Choose The Witcher 3 if you want dark fantasy, a defined hero, and a monster-slayer’s search for his adopted daughter. Choose Cyberpunk 2077 if you prefer a first-person science-fiction world and a customizable mercenary who can fight, sneak, hack, or use cybernetic abilities. The choice is mainly about setting, perspective, and role-playing style—not an objective winner.
There is also an edition update to know before buying: CD PROJEKT RED says The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered launched on September 29, 2026, replacing the Complete Edition on supported platforms. It includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. Check your platform’s upgrade and store listing rather than assuming an older Complete Edition listing is current.

Choose The Witcher 3 if you want fantasy and a fixed hero
Geralt’s identity and profession are established: he is a witcher, a monster hunter navigating a war-torn fantasy world. The central pull is his search for Ciri, with monster contracts and the wider saga providing the setting around that personal quest. Pick it if you want a defined protagonist rather than building a character from scratch.
The current release is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered. CD PROJEKT RED describes it as a free upgrade for owners on qualifying platforms; on supported platforms it replaces the Complete Edition. It includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, alongside visual and performance updates, improved combat, a reworked skill system, and cross-platform mod support. See the publisher’s Remastered announcement and official Witcher site for platform-specific details.

The publisher also announced a third expansion, Songs of the Past, for 2027. That is an announced schedule, not a guarantee, and it is not one of the two expansions included with Remastered.
Choose Cyberpunk 2077 if you want a customizable sci-fi role
Cyberpunk 2077 puts V, a hired gun, in Night City, a dangerous metropolis shaped by corporate power. The story begins with V trying to survive after an experimental prototype is implanted in their head. Its first-person presentation and customizable protagonist suit players who want to shape a mercenary’s appearance and background.
Combat and infiltration can involve weapons, hacking, implants, stealth, or direct confrontation. The official Cyberpunk 2077 site describes Phantom Liberty as a spy-thriller adventure set in Dogtown; the expansion requires the base game.

Which game has the better story?
There is no neutral, settled verdict in the available evidence. The stories offer different pleasures: Geralt’s search for Ciri is part of a dark-fantasy saga with a fixed lead, while V’s crisis unfolds in a science-fiction city and supports a more customizable role. A 2026 GamesRadar comparison favors Cyberpunk for player-shaped role-playing and praises The Witcher 3 for writing and quest design; that is one critic’s interpretation, not a universal ranking or a hands-on comparison here.
Which edition should you buy?
If you want The Witcher 3
Look for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered on a supported platform. If you already own the game, check whether your platform qualifies for the free upgrade before buying again. Upgrade arrangements differ across platforms, particularly on older-generation consoles, so verify the exact store and platform listing.
If you want Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition includes the base game, Phantom Liberty, and the free updates identified by the publisher. CD PROJEKT RED announced worldwide digital availability and physical availability in selected markets for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. For a disc purchase, confirm the live listing’s platform, region, and expansion contents. See the publisher’s Ultimate Edition page.
Rank #3
Prices, stock, and regional availability can change, so an edition cannot be called cheaper without checking a current local store listing.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to make the choice
- Pick The Witcher 3 for dark fantasy, monster contracts, and Geralt’s established story.
- Pick Cyberpunk 2077 for a first-person science-fiction setting and a mercenary role with varied combat and stealth approaches.
- If you already own The Witcher 3, check Remastered eligibility before purchasing another edition.
- If you want Phantom Liberty, choose an edition that includes both it and the base game, or verify that the expansion is sold separately for your platform.
What the numbers do—and don’t—say
CD PROJEKT RED reported in 2026 that The Witcher 3 had received more than 250 Game of the Year awards and sold more than 65 million copies worldwide. These are publisher-reported figures, not a measure of which game a particular player will enjoy more. The sources do not establish a comparable completion-time figure for the two games, so playtime is not a sound basis for choosing between them.
