If you like XCOM or Fire Emblem, there are good reasons to explore tactics games now: recent releases span compact combat puzzles, mercenary campaigns and story-rich tactical RPGs. That variety—not a provable all-time high—is what makes the genre inviting. The right starting point depends on whether you want to solve a tight battlefield problem, manage a squad over a campaign, or follow characters through a larger story.
What counts as a tactics game?
“Tactics game” is a broad label, not a promise of one particular structure. Some games make each encounter a compact puzzle; others build turn-based battles into a longer squad campaign or a role-playing story with character progression. A current r/StrategyRpg discussion titled “Looking for turn based tactical games like XCOM or Fire Emblem” reflects one familiar way players describe the search, but those two reference points do not define the whole genre.

When choosing a game, compare how encounters work, how much campaign management sits between them, how important the story and character growth are, and whether it is available on your platform. There is no consistent cross-game difficulty measure in these descriptions, so it is more useful to match the design to what you enjoy than to assume one option is objectively easier.

Recent releases show how wide the genre is
Warhounds: a mercenary squad in the field
Steam lists The First Studios’ Warhounds, published by Brightika, Inc., as released on 11 August 2026. Its store description presents an alternate-future African campaign and a mercenary squad, with combat built around lines of fire, flanking angles, breaking cover and taking high ground. Steam says planning matters more than random-number generation; that is the store’s characterization, not an independent assessment. See the Steam listing.
FINAL FANTASY TACTICS – The Ivalice Chronicles: jobs, terrain and political conflict
Steam lists Square Enix’s FINAL FANTASY TACTICS – The Ivalice Chronicles as released on 30 September 2025. Its description highlights voiced dialogue, enhanced graphics and gameplay improvements, alongside battles across 3D terrain where positioning and turn order matter. The job-and-ability system adds a character-building layer to the tactical encounters. GameSpot describes the story as following Ramza Beoulve through political conflict and lists PC, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PS5, PS4 and Xbox Series X/S platforms. Pick by the decisions you want to make
Do you want to solve the battle or manage the campaign?
For a tightly bounded problem, Into the Breach’s visible enemy intentions give you a basis for planning each move. Tactical Breach Wizards is likewise described in terms of puzzle-like encounter solutions. If you want the choices to continue between fights, Jagged Alliance 3 adds the practical burden of paying and training mercenaries and keeping them alive, as well as tactical combat.

Do you want a firefight, stealth, or a character-led story?
Warhounds and Jagged Alliance 3 are options for mercenary-squad combat. Invisible, Inc. changes the problem to stealth and hacking against a countdown. For a stronger story and character-progression emphasis, The Ivalice Chronicles offers jobs and abilities within a political narrative, while Fire Emblem: Three Houses is described as a story-driven tactical RPG.
