The best tablet to give someone in 2026 depends less on the spec sheet than on the phone and computer the recipient already uses and what they will mostly do with it. For most people, an Apple iPad (A16) is the safest general-purpose gift. An Android user who wants to write or sketch is better served by the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE, and a buyer on a tight budget who mainly reads, streams and browses should look at the Amazon Fire HD 10. The picks below come from recent buying guides from NBC Select and Tom’s Guide, with the details and caveats those guides report.
Start with the recipient’s ecosystem
Before comparing hardware, check which phone and computer the recipient uses. NBC Select advises weighing the devices a person already owns, because familiar software and syncing across phone, laptop and tablet make a new device easier to live with. An iPad fits most naturally into an iPhone and Mac household, while a Galaxy tablet fits a Galaxy phone owner. The Fire HD 10 runs Amazon’s Fire OS, which has a smaller app library than Android or iPadOS, so confirm that the recipient’s apps are available before buying.

The picks at a glance
| Tablet | Best suited to | Distinguishing points | Trade-offs to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple iPad (A16) | General use, especially for someone already in Apple’s ecosystem | NBC Select names it its best overall pick; Tom’s Guide lists the A16 chip and 128GB base storage | Not the cheapest option. Tom’s Guide says its display is less vivid than OLED competitors and that some Apple Pencil support is missing |
| Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE | Android users who write, sketch or mark up documents | S Pen included; microSD expansion up to 2TB; IP68 rating, according to NBC Select | Only worth it if the recipient is comfortable on Android |
| Amazon Fire HD 10 | Budget-minded readers and streaming viewers | Full-size screen at a lower price tier; Alexa support; microSD expansion up to 1TB, according to NBC Select | Fire OS app availability is narrower than on iPadOS or Android |
| Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE Plus | Large-screen Android users who want pen input | 13.1-inch LCD; S Pen included; microSD support; seven years of updates, according to Tom’s Guide | Larger and heavier; Tom’s Guide describes its chipset as low-powered for demanding tasks |
| reMarkable Paper Pro | Readers, writers and note-takers who want a paper-like writing surface | E-paper style display with a stylus workflow; Tom’s Guide’s pick for note-taking | Not a general entertainment device or laptop replacement; refresh is slower than a conventional screen |
Choosing by recipient
The general-purpose gift: Apple iPad (A16)
The iPad (A16) is the choice when you do not know much about the recipient’s habits. It handles video, reading, web browsing, video calls and light productivity without fuss, and it fits naturally into an existing Apple setup. Its drawbacks are real. It costs more than the Android and Amazon options, and Tom’s Guide found its display less vivid than OLED tablets. Tom’s Guide also named a base iPad, labelled iPad (2025), as its budget pick. Check that the listing you buy is the A16 model and not an earlier or differently configured iPad, since generations and storage tiers differ in price and performance.

The Android note-taker: Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE
The Tab S10 FE is the strongest Android choice where handwriting matters. NBC Select reports that the S Pen is included, which removes one of the most common surprise costs for pen users. The model also supports microSD expansion, so a recipient who stores a lot of files or media can add room later. Confirm the exact model name and current price with the retailer, since the price NBC Select showed is a snapshot.

The budget reader and streamer: Amazon Fire HD 10
The Fire HD 10 is the lowest-cost pick of the group and suits reading, video, music and browsing. NBC Select calls it a budget-friendly full-size option and notes microSD expansion up to 1TB. Its limits come from the software rather than the hardware: if the recipient relies on specific Android or iPhone apps, the Fire OS library may not cover them. It is best for someone who will mostly stay inside Amazon’s content and services.
The large-screen Android pick: Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE Plus
The FE Plus is a separate, larger device rather than a bigger version of the FE. Tom’s Guide reports a 13.1-inch LCD, an included S Pen, microSD support and seven years of software updates, which is a long support horizon for a gift. Its chipset is described as low-powered for demanding tasks, so it is a better fit for media, notes and web work than for heavy gaming. In a battery test, Tom’s Guide recorded 15 hours and 43 minutes for this model. That is one lab-style test of one device, not a general expectation for tablets, and real battery life depends heavily on brightness and how the tablet is used.

- PORTABLE MEDIA CENTER - Enjoy vibrant visuals, immersive sound, and endless entertainment anywhere you go. The HD display has 480 nits of brightness for realistic graphics and dual Dolby Atmos speakers that provide impressive sound depth.
- ELEVATED EFFICIENCY - Experience the MediaTek Helio G85 processor and 60Hz refresh rate that ensure fluid browsing, responsive gaming, and lag-free streaming.
The handwriting-first gift: reMarkable Paper Pro
If the recipient mainly writes, reads documents or takes notes, the reMarkable Paper Pro is a different kind of device. Tom’s Guide treats it as closer to a digital notebook than a tablet, and its e-paper style display is the reason. It is a poor choice for watching video or running ordinary apps, and its slower refresh rate makes it unsuitable for fast scrolling. Buy it only when the recipient has told you they want a notebook replacement.
Prices and what they really cost
Prices in buying guides are snapshots, not guarantees. In its September 24, 2026 guide, NBC Select showed a Fire HD 10 offer at $72.99 and a Galaxy Tab S10 FE offer at $419.99. Those were the prices visible when the guide was assessed, and they may have changed or been sold by a different retailer since. Check the live price, the seller, the exact generation and storage size, and the return policy before buying.

The gift price also depends on what is not in the box. Confirm whether a pen or keyboard is included in the exact configuration you are buying, and make sure any accessory is compatible with that generation.
