If The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered is stuttering, crashing, or running below your expected frame rate, first confirm you are on the September 2026 Remastered edition and install the latest patch for your platform and storefront. For PC, CD PROJEKT RED’s October 1, 2026 Hotfix 5.00c reverted a HairWorks change that caused significant performance and visual problems for some players. That does not establish a fix for every performance issue. Next, compare your PC with the developer’s target for your resolution and graphics mode, then lower one demanding setting at a time to narrow down the problem.
Confirm which Witcher 3 edition and patch you have
The September 29, 2026 Remastered edition is a different patch line from the December 2022 next-gen update, which began at version 4.0 and continued through 4.x patches. Advice about the older version may not describe the current edition. Remastered is available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. CD PROJEKT RED’s Remastered announcement describes it as a free upgrade for qualifying existing owners on supported storefronts and platforms, including Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine.

Before changing settings, note your platform, edition and version, PC storefront if applicable, CPU, GPU, RAM, storage drive, output resolution, graphics preset, and whether ray tracing, path tracing, HairWorks, upscaling, mods, or overlays are enabled. This makes it easier to tell whether a patch or a single setting change made a difference.
Install the latest patch before troubleshooting
PC: Hotfix 5.00c and HairWorks
CD PROJEKT RED’s Hotfix 5.00c, dated October 1, 2026, is listed for Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, and Xbox Play Anywhere on PC. It reverted a change that caused significant performance and visual problems with HairWorks enabled for some users. If you are on a build affected by that change, update first; if performance remains poor, try HairWorks off as a diagnostic and retest. The same hotfix addressed a save/load failure when the Documents-folder path contained special characters, among other issues. For Xbox Play Anywhere PC specifically, an October 1 report based on the developer’s announcement said Patch 5.00b addressed unavailable DLSS and adjusted lighting. Consoles: check the platform’s current update
Use the update history or support information for your console and the Remastered edition. Do not apply PC-only advice about graphics drivers, storefront file checks, or PC settings to a console. The 2022 version 4.0 console performance modes are historical context, not a specification for the 2026 edition.
Compare your PC with the target for your resolution and mode
CD PROJEKT RED’s PC requirements page lists these targets for Remastered. They are developer targets rather than a guarantee in every scene; the page says performance fluctuates with gameplay, system configuration, settings, and output resolution. Its RT and path-tracing targets use upscaling set to Auto, and path tracing also uses frame generation. See the official PC system requirements.

The developer’s table also says a GTX 1660 can achieve 60 FPS or higher at Minimum settings; that is not the same target as the table’s listed 30 FPS minimum configuration. CD PROJEKT RED warns that “Higher resolution will significantly affect FPS.” If your chosen resolution or ray-tracing mode exceeds the target your hardware matches, test a lower output resolution or less demanding mode before considering an upgrade.
Use controlled setting changes to isolate low FPS or stutter
- Record a repeatable starting point. Note the same location or activity, output resolution, preset, and current frame rate or hitching pattern. Avoid changing several settings at once.
- Compare the intended mode with a lower-load mode. Temporarily lower output resolution or switch off ray tracing or path tracing, then compare in the same situation. These are demanding options; the official targets are tied to specific resolutions and modes.
- Test one additional setting at a time. If you use HairWorks on PC, confirm the game is updated to the applicable hotfix, then test HairWorks off if problems persist. Retest after each change and record whether the symptom changes.
- Check storage. The current PC requirements specify an SSD. CD PROJEKT RED links it to faster loading, smoother asset streaming, and overall performance; that requirement does not prove an SSD will eliminate every brief frame-time hitch.
Separate sustained low frame rates from brief hitches: a consistently low frame rate and occasional pauses are different symptoms, and the information available here does not establish one universal cause for either. A change that helps one pattern may not resolve the other.

Record when the crash happens, your platform and exact game version, and any recent setting or mod changes. On PC, include the storefront and whether overlays are active when contacting support. The current official update notes cited here document specific fixes, but do not establish a complete diagnosis or a universal driver, overlay, mod, or file-validation fix for Remastered crashes. For historical context only, a December 2022 hotfix for the older next-gen version was described as improving stability and performance and fixing GOG and Steam overlay issues. That does not establish an overlay fix for the 2026 Remastered edition. The 2022 hotfix announcement.

CD PROJEKT RED says it no longer officially supports or tests Windows 10. It does not say the game will definitely stop running on Windows 10; it says it cannot guarantee compatibility or performance.
