google’s documentation describes these capabilities separately. In particular, Spark workflows and scheduled actions in Gemini chats are not the same feature.

Set up a recurring digest with Scheduled actions
A morning briefing or weekly wrap-up is a practical use for a scheduled action: it gives Gemini time to prepare a response that you can read when it is ready. Google suggests summaries that combine information such as calendar, to-do list, and email, as well as regular news or topic summaries.

- In the Gemini app, ask for the response you want and specify both the time and frequency. For example: Every weekday at 7 AM, summarize my calendar and to-do list and tell me what to prioritize.
- If the request uses another app, connect that app when Gemini asks. The app must be connected for Gemini to use its information.
- Turn on Keep Activity if it is not already enabled; Google requires it for scheduled actions.
- Allow Gemini notifications if you want an alert when the response is ready. Scheduled actions send a mobile notification when a response is prepared.
- Review the action and its schedule, then adjust or remove it if your routine changes.
Google says an account can have up to 10 active scheduled actions at a time. The feature is gradually rolling out, so it may not be available to every account. Location-based actions continue using the location where they were created unless you update the location or create a new action.
Use scheduled actions for information that remains useful even if it is prepared before delivery. They are a poor fit for monitoring a fast-changing situation or anything that must be current at an exact moment.

Use Gemini for quick phone controls
For immediate tasks, ask Gemini to set or manage an alarm or timer, open an app, control media, or change a supported device setting. Google says Device assistance works in the Gemini Android app. Samsung and other manufacturers may use their own clock apps for alarms and timers, so the experience can differ by phone.

- Notification actions: Reading or replying to notifications requires notification access.
- Assistant-dependent controls: Certain phone controls require the Google app, which hosts Gemini, to be the phone’s default digital assistant app.
- App-specific behavior: A command may work differently depending on the device maker’s apps and settings.
If a command does not work, check the relevant permission and whether the Google app is the default assistant before assuming the feature is unavailable.

Capture tasks from a conversation or photo
When a conversation, note, or photo gives you something to do, ask Gemini to add it to Google Tasks or Samsung Reminder. Name the destination app in your prompt if Gemini does not choose the one you intend. You can also ask Gemini to show, update, complete, or delete supported tasks.
- Enable Keep Activity, which Google requires for these app connections.
- Connect Google Tasks or Samsung Reminder in Gemini. Google Tasks also requires Workspace to be connected; Samsung Reminder must be connected separately.
- Make the request explicit, such as: Add “send the signed form” to Google Tasks for Friday.
- Check the destination app to confirm the task and its details, especially when the due date or wording matters.
This setup is useful for getting an action out of a chat and into a list you already use. It does not make every task app available: the documented integrations here are Google Tasks and Samsung Reminder.

Try Gemini Spark only for workflows that need it
Gemini Spark is intended for more involved scheduled work, including time-based schedules and certain Gmail or topic monitors. Examples include a daily review of email, calendar, and Drive, or a task that runs when a qualifying email arrives. A conversational prompt shown by Google is: Every day at 7 AM, look through my emails, calendar, and Drive, and let me know what to prioritize for the day.
Spark has distinct eligibility requirements: Google currently requires a personal account, age 18 or older, a Google AI Pro or Ultra plan, and Keep Activity. It is unavailable in the European Economic Area, Nigeria, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. The Schedules page and manual schedule setup are web-only; creating a schedule conversationally in a task thread is supported on mobile.

Be cautious with schedules that could take an unintended action. Google notes that a scheduled task might run while you are offline, when you may not be able to stop it. Do not schedule sensitive actions or enter sign-in or payment information directly in a task thread.
Screen automation is limited, and needs supervision
Google describes screen automation as a beta feature that can perform multi-step actions in select apps, including helping book rides or order food and groceries. It is not a general capability for all Android phones or apps.
Google lists Pixel 10 models and select Samsung Galaxy S26 and foldable models among supported devices. Availability is limited to adults using personal accounts in the US or Korea, with Pixel 10 devices excluded in Korea. Device, language, app, account, country, and rollout restrictions also apply, so check current Gemini availability for your phone and region rather than assuming a listed example guarantees access.
Google’s Gemini Apps Help warns: “Gemini is still learning and can make mistakes, so avoid using screen automation for emergencies or tasks involving sensitive information.” Do not rely on it for urgent transactions. Google also says not to enter sign-in information or payment details directly into chat; if needed, take over and enter them in the app yourself.
Which setups are worth your time?
- Start with a digest if a daily or weekly summary would save you from checking several sources individually.
- Use Device assistance for quick, low-stakes controls you can verify immediately, such as opening an app or setting a timer.
- Connect a task app if you regularly turn conversations or photos into follow-up actions.
- Consider Spark only if you meet its plan and account requirements and have a workflow that benefits from schedules or monitors.
- Use screen automation selectively when your device, account, region, and app are eligible, and stay ready to review or take over.
Most of these setups do not require buying a new phone. A compatible handset is relevant only if you specifically want to use the screen-automation beta and your current device is not supported.
