The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered is a broad free upgrade for existing owners, not a remake. CD PROJEKT RED’s September 2026 change list covers visuals, combat behavior, controls, interface, accessibility and platform features, while retaining the original game rather than replacing its story. Owners should check their platform library before buying another copy: eligible past purchasers can upgrade at no charge within the same platform ecosystem.
What The Witcher 3 Remastered is—and is not
CD PROJEKT RED released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered on September 29, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. The publisher describes a substantial upgrade to the existing RPG, not a rebuilt game or a replacement story. The underlying adventure remains the point; the work is concentrated on presentation, usability and platform-specific features. CD PROJEKT RED’s release announcement and official change list provide the release and feature details.

This is distinct from the December 2022 Complete Edition announcement, which covered the earlier next-gen release and its features. Those older mode descriptions should not be treated as the 2026 Remastered platform specifications. The 2022 announcement is useful as historical context, not as a current feature guide.

Rendering, lighting and visual effects
The publisher lists native DirectX 12 rendering with multithreading, an improved shading model, updated textures and models based on assets from The Witcher 3 HD Reworked Project, and revised terrain and material rendering. Other listed changes include improved grass and foliage lighting, new image-based lighting, reworked bloom, updated tone mapping, Ground Truth Ambient Occlusion, ray-traced local shadows, updated screen-space reflections and shadows, HDR calibration changes, and improvements to motion blur and subsurface scattering. Sign and skill effects have also been revised.
#1 Best Overall
- Trained from early childhood and mutated to gain superhuman skills, strength, and reflexes, witchers are a counterbalance to the monster-infested world in which they live.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth, and complexity.
- Take on the most important contract of your life: to track down the child of prophecy, the key to saving or destroying this world.
These are descriptions of changes, not independent benchmark results. The notes do not establish a universal frame-rate increase or quantify image-quality gains across systems, settings or platforms.
Combat, skills and movement
The skill tree has been reorganized around prerequisites, with three ranks per skill. Skill values and synergies were rebalanced, some skills were renamed, and skill points were reset as a consequence of the changes; plan to review your build rather than assuming your old allocation will remain intact. The publisher also says it polished the behavior of many non-boss monsters, refined movement and animation, and added finishers and idle animations. A horse-control sensitivity slider gives players another way to adjust Roach’s handling.
Camera behavior has two notable options: a wider-field-of-view exploration camera and a dynamic combat camera. They change how play is framed, rather than adding a new story or replacing the existing combat system.
Interface and everyday play
The quality-of-life changes target navigation and repeated interactions. The map makes quest tracking easier and adds more markers; minimap options are cleaner; quest notifications are combined; nearby loot is grouped; and a loot feed and item tooltips are included. Meditation now uses a time-lapse, tutorials are streamlined, and loot can be collected without dismounting Roach.
Photo Mode and accessibility
Photo Mode is expanded with character placement, poses and expressions, camera locking and saved camera presets, environment presets, aspect-ratio controls, a first-person camera, camera-collision controls, weather and time controls, composition guides, NPC hiding and placeable props.
A new accessibility settings section includes the Bard’s Ballad preset, which CD PROJEKT RED designed to simplify selected mechanics and reduce cognitive load. Individual options include vitality regeneration, infinite breath, item and boat durability, item weight, boat speed and Witcher Sense toggling. The preset and toggles let players adjust selected demands; the notes do not describe them as a separate difficulty mode.
Mods
The upgrade adds in-game cross-platform mod support through mod.io and improvements for REDkit. According to the official instructions, browsing and installing mods requires a CD PROJEKT RED account connected to mod.io.
Platform features are not identical
The Remastered feature list varies by platform. In particular, the PC rendering options and the console feature descriptions should not be read as interchangeable promises. The following are publisher-listed features; they are not independent confirmation of achieved performance in every configuration.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.PC requirements and performance expectations
Before changing hardware, compare your system with CD PROJEKT RED’s current PC requirements. The publisher says its expected FPS targets are based on its QA tests, that occasional fluctuations may occur, and that results vary with system configuration, graphics settings and output resolution. An SSD is required for the game’s technical enhancements.
Windows 10 may still run the game, but the publisher says it no longer develops or tests on that operating system and cannot guarantee compatibility or performance. Treat that as a compatibility caveat, not a blanket claim that the game cannot run on Windows 10. The requirements page was updated one week before October 7, 2026, according to CD PROJEKT RED Support.
Who gets the free upgrade—and what it includes
CD PROJEKT RED says anyone who purchased a version in the past can upgrade for free within the same platform ecosystem. The Remastered upgrade also includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine for owners of the game on the listed platforms. Check the account library and platform where you own the game before purchasing another copy; the free-upgrade statement is tied to the same platform ecosystem, not a transfer between ecosystems. The release announcement lists PC (Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store and Battle.net), PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2. See the publisher’s release details.
Launch-week fixes documented on October 1, 2026
CD PROJEKT RED posted Patch 5.00b and PC Hotfix 5.00c on October 1, 2026. That dated status is useful context, but it does not establish that every reported issue was resolved then—or that any issue remains today.
- Patch 5.00b: listed a fix for DLSS availability in the Xbox Play Anywhere PC version, plus lighting and parity adjustments. Patch notes.
- PC Hotfix 5.00c: listed fixes for saving and loading when the Documents path contained special characters, voice volume, a HairWorks-related performance and visual issue, telemetry settings, GOG achievements and launching the Classic 1.32 version, alongside visual adjustments in Velen. The publisher said it was continuing to investigate reported issues. Hotfix notes.
Is the Remastered upgrade worth using?
For someone who already owns the game on the same platform ecosystem, the practical decision is straightforward: check the library for the free upgrade before paying again. For someone choosing whether to play, the key distinction is expectation. The Remastered edition is aimed at players who want the existing RPG with an extensive visual, interface and usability pass, plus features that differ by platform. It is not presented as a new main story or a remake.
On PC, decide based on your hardware and desired rendering features, then consult the current requirements rather than assuming ray tracing or Path Tracing will suit every system. On consoles, compare the listed features for your exact device: PS5 Pro and Switch 2 have capabilities not stated for every platform. No independent benchmark or named, dated reception statistic is established in the publisher materials cited here, so performance and reception should not be inferred from the feature list alone.
