Five ghost-hunting apps are worth considering for a Halloween night, but none of them detects ghosts. Each one is a bundle of phone sensor readouts, generated words, recording tools, or camera effects, and the developers of several say so in their own store descriptions. Pick the app whose features you want to play with, and treat every number and word it produces as a prop rather than a message.

Pricing and purchase terms were not consistent across the store pages I checked, so confirm them on the store page before you install. Store ratings and download counts change constantly and do not indicate how accurate an app is, so this article leaves them out.

1. GhostTube Paranormal Videos
GhostTube is the most feature-dense of the five. Its Google Play and Apple App Store descriptions list phone magnetometer readings, audio spectrum analysis, customizable word output, low-light video filters, and community features. It is the only app here that is available on both Android and iOS under the same name. Some features are unlocked through in-app purchases. The developer states that the tools respond to environmental changes, and also cautions that the output should not be treated as definitive communication or relied on for important decisions.

2. Ghost Hunting Tools: EVP Radar
This Android app pairs an EVP recorder with spirit-box style words, a word dictionary, graphs, and an EMF meter. Its Google Play listing calls it entertainment-only and says it is not a substitute for professional investigation equipment or services. It is a good pick if you mainly want to record audio at a party and see what the word generator does with it.
3. Ghost Finder
Ghost Finder, also for Android, offers REM, an M1 EMF meter that uses the phone’s magnetometers, a ghost box, a blackbox feature, an SLS camera, and a recorder. Its listing warns that some features may not work on older devices that lack advanced magnetometers. Check that warning against your phone model before you plan a session around the meter.
4. Ghost Detector Radar Prank
This Android app is the most candid about what it is. Its listing describes a magnetophone, radar, ghost finder, and camera, then explicitly calls the app a funny simulation. It says results cannot be scientifically verified and recommends using it for entertainment. If your goal is a prank on friends, this is the most straightforward choice, because its own description already frames it as a show.

5. Ghost Detector: Ectify
Ectify is the iOS option in this group. It reads the phone’s built-in magnetometer, produces spirit-box style words drawn from a curated word bank, and offers recording and sharing. Its App Store disclosure is the clearest statement in this group: “It has no scientific basis and does not actually detect ghosts, spirits, or any paranormal activity.” Its generated words are random, which means they are not a record of anything said in the room.
Optional iOS alternative: Ghost detector spirit hunter
If you want to stay within the US App Store and do not want Ectify, Ghost detector spirit hunter is a possible substitute. Its listing describes a live camera view, a radar-style display, and sensor or EMF-style readings, and it says it does not prove or verify paranormal activity.
Sensor readings versus supernatural claims
Most of these apps use the phone’s magnetometer, a chip that measures the strength and direction of the magnetic field around the device. That is a real measurement, and it changes when you move the phone near a power cord, a speaker, a fridge, a car, or a pair of wireless earbuds. A reading that jumps in an old house can be caused by wiring behind a wall just as easily as by anything else, which is why a sudden spike proves only that the field changed.

Calling that change a sign of a ghost is a separate, unsupported step. Nothing in the store descriptions of these five apps establishes that their readings correspond to spirits, and none of the sources reviewed here offers independent accuracy testing of the apps. A handheld EMF meter measures electromagnetic fields in the same basic way, and it is a useful way to see how much a room’s wiring and electronics affect a reading, but it does not prove paranormal activity either.

Spirit-box apps play rapidly changing audio or pick words from a list, and some of the apps here generate those words from a dictionary or a curated word bank. Ectify states plainly that its words are random. Random selection from a list produces words that sound meaningful when you want them to, which is the entertainment value and also the trap. Record a session, then play it back with the app’s word output turned off to hear how much of the “message” comes from your own expectation.
EVP, short for electronic voice phenomenon, refers to voices or sounds that people hear in recordings but that were not audible in the room. The recorder features in EVP Radar, Ghost Finder, and Ectify capture audio, and some, such as GhostTube, add audio spectrum analysis. Those tools show you the frequencies in a recording. They do not tell you who or what made a sound.

Before you install
- Check phone compatibility. Ghost Finder warns that some features may not work on older devices without advanced magnetometers. Look for similar notes on the listing you choose.
- Review permissions. Apps that record audio will need microphone access, and apps with camera overlays will need camera access. On Google Play, open the app’s page and check the “Data safety” section. On the App Store, check the “App Privacy” section.
- Confirm in-app purchase terms. GhostTube’s features are partly behind in-app purchases, and pricing across the other listings was not consistently stated. Check the price and any subscription terms on the store page on the day you install.
- Check the platform. EVP Radar, Ghost Finder, and Ghost Detector Radar Prank are Android apps. Ectify is iOS only. GhostTube is available on both.
- Check the update date. Store listings change, so compare the features you read about here with the current listing before relying on them.
Safe and sensible outings
Use these apps in places where you are permitted to be, such as your own home, a rental you have been invited into, or a public area that allows you to be there after dark. Keep a safe route and a companion with you, and avoid trespassing, disturbing a cemetery, or entering unsafe structures to chase a reading. Do not make decisions about a property, a relationship, or your own safety based on what an app displays or says. The most useful outcome from these apps is a good story about a weird spike on the graph and a few laughs with friends.
The GhostTube developer’s caution is a fair rule for all five: the output is a show, not a communication channel.
