The Witcher 4 has no published map-area figure. The best public comparison is game director Sebastian Kalemba’s December 2024 statement that its map size and quest count would be “more or less” similar to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. That is a broad expectation, not a measured size or final guarantee. The 2025 technology demo shows Ciri traveling through Kovir, but it is explicitly not gameplay, so it does not confirm the finished game’s map boundaries or travel systems.
How big is The Witcher 4’s map?
In a December 2024 interview reported by TechRadar, game director Sebastian Kalemba said the map size and quest count would be “more or less” the same as The Witcher 3. He did not give a precise percentage, and the report notes he could not say whether the new game would be 90%, 85%, or 100% of its predecessor’s size.

So the accurate answer is a qualitative comparison: developers have described a broadly similar scale, not confirmed a larger map. No official area in square miles or square kilometers has been published in the cited material. The statement is an expectation made while the game is in development, not a surveyed measurement or guarantee of final content.
Will The Witcher 4’s map be bigger than The Witcher 3?
There is no confirmed claim that it will be bigger. Kalemba’s “more or less” comparison points to a similar overall scale, while leaving room for differences. He also emphasized creating a compelling experience and prioritizing quality over quantity rather than targeting a precise map-size or quest-count number.

New regions can appear without the whole map being larger: the director’s comparison concerns overall scale, while Kovir is a newly shown setting. The two points are compatible, but neither establishes the final size or complete contents of the world.
What regions and environments have been shown?
Kovir and Valdrest
CD PROJEKT RED’s June 3, 2025 technology-demo announcement identifies Kovir as a region making its first appearance in the video-game series. The demo follows Ciri and her horse, Kelpie, across rugged mountains and dense forests toward Valdrest, a trading port town. On PlayStation Blog, Kalemba describes Kovir as “a rugged land where cities are built on trade and keep a careful distance from the military conflicts that plague the rest of the north.”
What the demonstration can—and cannot—tell you
The showcase illustrates technology and an early view of world building, including systems for detailed foliage and loading geometry. Kalemba explicitly said it “isn’t gameplay of The Witcher 4.” Treat the scenery and route as evidence of the setting and visual direction being explored, not proof that every location shown will be playable in the final game.
Rank #2
- If you buy this game, you will receive a free next-gen update on December 14th!
- Play as a highly trained monster slayer for hire.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth and complexity.
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year edition brings together the base game and all the additional content released to date.
The demo does not establish Kovir’s playable boundaries, the complete region list, final NPC density, or the game’s exploration loop. CD PROJEKT RED’s April 3, 2025 worldbuilding podcast describes the care involved in making environments feel grounded: Environment Art Director Michał Janiszewski said that even “the line of the trees needs to be specifically created.” That supports the importance of environmental detail, but it is not a map-size or gameplay specification.

No final fast-travel system, travel-time estimate, or traversal mechanics have been confirmed in the cited sources. Seeing Ciri ride Kelpie in a non-gameplay demo does not establish the horse’s final controls, how broadly mounts are used, or whether fast travel will be available. Those details remain undisclosed.
What is confirmed—and what is still unknown?
| Question | What is currently known |
|---|---|
| Overall map scale | Kalemba said in 2024 that map size would be “more or less” similar to The Witcher 3; no official area figure or exact percentage is stated. TechRadar, December 19, 2024. |
| Quest count | Described by Kalemba as “more or less” similar to The Witcher 3, without a final count. TechRadar, December 19, 2024. |
| New setting shown | Kovir, with a route through mountains and forests toward Valdrest, appears in the 2025 technology demo; the demonstration is not gameplay. CD PROJEKT RED, June 3, 2025; PlayStation Blog, June 3, 2025. |
| Full map and travel systems | Final region list, playable boundaries, fast travel, and travel-time estimates are not stated in the cited sources. |
For context, CD PROJEKT RED describes The Witcher 4 as a single-player, open-world RPG starring Ciri in its December 13, 2024 announcement. That high-level description does not add a map-area measurement or resolve the unknown travel details.
