DevOps Career FAQ: Entry-Level Paths, Certifications, and Salary Expectations

There is no single required route into DevOps. Build practical delivery and operations skills, use certifications selectively, and avoid treating adjacent BLS wages as DevOps starting pay.

You can work toward a DevOps role through software development, IT operations, systems administration, networking, QA, or support; the evidence does not establish one required degree, certificate, or career path. Start by building practical skills in operating systems, networking, scripting, source control, cloud, deployment, monitoring, and automation. Treat certifications as structured learning and proof of provider-specific skills—not as a promise of employment. There is no reliable DevOps-specific entry-level salary figure in the sources here, so software and QA wage statistics should not be mistaken for DevOps pay.

What does DevOps work involve?

DevOps brings software delivery and operations concerns together. Work can include helping teams release software, automating infrastructure and deployment, monitoring systems, troubleshooting incidents, and improving reliability, performance, and cost. The balance varies by employer: a role focused on deployment support is different from one centered on platform engineering or site reliability.

Google Cloud describes its Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer credential as covering the software development lifecycle, CI/CD, reliability, observability, troubleshooting, and performance and cost optimization. Its page says, “A Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer implements processes and capabilities throughout the systems development lifecycle using Google-recommended methodologies and tools.” That describes Google’s credential, not a universal definition of every employer’s DevOps role. How do I get into DevOps with no experience?

There is no single evidenced entry route. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) describes typical education, related work experience, and on-the-job training by occupation; those categories do not establish that every worker must follow the same path, and alternate paths may exist. Software, IT operations, systems, networking, QA, and technical support can all provide relevant foundations. BLS explanation of education and training data

A practical approach is to build fundamentals in sequence, then demonstrate that you can apply them. This progression synthesizes tasks reflected in Google Cloud’s credential materials; it is a learning suggestion, not a required curriculum or a guarantee of a job.

  1. Operating systems and command line: Practice navigating files, managing processes, reading logs, and understanding permissions.
  2. Networking: Learn how IP addresses, DNS, ports, firewalls, and HTTP affect an application’s ability to communicate.
  3. Scripting and source control: Write small scripts to automate repetitive work and use version control to track and explain changes.
  4. Cloud fundamentals: Learn how compute, storage, identity, and networking fit together in a cloud environment.
  5. Deployment and automation: Practice packaging and deploying an application, then automate a repeatable part of the process.
  6. Monitoring and recovery: Add useful logs or monitoring, identify a failure, and document how you would diagnose and recover from it.

Make small projects that another person can inspect. A useful project explains what it does, how to deploy it, what can fail, and how to recover—not just which tools were used. As you gain experience, look for opportunities to take responsibility for systems used by others; production responsibility is distinct from completing a tutorial or passing an exam.

What is the best entry-level DevOps job?

There is no single best job title because employers use titles differently and the amount of production responsibility varies. Instead, compare openings by the work they actually describe. Adjacent roles in cloud support, systems or IT operations, deployment support, QA automation, and junior platform or reliability engineering may offer relevant experience, but none is a universal required stepping stone.

  • For a support or operations background: Look for roles that let you work with cloud infrastructure, monitoring, deployment, incident handling, or automation in addition to user support.
  • For a software or QA background: Seek openings involving build and release pipelines, test automation, deployment, observability, or operational ownership.
  • For a networking or systems background: Favor roles that connect infrastructure skills to scripting, cloud services, application delivery, and monitoring.

Read the responsibilities and prerequisites rather than relying on “junior” in the title. Note whether the job expects independent production on-call work, prior experience managing cloud systems, or only familiarity with the tools. Compare local postings to understand what employers in your area actually request.

Do I need a degree or certification for DevOps?

The available evidence does not establish that a degree or certification is universally required to enter DevOps. BLS education and training categories describe typical preparation for occupations, not an across-the-board rule for DevOps jobs. Employers set their own requirements, so check postings for the role and location you want.

A certificate is a credential; a learning path is a way to acquire skills; and a job role is the work an employer hires someone to do. They are related but not interchangeable. Google Cloud separates its certifications into foundational, associate, and professional levels. Its associate tier is described as validating fundamental skills for deploying and maintaining cloud projects; its Associate Cloud Engineer exam guide covers deploying and securing applications and infrastructure, monitoring operations, and maintaining solutions. Google Cloud certifications · Associate Cloud Engineer exam guide

Google positions its Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer credential at a more experienced level. It recommends three or more years of industry experience, including at least one year designing and managing production systems on Google Cloud. That is guidance for this specific Google Cloud credential, not a hiring requirement for all DevOps roles or certifications. The page lists a two-hour exam and a $200 registration fee plus applicable tax; exam details and fees can change, so confirm them on the official credential page before registering.

Google Cloud credential level What the source says it covers How to interpret it
Associate Cloud Engineer Fundamental skills for deploying and maintaining cloud projects; the exam guide covers deployment, security, monitoring, and maintenance. A provider-specific way to structure and demonstrate foundational cloud skills.
Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer CI/CD, SRE practices, observability, troubleshooting, and performance and cost work; Google recommends 3+ years in industry, including 1+ years designing and managing production systems on Google Cloud. An advanced provider-specific credential with a stated experience recommendation, not a universal entry requirement.

Choose a certification when its syllabus matches skills you need or when employers you are targeting ask for it. Build hands-on ability alongside exam study; credentials alone do not establish that you have operated a production system. The sources here do not establish equivalent current costs or experience requirements across Google Cloud, AWS, and Microsoft Azure, so they do not support ranking providers or assuming their credentials are interchangeable.

How much does an entry-level DevOps engineer make?

No DevOps-specific entry-level median salary is established by the cited sources. The BLS figures below are U.S. occupational medians for May 2025, across experience levels. They describe software developers and software quality assurance analysts and testers—not DevOps workers, not starting salaries, and not an estimate of DevOps compensation.

BLS occupation or comparison figure May 2025 median annual wage What it does—and does not—tell you
Software developers $135,980 Median for this occupation; not DevOps pay or an entry-level salary.
Software quality assurance analysts and testers $104,300 Median for this occupation; not DevOps pay or an entry-level salary.
All workers, as used in the BLS software-developer profile comparison $50,980 The comparison figure in that profile; not a DevOps wage or entry-level benchmark.

These figures come from the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook profile for software developers, quality assurance analysts, and testers. The profile notes that wages vary with experience, responsibility, performance, tenure, and geography, and points readers to state and area wage information. A separate BLS table of 2025 median wages by typical entry-level education category explicitly covers all jobs in each category, not just entry-level jobs; it cannot supply a DevOps starting salary. BLS Table 5.2: Employment, wages, and projected change by typical entry-level education

For a realistic local estimate, compare current postings for the specific work you are considering. Separate support and operations roles from platform or reliability engineering, and compare base salary with total compensation rather than treating them as the same figure. Geography and role scope matter; the occupational medians above cannot settle what a new hire in a particular city should expect.
